Raven Inn regulars captured on camera in the early 2000s

WELCOME to bygones as we raise a glass to a very special Powys pub.
The Raven Inn in Welshpool, located near the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, is a historical pub with a strong connection to the town's railway.
It stands on the site of a former mill and alehouse, with some Tudor structures still remaining.
The pub's name and location are closely tied to the Raven Square area, which was a key point on the light railway line.
There's an old photo in the bar showing a row of cottages, including an alehouse called The Black Lion.
Slater's Directory of 1858 lists the pub as The Raven with Samuel Oliver as landlord.
The light railway line used to have a stop called Raven Square Halt, where passenger trains would stop and these days neighbours the Welshpool station since the line's restoration.
These pictures all range from the start of the 2000s.

Filming has wrapped on posh Springfield Gardens, where it is thought crew captured drone-style, sweeping footage for scenic shots. They have vowed to use as little CGI as possible in creating in the new HBO project. A source said: 'Almost everything can be done on purpose-built sets and sounds stages these days but without CGI and computer wizardry there needs to be some external scenic shots too. "Springfields Gardens is the double of the street built on the Watford set so looks like it will be used as the real Privet Drive." This comes after Nick Frost was spotted filming in London as he completely transformed into Hagrid. Scenes were shot as London's Borough High Street was turned into magical Diagon Alley after it was taken over by film crews. Trefeglwys Show responds to tannoy commentary criticism

Organisers of an agricultural show in a Powys village have responded to criticism about tannoy commentary made about a political party. Trefeglwys Show returned for another fun family day out on Saturday, August 1, with attractions such as a stunt show, speed sheering and a children's fairground. Organisers said: 'We're really pleased to hear that so many of you enjoyed the show—an enormous amount of effort goes in from local volunteers and supporters, and it's always rewarding to see the community come together.' However, the Show organisers said that they were aware that 'not everyone found the commentary to their liking' with one person telling the County Times that the Labour party was criticised for being 'terrible' and 'will be the death of farming'. It came amid announcements highlighting the presence of Reform and Conservative stands people could attend, and saying Labour had not attended, the County Times was told. In response, Trefeglwys Show said: 'Our village agricultural show is open to all individuals, businesses, community groups, and political parties. "In recent years, the Conservative Party has regularly attended. Like any other party, they are welcome. "We remain entirely non-partisan and would equally welcome representatives from any political group or community organisation. 'It's important to understand that we do not censor or exclude any party or group from attending or being acknowledged. "However, we can only include those who choose to engage and ask to be part of the public programme. Announcements during the show are made in support of our sponsors, trade stands, and those who actively contribute. 'We would especially like to say that we welcome input and comments from members of this community —and anyone who wants to help shape or improve future shows. "This event is organised for the whole community, and your feedback, involvement, and contributions are valued and encouraged. 'Thank you again to everyone who supported the show this year—we couldn't do it without you.'

Probus Club hears tales of historical Tenby figures

Glyn Harries, a history graduate from Swansea University, was welcomed by club president Patrick Jones. Mr Harries introduced members of the Narberth and District Probus Club to 10 personalities from Tenby, some better known than others. The presentation began in the 15th century with Thomas White, who served as Tenby's mayor five times. He is noted for aiding the future Tudor king, Henry VII, in his escape to France. Henry VII, born in Pembroke Castle, later claimed the English throne from Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. Next, Mr Harries spoke about Robert Recorde, born in Tenby in 1512. He was a physician in the royal court and a mathematician, credited with introducing the equals sign (=) into mathematics. Sir William Paxton, recognised for his contribution to establishing Tenby and its harbour as a seaside resort, was born in 1744. The audience also learned about Peggy Davies, who introduced the popular bathing machines to South Beach. Margaret Jenkins, who became Tenby's 526th mayor in 1928 and served on the council for 25 years, was recognised. Her daughter was the first female member of Pembrokeshire County Council. Nina Catherine Stokes (1873 – 1963), who served as a nurse and taught on the front lines during World War I with the British Expeditionary Force, was also mentioned. Frank Britain Mason, a journalist who was initially barred from attending council meetings but was later granted access due to the Press Bill, was another personality discussed. Finally, the audience learned about Augustus and Gwen John, brother and sister artists known for their extravagant behaviour. Both attended the Slade College of Art in London. Ms John once became the mistress of the famous sculptor Rodin, and Mr John reportedly had more than 100 mistresses. Chris Stevens gave a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Mr Harries for an engaging talk. The club's next meeting, scheduled for August 28, will feature Paul Eades, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Bee Keeping Centre, as the guest speaker. The club meets at Plas Hyfryd Hotel, Narberth, at 12pm.
