Your Teen's Post Went Viral. Now What?

With the rise of TikTok and ever changing algorithms, the odds of going viral online are higher than ever before. Whether it's a strategic play for views or a throwaway post that catches fire, going viral can be both exciting and terrifying. As a parent in the 21st century, it can be difficult to know exactly how to handle this very niche phenomenon.
'Nowadays, [anyone can go] viral, whether from a post of their own or a post of someone else's,' Gen Z culture writer and critic Steffi Cao explains. When a post goes viral, it spreads very quickly, often within hours, with high levels of engagement. This can happen to anyone at any time and, if your teen's profiles aren't on private, it means their videos can be viewed by millions of people around the world.
Sans a parenting guidebook on all things social media, it can be difficult to know how to handle your teen going viral. It's something that many people aren't mentally or emotionally equipped to deal with, especially young people. Below, we spoke to experts on how to cope if your teen goes viral.
While excitement and pride might be the first emotions teens feel when they go viral, Dr. Tamara Soles, child psychologist and director of The Secure Child based in Montreal, Canada, says that anxiety, embarrassment, and overwhelm can also be triggered as a response to sudden fame.
'Going viral can be thrilling, but it also puts them under an intense spotlight that even adults are not always emotionally prepared for,' Dr. Soles explains. While the validation of likes and comments can be exciting at first, some might find it difficult to deal with, especially if there's harmful comments involved.
'Sudden internet fame can trigger anxiety, sleep issues, obsessive screen checking, and even depression—especially if the attention turns negative,' Dr. Soles says. 'Teens may also struggle with identity confusion or feel pressure to replicate the success of a viral post and continue to grow their account.'
In addition to emotional distress, Cao says that going viral has several other risks, including harassment, doxxing, and hate campaigns. She also notes that there's 'the general stripping of privacy and a larger digital footprint that we know now is likely being used for surveillance and data mining, now including for generative AI.'
Another concern can be a phone addiction or dependency, with your teen constantly checking and refreshing their apps to stay up-to-date with the latest comments. With apps designed specifically to target the human reward system, going viral can increase the desire for quick dopamine hits.
While some kids might want to continue to engage and capitalize on the attention to grow their accounts, Dr. Soles recommends parents help their teens find ways to break out of that instant gratification mindset.
In collaboration with your teen, she recommends creating a social safety plan that can involve strategies such as:
Avoid reading comments
Have someone else delete harmful comments
Turn off commenting
Switch the account to private
Limit access to the phone in general
'It's important to reassure [your child] that it's okay to step back. Keep routines consistent and provide space to process their feelings,' Dr. Soles adds.
There are some opportunities where going viral can be used positively. These include using this temporary fame to raise money or awareness for specific causes, a boost in confidence, the opening of creative or career opportunities, and even connecting with supportive communities.
Cao notes that many people are often looking for opportunities for virality to help launch their careers as influencers, receive free merchandise from PR companies, or even age-old bragging rights among their friends.
There are several protective measures you can take if your child is being harassed online. First and foremost, Dr. Soles recommends documenting the harassment, reporting it to the platform, and blocking offenders. You can even contact school officials or law enforcement if the case is serious enough.
Cao adds that deleting your teen's account or switching them to private helps guarantee their information will not be used as public data and helps avoid random accounts from messaging or harassing your teen.
Logging off is one of the simplest ways to help avoid unwanted situations. 'The internet, even if it is more of a parallel reality that travels with us in our pockets—no longer this tethered place—is still something we can choose to opt out of,' Cao adds.To help keep young people safe online, Cao suggests the following important strategies:Don't post "live" from specific locations
If creating content in a recognizable area, wait until you've left that location to post
Refrain from sharing personal information or location on social media"General social media safety rules like this are important to teach young people who are navigating the internet," Cao adds. "I highly recommend alt accounts that are primarily used for content-viewing rather than personal posting for anyone who wants to maintain some semblance of privacy."While everyone reacts to going viral differently, Dr. Soles says parents should watch their teens' behavior for signs of distress, which can include changes in sleep, appetite, mood, or talks about not wanting to go online or school. If you notice any of these changes in your teen, Dr. Soles recommends reaching out to a mental health professional immediately. 'Don't wait for things to get 'bad enough',' she stresses.

