Binghamton firefighters rescue dog from river island

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A golden retriever is safe at home with her family after being rescued from an island in the Susquehanna River. Members of the Binghamton Fire Department gave Winnie a boat ride to shore on Thursday afternoon. On Wednesday morning at about 11:30, a member of the Hatala family was preparing to take the 3-year-old English cream golden retriever for a walk when the dog spotted some Canadian geese and chased after them, crossing their invisible fence. The Hatala's launched a full-scale search near their home on Binghamton's Westside and received reports that Winnie was spotted swimming in the river. After the dog spent Wednesday night on an island in the river, a Binghamton Police drone was able to locate Winnie, and firefighters launched their rescue craft. Winnie and the Hatala family were overjoyed by the reunion, with Winnie wagging her tail before curling up for a long nap. The Hatala's say they plan to take Winnie to visit the fire station with a thank you gift in the near future. Binghamton police arrest suspect in assault, robbery case

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – One suspect has been arrested, with another still at large following an alleged robbery and assault in the City of Binghamton over the weekend. 27-year-old Hamail Waddell has been arrested for his alleged role in what Binghamton Police say was an assault and robbery at 73 Morgan Rd in Binghamton on Saturday, May 24. Police say the investigation began on Saturday morning at approximately 7 a.m. when BPD received a report of a male victim at Guthrie Lourdes Hospital with facial injuries resulting from a suspected assault. Through investigation, police believe the woman who lives at 73 Morgan Rd woke up to two men in her room, Waddell and 27-year-old Tahjae Napolean of Endicott. BPD says the two assaulted the victim with a glass object and took property from the victim. Waddell is said to be the ex-boyfriend of the woman who lives there, and had an active Order of Protection against Waddell by the Broome County family court. Later that day, at around 2:40 p.m., Binghamton detectives located Waddell at 16 Jerome Ave, attempted to take him in, which allegedly was met with resistance. BPD says a responding officer assisting in the arrest broke several ribs in the attempt to arrest Waddell before he was apprehended. Waddell was notoriously arrested on New Year's Day 2023, which sparked protests and backlash against Binghamton Police after video of the incident appeared online due to an officer kneeling on Waddell's neck while Waddell was face down on the pavement, claiming that he couldn't breathe. Waddell received a conditional discharge for the arrest on New Year's Eve. Waddell was charged with: Robbery 1st Degree Burglary 1st Degree Burglary 2nd Degree Criminal Contempt 1st Degree Criminal Obstruction of Breathing The incident is still under investigation, and police are still looking for the second suspect, Tahjae Napolean. Binghamton Police Department awards ceremony

BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – Binghamton Police held a recognition ceremony this morning, reflecting on the department's work to keep the public safe. This morning was the Binghamton Police Awards at the Holiday Inn. It's a chance for the department to honor its officers' courageous, outstanding, and professional acts of service. Such as recognizing Investigative Analyst Stacey Rodzinka. She was leading force that helped identify a suspect in the arson case that resulted in the death of Binghamton firefighter John JR Gaudet. Another certificate of recognition was given to patrolman Nathan Burgo, who helped track down and safely bring in an armed suspect during bar closing hours in August of last year. 'I saw two people arguing, I look over and one male was reaching towards his waistband and pulls out a gun, fires two shots North down State Street, and takes off running. I was on foot, and I knew we had other officers in the area in vehicles. So, I knew they were going to be able to get their fast or even get ahead of him to stop him,' says Burgo. Also recognized were members of the Special Investigation Unit Task who says, through its 248 investigations, it removed 95 illegal firearms from the streets and recovered hundreds of ounces of illegal drugs. The ceremony ended with a surprise recognition for Father Laurence Lord, who's been the police department's chaplain for 52 years. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The man was taken to a local hospital and is currently listed as stable. Teen shot in Binghamton while driving, in stable condition

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – An 18-year-old is reportedly in stable condition after being shot while driving and subsequently involved in a car crash Sunday, Binghamton Police announced Monday. On April 20, just before 9 p.m., BPD responded to the intersection of Dewey Avenue and Overland Drive for reported shots fired. Officers say a car crashed at the intersection of Dewey Avenue and Felters Road. A bit later, officers responded to a call for a male suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers located the 18-year-old who was shot in the arm. The ensuing investigation ultimately determined the teen was driving the car that was shot at on Dewey Avenue. Officers at the scene of the shooting located 13 9-millimeter shell casings around Building 1 at 60 Saratoga Avenue. Officers also found a Derya Arms 9mm handgun and a 30-round extended magazine at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
