The best of land and sea at Espresso

Bangkok Post4 days ago
Espress at InterContinental Bangkok becomes a playground for beef buffs and seafood connoisseurs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, during which the Premium Seafood Dinner Buffet with a special addition of Australian wagyu beef are served. The latter is a time-limited add-on, available until the end of August, to the already sumptuous and expansive dinner buffet that Espresso is known for.
Located on the mezzanine level of InterContinental Bangkok, the weekend dinner buffet at Espresso is an indulgent one indeed, as you'll be spoilt for choice with many delicacies from various cuisines to savour. With the two highlights being seafood and Australian beef, you can technically enjoy all the surf and turf you want.
There's a corner behind a stylish partition, perfect for those who want semi-privacy. Alternatively, you can find a table near the glass railing to overlook the beautiful lobby below, while being serenaded by a live jazz band from 6.30-9.30 pm on Friday and Saturday.
Various counters and stations can easily increase your appetite, but none may be more so than the seafood on ice display, which showcases fresh fruits of the sea and DIY caviar sets. The catches come from far and wide, from Irish and Fine de Claire oysters, Chilean king crab legs, New Zealand green mussels, Canadian lobsters, Swimmer blue crab claws and more. Dig around and you may find a lobster claw that's bigger than your phone. Assemble a caviar tasting set by yourself with a selection of salty and savoury pearls, including Avruga, ikura and lumpfish roes. Of course, the Thai-style seafood dipping sauce is on standby to add zest to any seafood.
More savoury seafood awaits at the BBQ station, which serves Marinated tuna steak, perfectly grilled Grouper with dill crème sauce and succulent Rock lobster with seafood sauce. On the freshwater front, don't miss out on Goong Ta khrai. The aromatic Thai-style roasted river prawn is enhanced with garlic, lemongrass and turmeric.
From the Chinese BBQ station, Chinese favourites like Peking duck, Crispy pork belly and BBQ pork are available next to delicious dim sum. The good news is that Peking duck comes neatly wrapped for you.
More Asian delights await at the Indian corner, where pre-cooked dishes can be enjoyed with naan bread or jeera bhaat. Of course, Japanophiles should check out the tempura, sushi and sashimi selection, which includes Aussie beef nigiri topped with tobiko, at the Japanese food station.
More importantly, pair your seafood with time-limited premium Australian beef for a truly indulgent dinner, and you have many choices to choose from. Combine the best of land and sea, if you will. Espresso's grill station serves a rotation of MBS (Marble Beef Score) 8-9 wagyu topside beef from Margaret River and the famed Sir Harry's MBS 6-7 citrus-fed rump cut. The latter deserves a special mention for its combo of succulence and mouth-watering aroma. Meanwhile the carvery features a rotation of the 200-day dry-aged MBS 4-5 Ebony Prime Grain Fed Ribeye and tomahawk steaks.
The Aussie beef is also presented in the form of pre-cooked dishes — red wine-braised brisket, beef massaman curry, crying tiger grilled beef, to name but a few — that you can help yourself to while waiting for your cook-to-order succulent beef steaks or lamb chops to be served at your table.
Save some room for desserts for a sweet (and decadent) end to your meal. The selection of Thai desserts alone is quite expansive. You can go for crowd-pleaser Thai mango with sticky rice or something less known like Pumpkin custard or Thai gocchi in coconut milk. Or enjoy made-to-order Crepe suzette or bathe fresh seasonal fruits with a chocolate fountain.
The Premium Seafood Dinner Buffet at Espresso is available every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6pm-10.30pm with the addition of Australian wagyu beef available until the end of August. It's priced at B2,250++ per person and B1,200++ per child. Email InterContinental Bangkok at dining.bkkhb@ihg.com, call 02-656-0444 or visit bangkok.intercontinental.com to book a table. Don't forget to bring a big appetite.

