MOT Appoints Four Firms Including Carsome To Expand Vehicle Ownership Inspection Services

BusinessToday2 days ago
The Transport Ministry (MOT) has appointed four companies to provide Change of Ownership Inspection services for private vehicles, a move aimed at easing congestion and improving access to motor vehicle inspection centres.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the initiative is part of the government's effort to liberalise the Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre segment, which was previously monopolised by Puspakom.
'This will offer the public more convenient options for ownership transfer inspections without crowding existing centres that also handle heavy vehicles,' Loke said.
The newly appointed firms, Carro Technology Sdn Bhd, Carsome Academy Sdn Bhd, Wawasan Bintang Sdn Bhd and Beriman Gold Sdn Bhd, have been granted 12 months to fulfil all regulatory and technical requirements before receiving their licenses to operate.
The companies must meet stringent criteria, including a minimum RM1 million paid-up capital, local ownership, infrastructure readiness, integration with the MySIKAP system and ISO/IEC 17020:2012 compliance. All inspection personnel must also be accredited by the Road Transport Department.
Loke emphasised that the shift from a single-player concession to a multi-license model will foster healthy competition, enhance service quality and support future policy expansions. Related

South Korea preparing to order airlines to check fuel switches on Boeing jets

The FAA advisory has recommended that operators of several Boeing models inspect the locking feature of the fuel cutoff switches. (Reuters pic) SEOUL : South Korea's transport ministry is preparing to order all airlines in the country that operate Boeing jets to examine fuel switches in accordance with a 2018 advisory from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the ministry's foreign media spokesman said today. The spokesman did not give a timeline for the checks. Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Fuel switch locks have come under scrutiny after a preliminary report into the crash of an Air India's Boeing 787-8 jet that killed 260 people last month mentioned a 2018 advisory from the FAA. The FAA advisory recommended, but did not mandate, operators of several Boeing models, including the 787, to inspect the locking feature of the fuel cutoff switches to ensure they could not be moved accidentally. Reuters reported yesterday, citing a document and sources, that the planemaker and the FAA have privately issued notifications to airlines and regulators that the fuel switch locks on Boeing planes are safe and checks are not required. The Air India preliminary report said the airline had not carried out the FAA's suggested inspections as the FAA's 2018 advisory was not a mandate. However, it also said maintenance records showed that the throttle control module, which includes the fuel switches, was replaced in 2019 and 2023 on the plane involved in the crash.

Proton all-new X50 draws 5,000 bookings in 10 days ahead of launch

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd has received 5,000 bookings for its all-new Proton X50 just 10 days after opening orders on July 5, averaging one booking every three minutes. This accounts for half of the 10,000 early bird units under a special launch promo, which includes a RM1,000 cash rebate, a limited edition Touch 'n Go card and an exclusive 'Gempak! Deal'. Full pricing will be revealed at the official launch on the evening of July 24, Proton said in a statement today. Proton Edar Sdn Bhd deputy chief executive officer Zhang Qiang said the strong response underscores Malaysians' enthusiasm for the model. "To build on this momentum, we'll begin offering test drives at our outlets from July 19 so customers can experience the X50 firsthand," he said. Zhang said Proton's Tanjong Malim plant has ramped up production to ensure immediate availability. "Our goal is to have at least 5,000 units ready for registration by end-August to minimise waiting times," he added. The new Proton X50, aimed at buyers with active lifestyles, features refreshed styling, a more powerful engine, and an upgraded 14.6-inch infotainment display. It also debuts Bahasa Melayu voice recognition and an enhanced Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System with semi-autonomous driving functions.
