Gujarat plane crash: 9,300 hours of flying experience between captain manning flight & his co-pilot
Sabharwal & Kunder
An hour before takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal had called home and told his family he would ring again once he reached London. That was not to be. His last call was to air traffic control before AI171 crashed and burned.
Sabharwal, a senior pilot, had 8,200 flying hours, aviation regulator DGCA said. A senior colleague, however, said his flying experience would be much more. "The regulator's eGCA platform is fairly new and may not have his entire record," the colleague said. "He was a very good, quiet person who flew the Airbus A310, Boeing 777 and B787. He kept his head down and was a diligent worker."
Co-pilot Clive Kunder had 1,100 hours flying experience. Commanding a commercial aircraft requires at least 1,500 hours; Kunder was first flying officer on the nearly 10 hour flight, assisting Sabharwal. Expressing grief over the tragedy, actor Vikrant Massey wrote on Instagram, "It pains even more to know that my uncle, Clifford Kunder, lost his son..." Several posts on social media mourned Kunder's death and highlighted his roots in Mangaluru.

'Marines, Go Home!': Americans Scream At 'No Kings' Protest; Horse-mounted Cop Kicks Them
Man Who Flew Same Air India Plane Before Crash, Flags Issues In Viral Post Seen By 4 Million People In a chilling revelation, Delhi-based flyer Akash Vatsa claims he flew on the same Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner—just two hours before it crashed near Ahmedabad while operating as AI171 to London. Speaking to ANI, Vatsa said he experienced multiple issues onboard, including malfunctioning air-conditioning and flickering in-flight entertainment. He also shared that he observed 'unusual flap movements' mid-air. His viral tweet, seen by over 4 million people, includes footage from inside the aircraft, showing visibly uncomfortable passengers. While aviation experts note that flap activity and AC behavior can be within operational norms, Vatsa's account raises fresh concerns about aircraft fitness prior to one of India's worst aviation disasters. Air India has not yet responded publicly to Vatsa's claim. The plane crashed minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 265 people. The aircraft had flown in from Delhi just hours earlier.#airindiacrash #akashvatsa #boeing787 #flightai171 #ahmedabadcrash #airindia #aviationsafety #viralvideo #toi #toibharat #bharat #breakingnews #indianews 12.6K views | 2 days ago

NGO plants saplings in memory of plane crash victims
Madurai: As a tribute to the victims of the tragic Air India flight crash that occurred in Ahmedabad, Paravai Foundation, a Madurai-based NGO, planted 270 saplings around the Kodikulam tank near Surya Nagar on Sunday. The initiative aims to serve as a living memorial for the lives lost in the accident. "Each sapling symbolises a life, and the drive is our humble tribute to the memory of the victims," said Cholan Kubendran, the NGO's founder. The foundation has been involved in environmental initiatives, particularly tree planting drives across schools and public spaces in Madurai district. For this initiative, native species suitable for the tank ecosystem were selected to ensure long-term ecological sustainability. Volunteers, school students, and residents participated in the planting drive.
