Binghamton Police Department awards ceremony
BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – Binghamton Police held a recognition ceremony this morning, reflecting on the department's work to keep the public safe.
This morning was the Binghamton Police Awards at the Holiday Inn.
It's a chance for the department to honor its officers' courageous, outstanding, and professional acts of service.
Such as recognizing Investigative Analyst Stacey Rodzinka.
She was leading force that helped identify a suspect in the arson case that resulted in the death of Binghamton firefighter John JR Gaudet.
Another certificate of recognition was given to patrolman Nathan Burgo, who helped track down and safely bring in an armed suspect during bar closing hours in August of last year.
'I saw two people arguing, I look over and one male was reaching towards his waistband and pulls out a gun, fires two shots North down State Street, and takes off running. I was on foot, and I knew we had other officers in the area in vehicles. So, I knew they were going to be able to get their fast or even get ahead of him to stop him,' says Burgo.
Also recognized were members of the Special Investigation Unit Task who says, through its 248 investigations, it removed 95 illegal firearms from the streets and recovered hundreds of ounces of illegal drugs.
The ceremony ended with a surprise recognition for Father Laurence Lord, who's been the police department's chaplain for 52 years.

Stepped up patrols in Binghamton ahead of summer
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – As we head into the summer months, community members can expect to see an increase in police presence in the City of Binghamton. On Tuesday, Mayor Jared Kraham announced that the Binghamton Police Department is increasing traffic patrols in order to reduce speeding and violations. Kraham released the following statement: 'I've heard from a growing number of residents concerned about drivers going too fast through their neighborhoods or running stop signs, putting others at risk. Binghamton Police will be cracking down on speeding and other traffic violations over the coming weeks, with extra patrols focused on reducing the number of drivers who break the law and make our neighborhoods less safe. Alongside foot and bike patrols and other community policing initiatives, this increased traffic enforcement is part of our broader effort to improve neighborhood safety across Binghamton.' During the initiative, Binghamton Police will focus on high traffic areas, giving special attention to school zones, City park zones, and hospital zones. Officers will also use a portable speed trailer, which displays drivers' speed as they pass, to help reduce speeding. Binghamton firefighters rescue dog from river island
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A golden retriever is safe at home with her family after being rescued from an island in the Susquehanna River. Members of the Binghamton Fire Department gave Winnie a boat ride to shore on Thursday afternoon. On Wednesday morning at about 11:30, a member of the Hatala family was preparing to take the 3-year-old English cream golden retriever for a walk when the dog spotted some Canadian geese and chased after them, crossing their invisible fence. The Hatala's launched a full-scale search near their home on Binghamton's Westside and received reports that Winnie was spotted swimming in the river. After the dog spent Wednesday night on an island in the river, a Binghamton Police drone was able to locate Winnie, and firefighters launched their rescue craft. Winnie and the Hatala family were overjoyed by the reunion, with Winnie wagging her tail before curling up for a long nap. The Hatala's say they plan to take Winnie to visit the fire station with a thank you gift in the near future.