Like most modern parents, I worry about screens. But I've also seen the good that can come from technology. I believe it's possible to raise emotionally intelligent, creative, and grounded kids — not by banning screens, but by modeling how to use them with intention. Unexpectedly, smartphones made my kids feel less isolated We've gotten all three of our daughters' phones in eighth grade, and when we got our youngest daughter her first phone, I braced for her to become more withdrawn from friends and family. Middle school had been a little lonely — her closest friends lived in our neighborhood but went to different schools, and the lunchroom social shuffle wasn't always kind. I worried a phone would only isolate her more. But the opposite happened. Group texts became lifelines: inside jokes, spontaneous hangouts, encouragement on rough days. Her phone became a bridge, not a wall. That bridge also reaches all the way to college, where her older sister just wrapped up her freshman year. They text nearly every day — silly memes, heart emojis, cute photos of our dog snoring on the couch. Their relationship hasn't faded with distance; it's shifted and, in some ways, grown stronger through the digital thread that connects them. Phones in our family aren't just for staying in touch. My oldest daughter has begun to find her voice around social justice issues through Instagram — sharing resources, following organizers, and supporting friends through these outlets. My middle and youngest daughters, both budding foodies, dive into recipe videos on TikTok and YouTube — my youngest doesn't have these apps yet, but follows her sister's lead. The other night, they made homemade boba tea — yes, including from-scratch tapioca pearls — from a video my middle daughter saved. It took forever, but they laughed the whole way through. And the tea? Surprisingly good. I'm talking to them about technology and modeling healthy boundaries I'm not just a bystander in all this. I'm in it with them. I send my daughters memes, reels, and articles — funny, profound, or just weird in the best way. Sometimes it's a way to check in. Sometimes it's how we process the world together. I've had better conversations with my teens sparked by a 20-second video than from the age-old "How was school?" Of course, we set boundaries. We delay social media until high school — my youngest can get those apps next year if she requests them. We talk about the difference between passive scrolling and active engagement. We ask questions like: What does this video do for you? Do you ever see things that make you uncomfortable? And we try to practice what we preach. My husband and I both use our phones for work, and we're learning to narrate that: "I'm writing an article," or "I'm researching something," instead of just disappearing into our screens. That said, I'm guilty of scrolling, too — and my kids have no problem calling me out on it. Recently, I joined stop-motion artist Colette Peri's "Touch Grass" phone boundaries challenge, and it's made me more mindful of my own habits. Setting screen limits for myself — like no scrolling in bed, and taking phone-free walks — has been good for me and, I hope, good modeling for them. I'm building up to a phone-free day, too. Not quite there yet. Our kids don't need us to be perfect; they need us to be honest. Technology is part of our family's life, like books, board games, and backpacks. I'm not here to police my kids into tech shame, though I definitely fall into that trap sometimes. I want to raise kids who can navigate this world with curiosity, empathy, and agency. Phones and social media aren't going anywhere. So instead of pretending it's all doom, I'm leaning in — asking better questions, setting boundaries, and yes, sending a few cat memes along the way. Because if parenting has taught me anything, it's this: We don't get to choose the world our kids grow up in — but we do get to help them live wisely and well within it.

If Gen Z is known as the side hustle generation, Gen Alpha may soon take the crown. A survey of 2,002 U.S. Gen Alpha and Gen Z individuals (ages 12 to 28) by social commerce platform Whop found that more than half are using the internet not simply for brain rot and catching up with friends, but also for earning cash. The 'iPad kid' generation—the oldest of whom are just 15—are already putting their screen time to good use. Nearly half (47.1%) are actively earning online through digital side hustles like selling vintage clothing, streaming video games, and posting on social media. That's a 15% increase from last year. When it comes to knowing someone who makes money online, that number jumps to 72.3%. Instead of relying on pocket money, Gen Alpha members are earning an average of $13.92 per hour from their digital pursuits—nearly double the U.S. federal minimum wage of $7.25. Based on those hourly earnings, they're pulling in the equivalent of a $28,000 full-time annual salary, all before turning 16. At the high end, 1.7% of Gen Alpha and Gen Z hustlers earned more than $40,000 last year. Social media platforms have opened new doors for work, and young people raised online are best equipped to step through them. The most common side hustle is reselling new or vintage clothes, with one in five (20.1%) of Gen Aers and Gen Zers earning income this way. Others bring in money from streaming video games (14.1%) or competing in esports tournaments (13.1%). About one in 10 (10.5%) are monetizing content by posting on social media or 'clipping'—repurposing YouTube videos, podcasts, or livestreams into short, shareable clips with viral potential. Only 9.1% are currently earning through brand sponsorships, though many still dream of becoming full-time creators. 'Social media raised this generation, so making money on the internet is now the norm. When you grow up watching YouTube creators and Twitch streamers living lavish lifestyles, it's only natural to want to be part of that,' Brett Malinowski, the marketing director at Whop, tells Fast Company. 'Many of today's biggest creators started posting content when they were teenagers—and now they realize that this is a way for them to make real money.' So, what are these young hustlers saving for? While many are investing in cryptocurrency or stocks, or putting money aside for college, a house, or a big purchase, their main goal is a familiar one: gaining financial independence from the Bank of Mom and Dad. These side hustles are also reshaping how they use screen time. Gen Alpha now spends 3.5 fewer hours per week on screens for entertainment or relaxation compared with Gen Z. Instead, they're dedicating about a fifth (20.3%) of their screen time to their hustles, slightly more than Gen Z, at 19.5%. With the rising cost of living driving more people to seek extra income, the youngest cohort of workers are leading the charge—and they don't plan to slow down. Over half of Gen Aers (51.5%) say they intend to turn their side hustle into a full-fledged career. As these generations enter the workforce in greater numbers, they're ditching the traditional path and forging their own. They're not just getting the bag—they're redefining how it's earned.
