Apple announces Accessibility Nutrition Labels on App Store, Braille Access, and more new accessibility features coming to iPhone, Mac, and other devices later this year

Time of India13-05-2025

Apple
announced a suite of new accessibility features Tuesday that will roll out across its device ecosystem later this year, including first-ever Accessibility Nutrition Labels for the App Store and a Magnifier app for Mac to help users with visual impairments.
The tech giant's announcement, made on the eve of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, includes innovative updates to Live Listen, Personal Voice, and visionOS, alongside entirely new features like Braille Access and
Accessibility Reader
that leverage Apple silicon and on-device machine learning.
"At Apple, accessibility is part of our DNA," said Apple CEO Tim Cook. "Making technology for everyone is a priority for all of us, and we're proud of the innovations we're sharing this year."
App Store gets Accessibility Nutrition Labels
Among the most significant updates is the introduction of Accessibility Nutrition Labels on App Store product pages, providing detailed information about an app's accessibility features before download. These labels will highlight support for features like VoiceOver, Voice Control, Larger Text, and captions, giving users with disabilities more confidence in their app purchases.
Eric Bridges, president and CEO of the American Foundation for the Blind, called the labels "a huge step forward for accessibility," noting that "consumers deserve to know if a product or service will be accessible to them from the very start."
New tools for visual and hearing accessibility
Apple is bringing its Magnifier app to Mac, connecting to cameras so users with low vision can zoom in on surroundings like screens or whiteboards. The app supports multiple live session windows for multitasking and customizable views for adjusting brightness, contrast, and color filters.
For deaf and hard-of-hearing users, Live Listen controls and real-time Live Captions are coming to Apple Watch, allowing the watch to serve as a remote control for listening sessions. Personal Voice is becoming faster and more natural-sounding, requiring only 10 recorded phrases and less than a minute to create a voice, and will add support for Mexican Spanish.
Braille Access and system-wide Reading Mode
The new Braille Access feature will transform Apple devices into full-featured braille note takers, allowing users to open any app by typing with Braille Screen Input or a connected braille device. Users can take notes in braille format, perform calculations using Nemeth Braille, and open Braille Ready Format files directly.
Accessibility Reader introduces a system-wide reading mode that makes text easier to read for users with dyslexia or low vision. Available across Apple's ecosystem, it offers extensive customization options for font, color, and spacing, with support for Spoken Content.
Apple is also enhancing visionOS accessibility with updates to Zoom that let users magnify everything in view using Apple Vision Pro's main camera, and Live Recognition will use on-device machine learning to describe surroundings and read documents.
The company is celebrating Global Accessibility Awareness Day with dedicated retail displays, special Today at Apple sessions, and curated content across Apple Music, Apple TV+, Books, Podcasts, and the App Store.

Apple gives Tata India iPhone repair business as partnership expands, sources say

Apple has brought in Tata Group to handle repairs for iPhones and MacBook devices in its fast-growing Indian market, signalling the Indian conglomerate's deepening role in the U.S. tech giant's supply chain, two people familiar with the matter said. As Apple looks beyond China for manufacturing, Tata has fast emerged as its key supplier and already assembles iPhones for local and foreign markets at three facilities in south India, with one of them also making some iPhone components. In its latest partnership expansion, Tata is taking over the mandate from an Indian unit of Taiwan's Wistron, ICT Service Management Solutions, and will carry out such after-sales repairs from its Karnataka iPhone assembly campus, both sources said. The market for repairs is only going to boom in India, the world's second-biggest smartphone market, as iPhone sales skyrocket. Counterpoint Research estimates around 11 million iPhones were sold in India last year, giving Apple a 7 per cent market share, compared to just 1 per cent in 2020. The latest contract award signals Apple's growing confidence on Tata as it hopes to win more business from the world's most valuable smartphone company. "Tata's deepening partnership with Apple could also pave the groundwork for Apple directly selling refurbished devices in India, like how it does in the United States currently," said Prabhu Ram, a vice president at Cybermedia Research. The takeover from ICT by Tata is currently ongoing, both sources said, who declined to be named as they were not authorized to speak on the matter. Apple and Wistron did not respond to requests for comment, while a spokesperson for Tata declined to comment. While Apple's official service centres across India can do basic repairs, they would now ship phones and laptops to Tata's facility for more complex issues. Wistron's ICT however will continue to service other clients excluding Apple, one of the sources said. Amid an impending threat of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on China, India is also emerging as a favoured destination for iPhone exports. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said the bulk of iPhones sold in the United States during June quarter will be made at factories in India.

Apple inks 10-yr Rs 17.4 lakh/month retail deal in Borivali's Sky City Mall

Apple India has secured a premium commercial lease for a retail unit at Sky City Mall, Borivali East, Mumbai, marking a significant addition to its offline footprint in the city. According to property registration documents accessed by CRE Matrix, a data-driven real estate firm, the company has leased the unit for 10 years and 10 months with a monthly rent of Rs 17.35 lakh and a security deposit of over Rs 1.04 crore. The lease agreement was officially registered on May 28, 2025, and covers a carpet area of 12,616 sq. ft., including five car parkings. The starting rent per sq. ft. is set at Rs 138 per square feet, with rent escalation fixed at 15% every three years. Apple will benefit from a 10-month rent-free period, after which the rent will commence. Notably, the lock-in period spans the entire lease duration for the licensor, while the licensee (Apple) has a lock-in of 6 years and 6 months. The agreement also includes a revenue share clause, with Apple committing to share 2% of quarterly revenue for the first 42 months, which will increase to 2.5% thereafter. Additionally, Common Area Maintenance (CAM) charges have been set at ₹75 per sq. ft. "From flagship stores in BKC and Saket to now leasing at ₹138 per sq. ft. in Borivali's Sky City Mall, Apple's retail strategy in India is clearly evolving. This ₹17 lakh-a-month lease with a ₹1 crore-plus deposit shows that the brand sees value not just in prestige locations, but in high-potential suburban hubs. As real estate data analysts, we view this as a turning point—global brands are starting to chase footfalls and formats over just pin codes," said Abhishek Kiran Gupta, CEO & Co-founder, CRE Matrix. Sky City Mall, located off the Western Express Highway in Borivali East, is a strategic commercial hub with excellent metro and road connectivity. Apple's move to expand in this suburban hotspot underscores its commitment to tapping into growing retail demand in India's financial capital. This is Apple's India fourth store in the country. Earlier this year, Apple had leased an office spread over 6,526 sq ft in Mumbai's business district Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) through a lease at monthly rentals of Rs 738 per sq ft. According to the documents, Apple India Private Limited, the Indian arm of US-based multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California, has leased the commercial space in a building named Maker Maxity-5 for five to the documents, Agni Commex LLP (the landlord) leased the space for Rs 48.19 lakh per month and Apple India paid a deposit of Rs 4.33 crore.
