Mikal Bridges and the Knicks are once again heavy favorites vs. the Celtics in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Wednesday night.
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
When Indiana (4) took Game 1 of its second-round matchup with Cleveland (1) on Sunday night, that upset was expected to the be the exception to the rule, as higher seeds Boston (over New York), Oklahoma City (over Denver) and Minnesota (over Golden State) were all heavy favorites on Monday and Tuesday night.
But after the Knicks, Nuggets and Warriors joined Indiana in pulling Game 1 upsets, the Celtics have a chance to reassert themselves tonight at TD Garden.
Boston led Game 1 by as many as 20 points midway through the third quarter. But the Celtics' 3-point-heavy offense went cold down the stretch, and the Knicks outscored the C's 33-21 in the fourth quarter and OT to steal an improbable 108-105 win.
Boston's 15-for-60 (not a misprint) night from downtown sparked a ton of questions about whether it should look to take more shots from inside the arc. The Celtics will (probably) take fewer than 60 3-pointers tonight, but don't expect them to abandon the strategy that won them last year's Finals in dominant fashion.

Knicks vs. Celtics Game 2 Player Props
Jayson Tatum 30+ Points (+135 at bet365) -- 0.75 units
If there's one safe bet going into this game, it's that Tatum has heard he needs to be more aggressive going to the paint and drawing free throws. He took just eight of his 23 field-goal attempts from inside in Game 1. While he struggled on both his 2-pointers (3-for-8) and his 3-pointers (4-for-15), the biggest issue was that he took just seven free throws.
The good news for Tatum backers in Game 2 is that after drawing just four FTA in Game 1 vs. the Magic in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals (and missing Game 2 with a wrist injury), Tatum took at least 11 free-throws in each of Games 3, 4 and 5. Related: he finished those contests with 36, 37 and 35 points.
Against a New York defense that switched screens much more than usual, the 6-foot-8 Tatum had 10 FGA and 2 FTA in Game 1 while being defended by 6-foot-2 Jalen Brunson. He went just 3-for-8 on 3-pointers and 1-for-2 on 2-pointers in that matchup despite his massive size advantage.
If the Knicks continue to switch tonight and live with Brunson on Tatum, the six-time All-Star should post much numbers much closer to the ones that made him an All-Star this year (45 percent FG shooting, 34 percent 3-point shooting, 53.7 effective FG percentage) than what he produced in Game 1 (30.4 percent FG shooting, 26.7 3-point shooting, 39.1 effective FG percentage).
Assuming we see anything resembling the Tatum we saw during the regular season and in three of his four games vs. the Magic in the first round, 30 points feels well within reach in a game Boston badly needs to win to get back on track.
Knicks vs. Celtics Game 2 Pick, Best Bets
The Celtics have some questions to answer, especially if Kristaps Porzingis and/or Sam Hauser are out tonight. Still, law of averages alone is enough to like Boston to win this one after New York shot 17-for-37 from 3-point land in Game 1, while the Celtics (if you haven't heard) went just 15-for-60.
The question is whether the Celtics will cover the double-digit spread. That hardly feels like a slam-dunk, so let's go with Boston to start off strong (remember, this team led Game 1 61-45 at the half) and cover the first-half spread. I also like the over in a bounce-back night for the Celtics' offense.
Knicks vs. Celtics Game 2 Best Bets:
Celtics 1H -6.5 (-120 at DraftKings) -- 1 unit
Over 211 (-110 at DK) -- 1 unit

Sources: Some Knicks players weren't thrilled with Tom Thibodeau, with his firing being spearheaded by owner James Dolan

