Harvard highlights Hyderabad Metro Rail's success story

The Hindu11-05-2025

Hyderabad Metro Rail project has received another prestigious recognition with the Harvard University publishing a research paper recognising it as one of the largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) metro rail projects in the world.
Harvard Business publication has published a case study done by the Indian School of Business (ISB) highlighting its achievements on how it overcame multiple challenges and hurdles plus the leadership of Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy in driving the project forward.
The research paper discusses how the ISB faculty explored the work under the theme, 'Hyderabad Metro – From Concept to Execution: The World's Largest Metro Rail Project under Public-Private Partnership.' It explains that in 2006, Mr. Reddy had proposed the metro rail project to address urban transportation challenges, adopting the PPP model to execute the world's largest PPP metro rail project.
The project faced innumerable challenges such as the initial Maytas failure, land acquisition issues, public protests, religious and heritage issues, political uncertainties, and financial hurdles. Yet, HMR emerged as a world-class infrastructure project.
The study emphasises the necessity of the metro in Hyderabad and how it has become a key transportation system and a model of infrastructure development through PPP methods, making it globally renowned. Effective leadership, planning and negotiations had helped overcome challenges such as land acquisition, government approvals, political pressures, and financial constraints.
The publication mentions that the project created a lasting impact due to its advanced technology and financial strategies. The research explores the question: How did Hyderabad Metro accomplish this? What lessons can be learned from handling the complexities of large-scale, multi-dimensional projects? The study aims to extract valuable insights from this experience.
It also stated that drawing lessons from the first phase, HMR team was prepared to face new challenges and take the second phase forward successfully. Earlier, prestigious international management institutions such as Stanford to had published research papers on the HMR success story, stated a press release on Sunday.

Centre plans speeding up MMDR amendments to boost critical mineral availability

India is expediting steps to boost domestic availability of critical minerals. Changes to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act are being fast-tracked. The move comes close on the heels of China putting curbs on supplies of permanent magnets derived out of rare earth elements (REEs). Besides regulatory tweaks, the centre is also expecting commercially viable domestic production of rare earth permanent magnets in small quantities later this year. Addressing a gathering of industry professionals and academicians during the critical minerals processing seminar, Union Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy said, 'The demand for critical minerals will increase four to six times by 2040. Global supply chains are concentrated in a few countries.' Referring to the ongoing concerns regarding supplies of Rare Earth magnets from China, Reddy said, 'Geopolitical tensions, trade restrictions, and increasing trend of resource nationalism can cause supply chain disruptions. India is currently almost 100% import dependent for critical minerals. We see this as a major challenge.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like War Thunder - Register now for free and play against over 75 Million real Players War Thunder Play Now The Minister said India recognises the pivotal role of these minerals in driving economic growth. Commenting on the way ahead, Mines Secretary, V L Kantha Rao said tweaks are underway to support domestic critical mineral ecosystems. 'We are planning to amend the (MMDR) act to support the critical mineral mission,' he said. Live Events Rao also said Indian research institutions have found solutions for producing rare earth magnets. 'This has enabled one of the companies in India to produce rare earth magnets in the next three-four months,' he said. The secretary was referring to government sanctioned funding for Midwest Advanced Materials Private Limited (MAM), Hyderabad. The Nonferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), a research and development (R&D) institution under the Mines Ministry , has also transferred advanced technology to MAM. These supports have paved the way for commercial production of Neodymium (NdFeB) materials and Rare Earth Permanent Magnets. Neodymium permanent magnets are vital for propulsion systems in electric vehicles and generators in renewable energy infrastructure.

Indiramma houses in G+3 buildings for poor in 16 slums across Hyderabad: Telangana Revenue Minister

Telangana government would construct Indiramma houses in ground-plus-three-storey buildings for the poor in 16 slums across Hyderabad. Similar course of action is being formulated for other districts. People were unwilling to shift to houses constructed on the outskirts of the State capital as they would lose livelihood. Considering this, a decision was taken to construct houses in the localities, said Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy. Besides Hyderabad, it would be implemented in Warangal, Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Karimnagar and other urban localities. Though 42,000 houses were constructed away from Hyderabad, only 19,000 chose to occupy them. Recent field level inspection revealed that only 13,000 are living there, said Mr. Reddy at a review meeting on the Indiramma Houses held on Friday (June 6, 2025). The focus of providing the houses shifted ti the poor in the urban localities after the scheme was streamlined in rural Telangana. Around 10.71 lakh applications for the houses were received from 150 divisions in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). It was learnt that around seven lakh were found to be eligible for the houses.
