7 arrested after 10 children found sexually abused in bunker of Alabama home: police

Seven people have been arrested in connection with an alleged child sex trafficking ring in Alabama, with victims as young as 3, police said.
Bibb County Sheriff Jody Wade said during a press conference on July 23 that ten children were abused as part of an alleged trafficking ring run out of a home in Brent, about 50 miles southwest of Birmingham.
The children are between 3 to 15 years old, but officials expect more victims and more arrests could be possible. USA TODAY reached out to the Bibb County Sheriff's Office on July 25.
Wade also said officials are investigating whether the ring is connected to a gang whose main source of income is child sex trafficking.
"I've been in law enforcement for 33 years and this is absolutely the most horrible thing I've ever seen when it comes to victimization of children," Wade said. "Like I say, I know God's forgiveness is boundless, but if there was a limit to it, I think we've reached it."
Child sex trafficking ring was run out of storm shelter bunker, police say
The alleged trafficking ring, which officials believe started around 2022, was run out of a storm shelter bunker in the yard of a home. The top of the bunker was covered by a carport, Wade said.
The bunker "was a pretty good size to where you could actually live in there comfortably," and had a toilet and mattress, Wade said.
The victims were sometimes tied to a pole or bed inside the bunker. Officials also believe drugs were involved, according to Wade.
"I think it may have been something not necessarily a narcotic, more something like to make them more a little bit more drowsy and a little bit more compliant for the ones that were physically able to somewhat try to fight back and protect themselves," Wade said.
7 suspects arrested in child sex trafficking ring
Seven suspects have been arrested so far in connection to the alleged trafficking ring, but more arrests could be possible as the investigation continues. Some of the suspects in custody are relatives of the victims, Wade said. Their names and charges include:
William Chase McElroy: four counts of first-degree rape, six counts of first-degree sodomy, six counts of human trafficking, four counts of first-degree kidnapping
Dalton Terrell: five counts of first-degree rape, seven counts of first-degree sodomy, six counts of human trafficking, four counts of first-degree kidnapping
Andres Velazquez-Trejo: six counts of human trafficking
Timothy St. John: two counts of first-degree rape, four counts of first-degree sodomy, four counts of human trafficking, three counts of first-degree kidnapping, one count of bestiality, one count of aggravated cruelty to animals
Rebecca Brewer: eight counts of human trafficking, eight counts of first-degree kidnapping, three counts of sexual torture
Ricky Terrell: one count of first-degree rape
Sarah Louise Terrell: one count of sexual torture, two counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old
'You can't heal from this'
Wade said police were tipped off to possible child abuse in February by the local Department of Human Resources.
The victims have been removed from the home and are receiving support services including counseling, Wade said.
"They'll carry this vividly for the rest of their lives," Wade said. "So, all we can do is the best we can by them to help them get past this. You can't heal from this, but you can move on as best you can."

Police offer £20,000 reward for information over fatal stabbing

Police are offering £20,000 for any information into the fatal stabbing of a 20-year-old man in an east London park, a year after his death. Imran Maroof, 20, was killed on 27 July last year after reports of a fight in Plashet Park, Newham. Police officers arrived at the scene at 7.38pm to find the young man with stab injuries. Despite attempts by the emergency services to stabilise Mr Maroof, the Metropolitan Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old boy who could not be named for legal reasons was arrested the following month in connection with the murder, appearing later at Bexley Magistrates' Court, but he was subsequently released. A spokesperson for the force said the case against the teenager was then dropped. Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend from Specialist Crime South said Mr Maroof's murder had a 'profound impact' on the young man's family, adding that the Met 'remains committed' to finding his killer. 'Imran's family and friends continue to live with the trauma,' she said. 'One year has passed since this senseless killing, and the Met remains committed to bringing those who killed Imran to justice. 'If you were in the vicinity of Plashet Park on the day of the stabbing or know anything that could help us, we need you to contact us.' Police have released a photo of the victim, with independent charity Crimestoppers offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information. Alexa Loukas, London regional manager for Crimestoppers, said: 'We know that some people may be reluctant or worried to speak directly to the police with information, which is why Crimestoppers is here. 'We are completely independent and guarantee you will remain 100% anonymous when you contact us. 'We offer a safe way for anyone to come forward and tell us what they know but not who they are. 'We are unable to identify any phone numbers or IP addresses if you are reporting online. 'Imran's family deserve answers, and we hope this reward will encourage someone to do the right thing and speak up with any information that may help the police.' Anyone with information is urged to call 101, quoting crime reference 6541/27JUL. Alternatively, to remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Car used in ATM raid after burglars ransacked Herefordshire home

BURGLARS ransacked a Herefordshire home, with a car stolen from it used to raid a service station. The offenders gained entry to the home in Pomona Lane, Weston Beggard, between 1.30pm and 3pm on Wednesday, July 23, by smashing the glass in the front door. Police community support officer Rachael Mahoney said they then ransacked several rooms, causing damage, and stole the keys to a vehicle parked outside the property, which they then made off with. The stolen vehicle was used the next day in a raid at a service station in Strensham, Worcestershire, where an ATM cash machine was forcibly removed and loaded into a van by the offenders, PCSO Mahoney said. ALSO READ: In the dock: latest cases from the magistrates' court Burglar stole thousands of pounds of tech from city shop Three arrested as police raid homes Police have confirmed that two cash machines were stolen from Strensham Services in the early hours of Thursday, July 24. Around six to eight suspects using three vehicles were involved in the theft from the M5 service station between junctions 7 and 8 at around 4am, a police spokesperson said. A dark coloured van, pick-up truck and a car were all involved as offenders smashed windows and used cables from the pick-up to strap around the machines and pull them away before loading them into the van. They then exited the services the wrong way out of a service road to flee the scene. Officers believe there would have been lorry drivers around at the time who may have witnessed the theft or captured it on their dashcams, and they would like to hear from them, or anyone else with information. Detective Constable Simon Dudman of Worcester CID said: 'This was a well-planned criminal operation that unfortunately resulted in two cash machines being stolen from the services. 'The smashing of windows and pulling the machines away with cables which sparked along the ground as they moved will no doubt have alerted witnesses to the incident, even at 4am in the morning. Anyone who witnessed the theft should call Worcester CID office on 01905 331234 quoting incident 42i of 24 July. Alternatively, if you have information but don't feel comfortable speaking to police, you can speak to the independent charity Crimestoppers.
