Fox Sports teams up with Barstool Sports, including appearances on 'Big Noon Kickoff'

Independent17-07-2025
Fox Sports is joining forces with Barstool Sports.
Barstool Sports' programming will appear on Fox Sports 1 while founder Dave Portnoy will appear on Fox Sports 'Big Noon Kickoff' college football show. The partnership was announced Thursday afternoon.
'(Barstool owner and founder) Dave (Portnoy) has built a one-of-a-kind brand that connects with a new generation of sports fans — authentic, bold, and original. Their unique voice and loyal fanbase makes them a natural fit for our evolving multiplatform content strategy,' Fox Sports CEO and executive producer Eric Shanks said in a statement.
Portnoy graduated from Michigan, which could lead to some interesting interactions with former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer.
'Nobody has been there to defend the Kings of the Conference. That ends today,' Portnoy said in a video posted to Twitter/X.
'Big Noon Kickoff' will begin the season in Columbus, Ohio, on Aug. 29 when defending national champion Ohio State hosts Texas. The show also features host Rob Stone and analysts Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, Mark Ingram and Chris 'The Bear' Fallica.
The 'Barstool College Football Show' — which will air on Saturday's from 9-9:45 a.m. — will also be streamed across Fox's digital platforms, including Tubi.
Other Barstool personalities will also make appearances on 'Big Noon Kickoff," including Dan 'Big Cat' Katz. Barstool will also contribute to Fox's college basketball coverage and possibly horse racing.
Barstool will have a live two-hour weekday morning show on FS1 with the launch date to be announced later.
FS1 has a need for studio programming after cancelling three shows earlier this week.
'In our two-decade history, we've never had the chance to work with so much talent and resources. We can't wait to collab and bring our voice to FOX Sports' airwaves," Portnoy said in a statement.
Barstool's addition gives Fox Sports what it hopes will be its answer to Pat McAfee as well as possible inroads with the age 18-34 demographic.
Barstool previously had a relationship with ESPN, but its program was canceled after one episode in 2017 after the network received criticism both inside and outside the company.
Portnoy founded Barstool in 2004 but Penn Gaming acquired majority stake in 2023 after being an investor since 2020. Portnoy bought Barstool back later that year for $1 after Penn Gaming rebranded Barstool Sportsbook as ESPN Bet.

NFL rocked by Super Bowl scandal with around 100 players facing possible suspension

At least 100 NFL players, as well as coaches and staff from around half of the 32 teams, have been accused of violating league rules by selling their Super Bowl tickets for above face-value. That is according to a report Friday, which said an NFL investigation found that some employees and players flogged their tickets to a 'small number of "bundlers"' who were working with a reseller to sell them for inflated fees. All NFL players are allowed to buy two tickets at face-value. This year, when the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas in New Orleans, prices reportedly ranged from $950 to $7,500. On resale sites, however, some tickets were going for more than $10,000. ESPN claims the players face a possible fine and could be suspended if they refuse to pay. They will also lose the right to their allotted tickets to the next two Super Bowls. Unless they are playing in the game, in which case they will have the opportunity to buy seats. No specific players, coaches or teams who violated the policy were named but some people have already shelled out, to avoid missing playing time, according to ESPN. Players violating the agreement between the league and the NFL Players Association around the re-sale of Super Bowl tickets are reportedly subject to penalties including fines of one-and-a-half-times the face value of the tickets. Other team employees who violated the policy will reportedly be fined two times the face value of the tickets. According to reports, those players and employees who had a 'greater role' - by working directly with the 'bundlers', for instance - 'will face increased penalties' 'Our initial investigation has determined that a number of NFL players and coaches, employed by several NFL Clubs, sold Super Bowl tickets for more than the ticket's face value in violation of the policy," read a memo, sent to teams by the NFL - and cited by ESPN. 'This long-standing League Policy, which is specifically incorporated into the Collective Bargaining Agreement, prohibits League or Club employees, including players, from selling NFL game tickets acquired from their employer for more than the ticket's face value or for an amount greater than the employee originally paid for the ticket, whichever is less.'

A's reliever Jose Leclerc will undergo right shoulder surgery

July 26 - Jose Leclerc has been shut down by the Athletics, and the veteran reliever will require season-ending right shoulder surgery. Brian Schulman, the club's director of sports medicine and performance, said Friday that Arlington-based Dr. Keith Meister will perform the surgery "in the upcoming weeks." After pitching in just 10 games for the Athletics this season, Leclerc landed on the injured list on April 23 with a right lat strain. He had started to play catch, but, according to Schulman, Leclerc could not throw with the required effort and intensity. "This is a tough one, not just for us but for him, personally," Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said. "You never know what the surgery is going to entail. We're hopeful that there's a quick recovery for him, for his career." Leclerc, 31, spent his first eight major league seasons in Texas, and was a major part of the Rangers' bullpen that excelled during the 2023 World Series run. In that season, Leclerc, used as a set-up man, pitched to a 2.68 ERA and fanned 67 batters in 57 innings. He closed on a part-time basis for Texas in 2018 and 2019, amassing 26 saves in those seasons. For his career, the native of the Dominican Republic has appeared in 360 games, all but three of which have come out of the bullpen. He has 41 saves and a 3.34 ERA. He signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Athletics in January. --Field Level Media

Rays SS Ha-Seong Kim (back) placed on IL

July 26 - The Tampa Bay Rays placed shortstop Ha-Seong Kim on the 10-day injured list prior to Friday night's game against the Cincinnati Reds. Kim injured his lower back during Monday's 8-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox and hasn't played since. The move is retroactive to Tuesday. Tampa Bay activated outfielder Jonny DeLuca (right shoulder) from the 60-day IL in a corresponding move. DeLuca was injured in April. Kim, 29, has played in just 10 games with the Rays and is batting .226 with one homer and three RBIs in 31 at-bats. He played his first game for Tampa Bay on July 4 after recovering from offseason right shoulder surgery and a hamstring injury he sustained during his rehab. Kim signed a two-year, $29 million deal with the Rays in the offseason and was slated to be the team's starting shortstop. He is making $13 million this season and has a player option for $16 million in 2026. Kim tore the labrum while diving back to first base on Aug. 18 as a member of the San Diego Padres and missed the rest of the 2024 season. DeLuca, 27, last played for Tampa Bay on April 6. He batted .435 (10-for-23) with one RBI in nine games this season. DeLuca was expected to return in a matter of weeks but multiple setbacks pushed back the timetable. Tampa Bay also recalled left-hander Mason Montgomery from Triple-A Durham and designated right-hander Jacob Waguespack for assignment. Montgomery, 25, is 1-2 with a 5.74 ERA in 40 relief appearances for the Rays this season. The Rays had a roster opening because they optioned right-hander Taj Bradley (6-6, 4.61) to Durham on Thursday's off day. Waguespack, 31, was 1-0 with an 0.46 ERA in 15 relief outings for Durham. He was DFA'd to open up a 40-man roster spot for DeLuca. --Field Level Media
