By: R Gonzales Text Size: 'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all parties involved in this intervention committee,' Ewon said. KOTA BELUD: Development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be implemented according to the set schedule. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said this is to ensure that all projects in the pre-implementation phase are initiated by the respective committees involved. Ewon, who serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Committee Meetings,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall, here. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the Special Intervention Meetings, which began earlier this year, have shown positive results. 'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries and the State Government,' he said. Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects. Ewon described the decline as a positive development resulting from collaboration among various parties. 'We have proposed several steps to the technical departments and project-owning ministries to ensure that emerging issues are discussed and resolved promptly. I also hope that the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to increase at the upcoming meetings,' he said. He expressed appreciation to all ministries, the State Government and the technical departments that have successfully expedited the processes of procurement, contractor appointments and tenders for previously uninitiated projects. 'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all parties involved in this intervention committee,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? WhatsApp takes down 6.8 million accounts linked to criminal scam centers, Meta says
In a Tuesday (Aug 5) announcement, Meta said it was also rolling new tools on WhatsApp to help people spot scams. — AP Photo/Patrick Sison, File NEW YORK: WhatsApp has taken down 6.8 million accounts that were "linked to criminal scam centres' targeting people online around that world, its parent company Meta said this week. The account deletions, which Meta said took place over the first six months of the year, arrive as part of wider company efforts to crack down on scams. In a Tuesday (Aug 5) announcement, Meta said it was also rolling new tools on WhatsApp to help people spot scams – including a new safety overview that the platform will show when someone who is not in a user's contacts adds them to a group, as well as ongoing test alerts to pause before responding. Scams are becoming all too common and increasingly sophisticated in today's digital world – with too-good-to-be-true offers and unsolicited messages attempting to steal consumers' information or money filling our phones, social media and other corners of the internet each day. Meta noted that "some of the most prolific' sources of scams are criminal scam centres, which often span from forced labour operated by organised crime – and warned that such efforts often target people on many platforms at once, in attempts to evade detection. That means that a scam campaign may start with messages over text or a dating app, for example, and then move to social media and payment platforms, the California-based company said. Meta, which also owns Facebook and Instagram, pointed to recent scam efforts that it said attempted to use its own apps – as well as TikTok, Telegram and AI-generated messages made using ChatGPT – to offer payments for fake likes, enlist people into a pyramid scheme and/or lure others into cryptocurrency investments. Meta linked these scams to a criminal scam centre in Cambodia – and said it disrupted the campaign in partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI. – AP .

Kua questions DAP's stance after Guan Eng's minimum wage remark
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Former Petaling Jaya MP Kua Kia Song criticised DAP's Lim Guan Eng for ignoring the fact that Malaysia is an ILO member and has worked for years to align with its standards. PETALING JAYA: Former MP and Suaram director Kua Kia Soong has questioned whether DAP's stance on social justice and equality has changed after the party's national adviser Lim Guan Eng made remarks opposing the minimum wage and EPF contributions for migrant workers. Kua said the party, which has long styled itself as 'the conscience of Malaysian politics', risks appearing like a 'hollow vessel' when it comes to defending labour rights. Advertisement He also took aim at DAP's youth wing for remaining silent on the matter. 'What is the point of maintaining a wing called 'DAP Socialist Youth' (DAPSY) if its members remain silent while the party publicly defends wage discrimination and violates international labour norms?' he asked in a statement today. 'If DAPSY cannot even take a principled stand when one of its senior leaders calls for lower wages for migrants and effectively codifies inequality into law, then it must answer a simple question: What exactly do you exist for?' While debating the 13th Malaysia Plan in Parliament this week, Lim said there was 'no need to mandate the RM1,700 minimum wage and 2% EPF contributions for migrant workers' already in the workforce. Advertisement Lim pointed to Singapore's policy of not requiring Central Provident Fund contributions for migrant workers since 2003 without repercussions from the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The former finance minister also said that Malaysia was not bound by any United Nations or ILO conventions. But Kua said this ignores the fact that Malaysia is an ILO member and has worked for years to align with its standards. 'Never mind that ILO Convention 100 mandates equal pay for equal work, or that Convention 111 prohibits discrimination based on national origin, or that Convention 143 insists on equal treatment of migrants in wages and working conditions,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Lumut RGT project to create 3,000 jobs under 13MP in Perak
IPOH: The Lumut Regasification Terminal (RGT) project, a key initiative under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), is set to create around 3,000 jobs for local residents, particularly in welding. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad confirmed the project will be developed in two phases at the Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LuMIC), with construction expected to start early next year. 'No fewer than 3,000 jobs. To me, that is quite an achievement, as the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan aims to create as many employment opportunities as possible,' he said. Saarani shared this after officiating the National-Level 'Nadwah Facing Artificial Intelligence (AI) Challenges Within the Framework of Sharia' at the Royal Perak Golf Club. He added that the state government will prioritise identifying and nurturing local talent in relevant fields to maximise the project's economic impact. The Menteri Besar also thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for including Perak Sejahtera 2030 initiatives in the 13MP. 'This shows that the Federal Government is committed to supporting and facilitating this project. Looking at the content of the 13MP, I hope this backing will continue until we succeed in making Perak a truly prosperous state,' he said. The 13MP, tabled on July 31, includes five major Perak projects: Kerian Green Integrated Industrial Park (KIGIP), High-Tech Automotive Valley (AHTV), Perak Halal Industrial Park (Perak HIP), LuMIC, and the Lumut RGT project. Petroliam Nasional Bhd will develop RGT3, with a liquefied natural gas processing capacity matching existing terminals in Sungai Udang, Melaka, and Pengerang, Johor. - Bernama
