Penang cops nab four with RM3.72mil worth of ganja
Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the men, three locals and one Vietnamese, were arrested between 10am on Tuesday (July 22) and 3am on Wednesday (July 23) on the mainland.
"The men, aged between 31 and 39 years old, were arrested in Seberang Perai for being involved in ganja distribution activities.
"During a raid at a hotel in Bukit Mertajam, we first arrested two of the local men in a hotel room and another local man believed to be the transporter in the hotel lobby.
"During this raid, we found a canvas bag filled with nine transparent bags containing dried leaves believed to be ganja weighing around 9.23kg.
"We then found five more transparent packages with the same substance weighing 4.23kg," he said during a press conference held at the Penang contingent police headquarters in George Town, Penang on Thursday (July 24).
He said they then obtained information from the suspects that led to the arrest of a Vietnam national in the Seberang Jaya area.
"He then led us to a house which has been used as a storage place for drugs.
"Upon inspecting the premises, we seized two luggage bags containing 26 transparent packages with the same substance (ganja) weighing around 27kg.
"We then found another two black luggage bags containing 30 more transparent packages of the same substance weighing 31.2kg.
"There were another 55 transparent packages of ganja in two colourful zipped up bags weighing 40.4kg," he said.
He said based on their investigations, the suspects have been actively involved in the syndicate from March this year.
"The drugs we found could be used by up to 230,000 addicts. We believe it is for local market consumption," he said.
He said three of the suspects tested positive for drugs and had prior drug-related offences.
"All four men have been remanded for seven days from Wednesday (July 23) to July 29 for further investigations.
"During the raid, we also seized three vehicles and cash amounting to RM199,300," he said.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

SHAH ALAM: Police have seized 425.25 kilogrammes of methamphetamine valued at RM13.6 million and arrested five men during a major anti-narcotics operation. Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the arrests of individuals aged between 33 and 64 years. The series of raids conducted on Monday targeted locations around Puchong and Kuala Lumpur. Hussein revealed that the operations also uncovered a terraced house being used as a drug storage facility. 'The first suspect was arrested at a parking area in Puchong town centre with 103.87 kg of methamphetamine found inside the car he was driving.' He added that authorities subsequently arrested another suspect along the Damansara-Puchong Expressway with 37.21 grammes of methamphetamine. 'The third raid at a restaurant in Bandar Puchong Jaya led to the arrest of the third and fourth suspects.' Police checks at a terraced house in the same area uncovered 321.02 kg of methamphetamine. The fifth suspect, identified as the syndicate coordinator or leader, was apprehended near the Sri Petaling LRT station. Initial investigations indicate the first and second suspects acted as drug transporters. The third and fourth suspects served as storekeepers for the narcotics operation. Their modus operandi involved using terraced houses as storage facilities before local distribution. Police suspect the drugs were also intended for distribution to Sabah and Sarawak. Authorities did not rule out possible smuggling operations into Kalimantan, Indonesia. 'Urine tests showed three of the suspects tested positive for ketamine.' Hussein confirmed that all suspects have prior criminal records involving crime and drugs. He identified them as remnants of a major syndicate previously dismantled in Bagan Datuk, Perak last March. All suspects have been remanded for seven days starting from yesterday until August 25. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. AI Must Remain As An Assistive Tool, Not Decision Maker
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Any use of artificial intelligence (AI) that impacts individuals' rights must only be deployed after rigorous testing and with clear oversight, says former Federal Court judge Tan Sri Harmindar Singh Dhaliwal. He said while AI had the potential to transform human endeavour, it must remain an assistive tool and not a decision-maker, particularly in the criminal justice system. "AI should be an assistant, not a decision maker. In Sabah, where AI sentencing tools were piloted, the model once recommended a 10-month imprisonment with a probability of 54 per cent for an offence under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, but the magistrate imposed 12 months instead. "The message is clear, AI can assist, but human judgment must prevail,' he said during a plenary session titled 'Criminal Justice Reforms: Ensuring Ethical AI in Criminal Justice Proceedings' held in conjunction with the ASEAN Law Forum 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. Harmindar, who is also chairman of the Criminal Law Review Committee, emphasised the need for proper rules, safeguards and a clear risk-based approach before adopting AI in judicial processes. "Singapore has already issued guidelines for AI use in courts, and the Philippines is drafting an AI governance framework for its judiciary. Malaysia and other ASEAN member countries must follow suit. "We need a framework for ensuring responsible use of AI. This includes an assessment of risks, mitigation measures, and ensuring AI use cases are tested for bias, reliability and transparency before adoption,' he said while cautioning that while AI was a powerful technology, its application in criminal justice should be approached with vigilance. 'We must always remain accountable. If AI is to be used in the justice system, we must approach it with our eyes wide open, ready to address the risks in order to reap the benefits,' he added. Speaking from Singapore's perspective, counsel Colin Seow of Colin Seow Chambers said the Singapore Police Force had incorporated AI into digital forensics, enabling investigators to automatically sift through seized devices for child sexual abuse material and significantly improve the speed and accuracy of investigations.

36 Myanmar illegal immigrants arrested in Rantau Panjang
PASIR MAS: A team from the 8th Battalion of the General Operations Force arrested thirty six illegal immigrants from Myanmar travelling in a chartered bus this morning. The operation occurred in Kampung Serongga near Rantau Panjang following a tip-off received at midnight. Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid confirmed the details to reporters. The bus was intercepted at 6.30am during a routine inspection. All thirty six passengers aged between twenty and forty were detained along with the thirty seven year old local driver who also owns the vehicle. 'Out of the 36, four held passports without valid entry stamps, one had an expired passport, and 31 had no identification documents,' he stated. Nik Ros Azhan revealed the immigrants were collected from a factory in Meru, Klang. They were being transported to Rantau Panjang under the false pretense of going to a non-existent rice mill. A payment of RM2,300 for the bus service was reportedly made by the employer via a cashless transaction. Two women were among those arrested in the operation. The suspects are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63. The local driver faces charges under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. He is suspected of being involved in human trafficking activities. 'All detainees have been taken to the Pasir Mas District Police Headquarters for further investigation,' added Nik Ros Azhan. They will subsequently be handed over to the Immigration Department for further processing. - Bernama
