Man strangled girlfriend in rage over vape liquid
'I am constantly looking over my shoulder when I go anywhere out of fear I will bump into Nathan,' said the victim
WalesOnline reporter confronts man who strangled girlfriend
A man strangled his girlfriend for 30 seconds then punched her to the head as she lay defenceless on the floor. Nathan Howells, a 20-year-old from Bridgend, was in a rage because his then-partner had refused to go out and buy him vape fluid, Cardiff Crown Court heard.
The victim described her 14-month relationship with Howells as "controlling". The court heard he would check her phone and prevent her from using social media. His behaviour culminated on October 29 last year in a terrifying episode of domestic abuse at her home.
Prosecutor Kirsten Murphy said Howells had asked her to go to a shop and buy him e-liquid for his vape. When she refused he began throwing items around the room. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter .
"These included cushions from the sofa and drawers from cupboards," said Ms Murphy. "He punched a hole in the living room wall and pushed her to the chest, causing her to stumble back.
"He called her useless. He used both hands to squeeze her throat for 30 seconds, causing her to feel lightheaded.

"She fell backwards, landing on her back, and while she was on the floor he punched her to the head and ribs, causing immediate pain. She went upstairs and he followed her, kicking her belongings downstairs."
The victim managed to message a family member on Snapchat, asking them to come over, but out of fear that Howells would see it she sent a follow-up message telling them not to worry. She was left with bruising and red marks on her neck.
In her victim personal statement she said she had been struggling to sleep since the attack as she "constantly" replayed the incident, adding: "I am constantly looking over my shoulder when I go anywhere out of fear I will bump into Nathan."
Howells, of Tremgarth in Wildmill, pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation, assault and criminal damage. His barrister Jac Brown said he had no previous convictions and that on the morning of the offences he had learned of his aunt's death.
"He became deliberately argumentative with the complainant and he recognises he simply lost it with her," said Mr Brown.
The probation service assessed Howells as posing a medium risk of harm to the victim. Mr Brown argued this could be managed with a restraining order.
"Prior to these offences he was unemployed and a frequent smoker of cannabis, which he used to cope with his unemployment," said Mr Brown.
"He has realised cannabis will not help him and has abstained for several months now, while enjoying stability as a permanent contractor in a warehouse."
Passing sentence, Judge Paul Hobson told Howells: "People who engage in behaviour of this kind, very often young men, should expect to be severely punished. An act of strangulation is inherently dangerous and terrifying for its victim. You only have to think what it would be like to be strangled and have difficulty breathing to realise why that is so."
But the judge also took into account Howells' young age, the absence of previous convictions, and evidence that he had shown "some remorse".
He imposed 12 months in a young offender institute suspended for two years. As it became clear Howells would be spared jail, there were gasps and tears of happiness from two women in the public gallery. The defendant himself showed no emotion.
Howells was handed a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 180 hours of unpaid work. He must pay £600 in compensation and £100 in prosecution costs.

An order restraining him from contacting the victim will be in place for five years.

Boy, 12, is abducted 'by pedophile' after youngsters' 'To Catch a Predator' sting went horribly wrong
A 12-year-old boy's attempt to pull off a 'To Catch a Predator'-style plot with his friends went horribly wrong when a known offender abducted him. The boy and at least nine of his friends cooked up the risky stunt in Airdrie, north of Calgary, in Canada to lure in a 37-year-old man via Snapchat. They arranged a meeting with the mark, identified as Zain Alnoor Merchant, and the boy jumped into his car while his friends filmed. 'One 12-year-old male got into the suspect's vehicle voluntarily so that the other youth could record the interaction,' the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said. 'This is when the suspect drove away.' The teen managed to flee the car when it stopped at a red light and called 911. Police were soon on Merchant's tail, but he refused to stop. The RCMP, with help from Calgary police and a helicopter, tracked the car to northeast Calgary where they arrested Merchant. He is charged with abducting a person under 14, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, kidnapping, and forcible confinement. Other charges are fleeing from police and three counts of breaching his probation by contacting a minor and using the internet. Police warned against plotting 'amazingly dangerous' pedophile stings, which they said were growing trend online among teenagers. 'It's such a dangerous situation to put themselves in. We don't encourage anybody to take these vigilante steps,' Airdrie RCMP Corporal Christopher Hrynyk said. 'We've had more than one investigation on file with this offender, which again speaks to the dangerous and high-risk nature of meeting strangers, conversing with strangers… We do not encourage any of this behavior,' said Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams Sgt. Mark Auger. 'A lot of these setups and these stings will end in violence, in suicide, in sexual assault. It's not worth the risk.' Pedophile stings were popularized by the long-running Dateline segment To Catch a Predator, hosted by Chris Hansen. Show employees posing as children in online chatrooms and forums ensnared perverts wanting to meet them for sex. When they showed up at the meeting, they would instead by met by Hansen, who confronted them on camera before police moved in to arrest them. The setup made a comeback in recent years, with YouTubers and other social media personalities pulling off the same stings. However, these attempts by largely untrained vigilantes and influencers, with no law enforcement training, often go wrong. Even if everything goes to plan, they usually make it much harder for police to prosecute the pedophiles. Merchant faced Airdrie Court of Justice on Thursday and will remain at Calgary Remand Centre until a bail hearing next Thursday.

Father of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown charged with attempted murder in Las Vegas
The father of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown is facing attempted murder charges in Las Vegas after authorities say he stabbed another man during a parking lot confrontation. According to police, officers were called to the 1500 block of South Buffalo Drive at 5.42pm on Tuesday, where they found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds. The victim was rushed to a local hospital and remained in critical condition. In a statement, a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson said the suspect, later identified as 57-year-old Quenton Marcelles Brown, was stopped a short distance from the scene and taken into custody. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of attempted murder. TMZ first reported that the altercation began after Brown allegedly dinged the victim's car door with his Lincoln Navigator. A heated argument followed, during which Brown allegedly stabbed the man in the back and stomach. Court records reviewed Wednesday listed Brown as an inmate at the Clark County facility. A person with knowledge of the case, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it, confirmed that the man arrested is Jaylen Brown's father. The Celtics declined to comment.
