Sarawak allocates RM600 million for free education in 2025
State Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee confirmed the initiative will cover 64 courses across four state-owned universities.
'Although Sarawak premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg never promised free tertiary education in any election, it will still be done out of care and in the educational interests of the Sarawak youth,' he said.
The announcement was made during the central zone Sarawak Women's, Children and Community Welfare Development Ministry outreach programme in Sibu.
The four universities included in the scheme are Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS), Universiti Curtin Malaysia, Sarawak Swinburne University, and I-Cats University College. - Bernama

El Salvador schools to require military-style inspections
SAN SALVADOR, Aug 19 — El Salvador's new education minister Karla Trigueros—a military officer with a flair for camouflage—ordered the country's public schools yesterday to mandate 'clean uniforms' and 'appropriate haircuts' for students. Trigueros was appointed by President Nayib Bukele on Friday, to the open dismay of teachers' unions, who warned against the 'militarisation' of education. 'Within the framework of strengthening discipline, order, and the personal presentation of the student community,' schools must enforce strict compliance with the new norms, Trigueros wrote in a memo to school principals, which she posted to social media platform X. Since her appointment, Trigueros has visited schools around the country wearing her camouflage military uniform. Her new memorandum indicates that, starting August 20, principals must greet students daily at the entrance gates of the country's more than 5,100 public schools. Principals are called on to conduct inspections and ensure students attend classes with 'clean and orderly uniforms,' 'appropriate haircuts,' and enter campuses 'with a respectful greeting.' Bukele shared Trigueros' social media post, adding: 'To build the El Salvador we dream of, it is clear that we must completely transform our educational system.' Teachers' union Salvadoran Teachers' Front posted to Facebook on Friday to voice disapproval. 'We are concerned that the already exorbitant abuses of power against students will increase, or that workplace abuse against teachers will worsen,' the union wrote. Bukele, who took office in 2019 and was reelected in 2024, enjoys popularity for his 'war' against gangs, which has reduced criminal violence to historic lows. Many Salvadoran schools were plagued by gang harassment. More than 1.2 million students, from kindergarten through high school, attend public school in El Salvador. — AFP

Education ministry to heed Agong, implement anti-bullying campaign
The education ministry said it is currently developing a 2027 school curriculum that will prioritise character education and focus on nurturing values. PETALING JAYA : The education ministry says it will heed the royal decree by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim to implement a comprehensive anti-bullying campaign in all educational institutions under its purview. The ministry said the campaign, starting at the primary school level, will focus on fostering awareness and cultivating mutual respect among students. 'Core values such as respect, discipline and compassion will be instilled in every student. The campaign will be implemented in collaboration with other ministries to ensure greater impact and effectiveness,' Bernama reported it as saying. The ministry emphasised that addressing bullying requires collective effort. 'Everyone must work together to combat bullying. It is our shared responsibility to shape a future generation that embodies strong values and noble character,' it said. It also said it is currently developing a 2027 school curriculum that will prioritise character education and focus on nurturing values to produce people who are well-mannered, ethical and possess integrity. 'The ministry humbly expresses its gratitude for the royal decree from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim regarding the urgent need to address bullying in all educational institutions under the ministry's care. 'His Majesty's words serve as a reminder to the ministry's fraternity of the wide-reaching negative impact of bullying on society and the nation,' it said. Earlier today, Sultan Ibrahim said failing to curb bullying from a young age risked creating a generation that lacks respect and compassion for others. 'Children must be educated about this issue from an early age… and will learn the importance of mutual respect and discipline through such campaigns,' he said in a Facebook post. He said bullying not only damages the mental and emotional well-being of victims but can also lead to serious tragedies. Sultan Ibrahim also said recent amendments to the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code to address bullying had demonstrated the government's commitment to tackling the issue and that a cross-ministerial approach was needed to ensure bullying is addressed comprehensively. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also called today for an immediate end to bullying in schools and the workplace, including at hospitals. He was commenting on several cases, including the recent death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir and that of tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman, who died 12 years ago.

RM600,000 to help e-hailing workers open up EPF account in Sabah
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor posing with the Sabah Moto Day participants while sitting on a motorcycle. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): The State Government will allocate about RM600,000 for gig workers in the e-hailing sector to open up Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said a total 11,109 applications have been received from e-hailing workers to contribute to the EPF. 'I would like to announce that the State Government is allocating nearly RM600,000 to assist those (e-hailing workers) who have yet to open up their EPF account,' he said at the Sabah Moto Day 8.0 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Drill Field near here on Sunday. Hajiji was also glad to note that Sabah Moto Day continued to grow exponentially attracting about 60,000 motorcylists and motor enthusiasts from all over Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei this year. The presence of many riders and visitors proved that motorcycling activities continue to hold a place in the hearts of youths and the general public, he said. 'I am impressed to see the support shown by all participants, regardless of age, race and religion, coming together to share the same passion. 'We should view this gathering from a positive perspective, as it can contribute, to some extent, to the economic generation of our state due to the large number of participants and visitors in conjunction with this programme, he said. Advising participants of the Sabah Moto Day to prioritise safety while on road, Hajiji also hoped the gathering would help create greater safety awareness among the two- wheeler enthusiasts. The Chief Minister also informed the participants that the State Government viewed youths as asset, hence various initiatives have been implemented to develop the human capital. The State Government of today had spent a total RM1.33 billion including RM848.26 million for education assistance and RM485 million specifically for talent and skills development programmes from 2021 to 2025, he said. 'This has never been done by previous state governments. We are committed to develop our youths who are our future leaders,' he said. At the end of his speech, Hajiji also led the participants to offer Al-Fatihah prayer for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.