OKLAHOMA CITY — The initial shock has worn off from the New York Knicks firing Tom Thibodeau after a successful five-year run and a trip to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2000. What was clear was Thibodeau's firing being spearheaded by Knicks owner James Dolan, sources told Yahoo Sports. Dolan and team president Leon Rose held exit meetings with key Knicks players and the complaints were clear. Advertisement Dolan, whom sources said was never a huge Thibodeau fan through the years, asked the questions in the meeting while Rose took a secondary role. A couple of players felt like Thibodeau played the starters too many minutes and felt he had an inability to adjust, sources said, and another player said he didn't feel like he could play for Thibodeau if the coach returned next season. The complaints obscured the success, perhaps — four winning seasons in five years, the last two being 50-win campaigns. Getting to at least the second round in the last three years was commendable, but perhaps the Knicks left food on the table in the playoffs, falling short to the Pacers last year and this year, the latter in spectacular fashion. Advertisement Thibodeau did play his starters a lot and didn't develop a bench the way other coaches have. Mikal Bridges openly complained about playing too many minutes and that's when it seemed things started to go sideways. You don't fire Thibodeau with three years and $30 million on a contract extension that won't kick in until next season because you lose in the conference finals. You fire Thibodeau because you want to. But it's unclear where the Knicks go from here. Perhaps they try to poach Jason Kidd from Dallas, maybe highly thought of assistant Johnnie Bryant gets his first job — albeit in a difficult situation. Advertisement Some have suggested the coaching search will go into Summer League in July, because it seems the Knicks don't have an outlined plan for the future. Either way, things are intriguing, if not wholly uncertain, in Manhattan.

Jalen Williams on Thunder's NBA Finals Game 2 stakes: 'Pressure is a privilege'

Jalen Williams on Thunder's NBA Finals Game 2 stakes: 'Pressure is a privilege' With the entire sports world's attention on the 2025 NBA Finals, Jalen Williams has come a long way over the last four years from small-school Santa Clara, which likely only had a couple thousand people in the stands, to a global stage with millions watching. The championship series is only one game old, but the Oklahoma City Thunder are already at their first hurdle. Tyrese Haliburton's Game 1 game-winner put the title favorite in a 0-1 series hole. Goes without saying, but the Thunder must win Game 2 or risk being on the cusp of an all-time upset. If the Thunder even the series 1-1, Williams will likely play a big part. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lu Dort did enough to secure a Game 1 win, but the rest of the starters struggled. For the 24-year-old, that was 17 points on 6-of-19 shooting. Besides a hot three-minute fourth-quarter stretch, Williams couldn't buy a bucket. His process was solid. The rhythm scorer created quality mid-range looks and bullied his way into the basket. But the lack of touch created frustration. Expect Williams to bounce back. The Pacers don't possess defensive titans to slow down the All-Star player. If you can copy his shot chart, he'll surely enjoy better luck on balls that rimmed out or barely missed. The 24-year-old stayed cool when asked about the heavy expectations he shoulders. "I try and think of myself as somebody that's very uncommon. I don't ever think that I'm in my third year because then that allows me to make excuses. I should just go out there and play," Williams said. "Pressure is a privilege. So I enjoy being counted on and doing that, and I just think I've been counted on since, I feel like, last year, to be totally honest, just in regard to being there for the rest of the guys. And now we're here in the Finals." The Thunder have said all the right things after Game 1's stunner. We'll soon see if they can also walk the walk on the court. If you had to make a bet, expect the team that's only lost two in a row once this year to make up for its avoidable mistakes.

Pacers vs Thunder in NBA Finals Game 1 was least-watched opener outside of COVID-era games

While local fans were ecstatic to see Tyrese Haliburton's heroics in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, others weren't interested in the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder. The first game of the finals averaged a 4.7 rating and 8.91 million viewers on ABC. It was one of the lowest-rated and least-watched NBA Finals openers since Nielsen tracking began in 1988. The viewership was more than the 2020 and 2021 finals, but those were impacted by COVID-19. Game 1 of the Pacers–Thunder NBA Finals averaged a 4.7 rating and 8.91 million viewers on ABC, making it the lowest-rated and least-watched Finals opener since Nielsen tracking began in 1988—excluding the COVID-impacted 2020 and 2021 series, per @paulsen_smw Last season's NBA Finals opener between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks averaged a 5.8 rating and 11.31 million viewers.
