RM7mil allocated for drought mitigation in Malaysia's rice granaries
BAGAN SERAI: The government has allocated RM7mil for infrastructure upgrades to minimise drought impact on key rice production areas of Malaysia.
Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops.
"It is mainly to ensure that the water channels are functioning and can deliver water to the paddy plots, even if the water volume is slightly lower than usual.
"This is also one of our ways to minimise the potential negative effects on farmers' income, especially during drought seasons,' he said after officiating the 2025 Perak State-Level Agricultural Machinery and Equipment handover ceremony at Dewan Dato' Zainal Abidin Zin, here, Tuesday (June 3).
Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a statement, indicating that six areas in Peninsular Malaysia are now at Level 1 (alert) for three consecutive days, due to ongoing hot weather.
The affected areas include Larut and Matang, Kuala Kangsar, and Perak Tengah in Perak, Machang and Kuala Krai in Kelantan, and Bandar Baharu in Kedah.
In a separate matter, Arthur said that his ministry will strengthen collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies to combat cattle smuggling activities from Thailand, which are believed to threaten the country's food security.
He said enforcement actions against individuals involved in unethical activities are under the jurisdiction of the respective state governments.
"Therefore, a comprehensive engagement session between state and federal governments is essential, to harmonise laws and prevent conflicts which could undermine the nation's food biosecurity,' he said.
He added that one of the main factors contributing to smuggling activities, particularly during festive seasons, is the high demand for beef, coupled with the sector's self-sufficiency level (SSL) still falling short of the targeted benchmark. - Bernama

Mada steps up support for padi farmers ahead of expected dry spell
ALOR SETAR: The Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) is prepared for the arrival of the South-West Monsoon, which is expected to bring dry and hot weather conditions this month, to ensure the success of the first padi planting season this year. It advised farmers through a statement on Friday (June 6) to adhere strictly to the scheduled planting calendar and expedite planting to maintain a smooth agricultural cycle. "To address the anticipated water shortage, Mada has intensified the operation of drainage water reuse pumps and booster pumps to increase irrigation supply and speed up water distribution to padi fields. "Farmer cooperation is crucial during this dry season to ensure uninterrupted planting activities,' it said. Efficient on-field water management is key to ensuring equitable and sufficient distribution throughout the season, it added. It also encouraged regular monitoring to reduce the risk of pest and disease outbreaks that could affect crop yields. As of Thursday (June 5), water levels at all three of Mada's main dams remain adequate, namely Pedu Dam at 66.34%, Muda Dam at 66.87%, and Ahning Dam at 68.52%. "These levels indicate that the overall water reserves are sufficient to support irrigation needs for Season 1/2025 in Muda Area,' the statement read. Water will be released from the dams and distributed in phases according to the official Season 1/2025 Paddy Planting Schedule, it added. The agency will also continue to monitor weather developments, relying on forecasts and advisories from the Malaysian Meteorological Department to prepare for potential heat waves or prolonged dry spells. – Bernama

Federal projects in Sabah must follow set schedule

KOTA BELUD: Development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be implemented according to the set schedule. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said this is to ensure that all projects in the pre-implementation phase are initiated by the respective committees involved. Ewon, who serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Committee Meetings,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall, here. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the Special Intervention Meetings, which began earlier this year, have shown positive results.