Work on river tunnel for Purple Line extension begins

Tunnelling under the Chao Phraya River as part of the southern extension of the MRT Purple Line has begun and is slated for completion in May next year, according to Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit. It is the second such tunnel under the river and marks significant progress in expanding Bangkok's mass transit infrastructure. Mr Suriya said construction work is already 60% complete, ahead of schedule. The section connecting Tao Poon and the National Library is expected to be operational by 2028, with full services across the entire route slated for 2030. The Purple Line's southern extension route spans 23.6 kilometres, stretching from Tao Pun to Rat Burana with 10 underground and seven elevated stations. It will integrate with the existing MRT Blue Line and Purple Line at the Tao Poon interchange, enhancing connectivity across the capital. He said the ministry has put heavy emphasis on safety during construction. The Rail Transport Department and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) have been directed to strictly follow safety protocols, manage traffic effectively, and implement flood prevention measures at construction sites. He said that environmental impacts are being closely monitored, with efforts underway to control dust and maintain air quality around the area. On the government's 20-baht flat fare policy for electric train rides, Mr Suriya said public registration for the scheme will open on Aug 25 via the "Tang Rat" mobile application. Starting on Oct 1, passengers will pay no more than 20 baht per trip on any of the eight electric train lines which operate in Bangkok and surrounding areas. The number of passengers is expected to increase to 250,000 per day, from the current 150,000. In June, the cabinet approved a flat-rate fare of 20 baht for all eight electric train lines in Bangkok available exclusively to Thai nationals.

TAT sees hope in winter flight prospects

The 1-million target set for the Middle East and African markets this year remains challenging due to geopolitical conflicts, but Thailand still has opportunities from new flight openings this winter, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Hatsanai Chaisri, marketing manager for the Middle East and Africa at TAT's Dubai office, said growth in the Middle East market has been slow, particularly among family groups and first-time visitors. They are hesitant to travel abroad due to geopolitical uncertainty in the region, as well as the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, which took place in June, even though it ended with a ceasefire, said Mr Hatsanai. He said the agency expects travel momentum to rebound in August, which aligns with the school break for summer -- a high season for the market. TAT Dubai is responsible for marketing in 13 Middle East and nine African markets, mostly in North Africa, along with South Africa. Prior to the 12-day war, arrivals from the market had strongly increased since the beginning of the year, but growth has weakened with a year-on-year increase of roughly 2%. As of July 27, the markets under the TAT Dubai office tallied 497,697, growing 2.22% year-on-year. To achieve the 1-million target set for the TAT's Dubai office, it must secure at least 11% growth year-on-year in 2025, he said. Key drivers include Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, which are expected to generate 243,000, 181,000 and 118,030 arrivals, respectively, this year. Mr Hatsanai said a strong flight recovery of over 95% compared to the level recorded prior to the pandemic could also be a crucial factor. Currently, 11 airlines operate direct flights between the region and Thailand, serving roughly 231 flights per week and 288,380 seats per month. There are three new flights scheduled for this winter, namely Abu Dhabi-Krabi and Abu Dhabi-Chiang Mai via Etihad, and Sharjah-Krabi via Air Arabia. Typically, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market accounts for 70% of overall arrivals from the region each year, said Mr Hatsanai. Major segments are families and millennials, with high average spending of 9,600 baht a day or more than 100,000 baht a trip. They mostly choose five-star or luxury hotels and enjoy shopping, beaches and nature, as well as health and medical tourism. A decisive factor is halal-friendly trips offering halal food, prayer facilities and exclusive programmes or privacy options, such as private pool villas and VIP airport transfers, he said. As the outbound market among GCC countries is forecast to grow by 7% annually over the next five years, tourism operators are urged to adapt to changing behaviour. They have started using AI to plan their trips and are gravitating towards sustainable travel. Providing content and advertisements in Arabic is recommended for Thai operators, as they have higher click-through rates than English. Next month, the TAT will host the Middle East Trade Meet in Bangkok and Koh Samui, and organise a luxury roadshow to Kuwait and Bahrain in November. Next year, one of its flagship projects is Wellness Escapes in Amazing Thailand, targeting the Saudi Arabia and Oman markets in particular. Opportunities in other markets include Morocco, with a population of over 38 million. Arrivals surged after visa requirements were lifted for this market last year. A large portion of them are honeymooners. However, growth in some countries remains challenging due to sluggish economies and devalued currencies, such as Iran and Egypt.

Galaxy Resorts calls for luxury strategy to maximise growth

As Thailand has already passed its tourism peak of 40 million tourists, the country requires luxury marketing and new public-private partnership investment in luxury tourism that targets the growing number of affluent travellers from Asia-Pacific in order to maximise growth, says Galaxy Resorts Thailand. It also said the delay of the entertainment complex bill would make Thailand lose competitiveness with other Asian and the Middle Eastern countries. "The battleground for Asia-Pacific now is the premium and luxury sector," said Kevin Clayton, chief brand officer of Galaxy Resorts Thailand. According to the Pacific Asia Travel Association, Asia-Pacific tourism generated over 648 million regional trips last year, and it is expected to reach nearly 700 million and 800 million trips, respectively, this year and in 2027. Mr Clayton said Thailand is at the centre of the major growth and could benefit from the growing middle class in the region, such as those of India and China. There were over 6.2 million affluent people and 168 million upper middle class people in China who are fuelling luxury consumption overseas and are opting for trips within the region. He said although Bangkok is competing at the forefront as one of the top most visited cities worldwide along with London and Istanbul, driven by increasing air capacity, overall Thailand is highly unlikely to gain 35 million foreign arrivals this year. It is hampered by sluggish Chinese arrivals, with the unsafe perception of Thailand due to the border scam and the latest Thailand-Cambodia border skirmishes, which many countries have warned their citizens about. Mr Clayton said in the short run, Thailand needs to solve these unsafe narratives, including scams against tourists in the city, through promotion with global celebrities, key opinion leaders and influencers along with cracking down on these illegal operators, since safety is the top priority for affluent tourists. It should also upgrade the major Thai tourism website to be easier and more attractive for foreigners to search for information, in the same way that the Japan National Tourism Organization website is able to do. He added that luxury tourism operators should use integration to promote their services as consolidated offerings. Beyond that, Thailand should enhance public-private partnerships to build new infrastructure and attractions that offer unique experiences, including through integrated resorts. He said an integrated resort developer like Galaxy Entertainment Group can complement Thailand's existing strengths in hospitality, wellness, food and culture, with new thrilling attractions such as concerts and festival halls, arts exhibitions, along with premium gaming services. Given Thailand's entertainment complex bill remains on hold, Mr Clayton said Galaxy Resort remains patient. The company respects the government's decision and public discussion around the process, and continues its presence in the nation. Meanwhile, in Asia-Pacific, the integrated resorts industry continues to evolve. Developments include the additional phases of Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, UAE's first casino resort by Wynn in 2027, as well as Japan's MGM Osaka in 2030. Even emerging destinations such as Vietnam now have three major integrated resorts. By delaying the entertainment complex bill, Thailand is not competing effectively with these destinations, said Mr Clayton. "There is a lost opportunity for the country more than obviously the company that is investing [in it]," he said. For Galaxy Entertainment Group, its Galaxy Macau is slated to open a fourth phase with five new luxury hotels, retail and family attractions in 2027. Given that Macau's government reduced its national gross gaming revenue forecast this year by 5%, Mr Clayton said Galaxy is still positive about its business outlook since the company is targeting the premium gaming sector, not the mass market like some other resorts in Macau. Its gross gaming revenue market share in the second quarter exceeded 20.3% in Macau, he said. Macau last year welcomed nearly 35 million tourists, with 46% staying an average of 2.3 days, generating over US$23 billion gross gaming revenue and $9 billion non-gaming revenue.
