Haatem shines with back-to-back Royal Ascot victories
Placed in the English and Irish Guineas last season, Richard Hannon's charge won the Jersey Stakes at this meeting 12 months ago, but was not seen in competitive action again until April.
Having finished fifth on his Sandown comeback and then fourth in a Listed event in France, Haatem (8-1) stepped up to a mile and a quarter and saw out the trip well to beat Galen by three-quarters of a length under James Doyle, with 4-1 favourite King's Gambit – like the winner carrying the Wathnan Racing colours – a strong-finishing third.
Hannon said of Haatem: 'He's pleased everyone all the way through his career, especially me.
'He's an amazing horse and a pleasure to be involved with, for old connections and new connections, and he's one of those horses that makes you remember why you train horses.
'What did he cost, 27,000 guineas? And the best thing about racing is you can find these horses and they then win these big races.
'He worked in the week and it was the best piece of work he's done all year and I thought 'is this the right thing to do, upping him in trip, maybe we should stick to a mile?'.
'James said he's loved it despite being a bit eager early and it's not out of the question we come back to a mile, but he will probably turn up in the Eclipse (would need to be supplemented) and I could see him running very well in that.'
The Wathnan team and retained rider Doyle completed a quickfire double in the concluding Copper Horse Stakes, with John and Thady Gosden's French Master flying home to delight favourite-backers.
Making his first outing since being bought by the Qatar-based owners and also sporting blinkers for the first time, the 5-2 market leader was nearer last than first at the top of the straight but was doing his best work at the finish and was two and a half lengths clear at the winning line.
The Gosdens were also completing a double following the spectacular earlier success of Field Of Gold in the St James's Palace Stakes.

'Let's see what happens' - Arsenal transfer hint dropped as Chloe Kelly speaks
Chloe Kelly spent the second half of last season on loan at Arsenal from Manchester City with the England Lionesses star's future still up in the air Chloe Kelly has refused to confirm that she has told Arsenal they are in prime position for her signature but the England winger looks likely to sign a permanent contract with the Champions League winners. Kelly spent the second half of last season on loan at Arsenal from Manchester City and helped them achieve memorable European success. The 27-year-old becomes a free agent at the end of this month and is believed to have given Arsenal a period of exclusivity in which to come up with a deal. Kelly is now in the England camp, preparing for the women's Euros and she said: 'I'm just allowing my representatives to do the work behind the scenes. My focus is solely on England. No matter whether it's done or not, my focus is solely on the tournament ahead. 'Arsenal took me from a really dark place and gave me an opportunity but we achieved incredible things together, so let's see what happens.' Kelly fell out of favour at City, making just one appearance last season but she scored twice and produced six assists in 13 appearances for Arsenal, the club where she started her senior career. And she clearly loved working with Renee Slegers, saying: 'She's just a great manager, I learnt so much on the pitch and off the pitch from her. 'She's a great person and to come away with a Champions League is incredible. She gave me belief and confidence and I will always be grateful for her.' And Kelly's resurgence at Arsenal earned her a place in Sarina Wiegman 's squad for the Euros and has put her in the perfect frame of mind for the tournament, which kicks off at the start of next month in Switzerland. Kelly went on: 'I'm very happy. It was incredible to win the Champions League. It was an incredible moment for English sport and English women's sport - and it's made us very excited for the Euros now. 'I feel like I've grown so much from being at Arsenal. Every day I was learning from a great manager in Renee and to be here now is an incredible honour. You never take for granted playing for your country, so I knew that I needed to get minutes and work hard to be able to be in this position.'

Man Utd can't complete deal for new target until final day of transfer window
Ruben Amorim and Manchester United are in line for a busy summer but the Premier League side may be forced to wait until the last minute to land one of their targets Manchester United will have to wait until transfer deadline day if they want to land midfield target Hicham Boudaoui. The Algerian international is the latest name to emerge as a potential solution to Ruben Amorim's midfield issues ahead of the new season. United boss Amorim has acted quickly to strengthen his front-line, with Matheus Cunha completing a £62.5million move from Wolves. Midfield remains a problem area, though, after a 15th-place finish in the Premier League. Casemiro's tough time in English football continued last term, while Amorim seems determined to use Kobbie Mainoo in a more advanced role and hasn't appeared eager to play Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte as a two. Alternatives are being eyed, and 25-year-old Boudaoui is among those to catch the eye. According to The Sun, United sent scouts to watch the midfielder in action for Algeria against Sweden. It was a game to forget for Boudaoui despite some positive flashes, though, with the visitors 4-0 down when he went off on the hour mark before pulling back three late goals. Boudaoui has two years left on his current deal with Nice, but has been tipped to leave this summer. Due to United's ownership situation, though, a move may have to wait. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is understood to be waiting until September before making any signings from Nice, who are also owned by Ineos. United and Nice were both involved in last season's Europa League, with a United move for Jean-Clair Todibo made impossible by the situation. 'They've said we can sell him to another Premiership club, but we can't sell to Manchester United. But that's not fair on the player and I don't see what that achieves," Ratcliffe told Bloomberg. Todibo eventually completed a season-long loan move to West Ham and has now joined the London side permanently. It remains to be seen whether the other European clubs reported to be keen on the midfielder decide to test the water before September. The Sun suggests a bid of around £20m could be enough to get a deal over the line. Nice finished last season in fourth place in Ligue 1, narrowly missing out on automatic qualification for the Champions League's league phase. They still have a chance to make it into the competition through the qualifying rounds, where they will need to come through two two-legged matches. United, in contrast, won't be in European competition of any kind next season. Their lowly Premier League finish meant the Europa League final offered their only hope, and they lost that against Tottenham in Bilbao.

Reaching High out of luck for the King and Queen in Ascot Stakes
A first horse trained by Willie Mullins to carry the royal colours, Reaching High was the 11-4 favourite in the hands of Ryan Moore – but while he looked full of running rounding the home turn, he was all dressed up with nowhere to go against the rail and when he did eventually get out it was all too late. Up front Henry de Bromhead's fellow Irish raider Ascending (20-1) knuckled down under Billy Lee in the concluding stages of the two-and-a-half-mile contest to beat Nurburgring, with the latter's trainer Joseph O'Brien also saddling the third and fourth home in Comfort Zone and Leinster. Mullins said: 'Ryan just said he got no run. He's finished full of running, but just got no luck in running, so it's disappointing. 'Their Majesties are very easy, lovely people to train for and it's a pleasure. There's a bit more pressure when you train one for them at this meeting, but to bring one here with a real chance is what we like to do. Hopefully this fellow will show us how good he is at some stage later in the season.' Mullins added: 'Poniros (17th) was probably a little too keen and had run his race before he got to the straight, so it's back to the drawing board with him.' As for the winner, De Bromhead explained the Ascot Stakes was not even his first choice. 'I'm delighted. I wanted to go for the mile and six (Copper Horse Stakes), I thought he had a great chance but he didn't get in so we ran in this one and now we've won – happy days,' said De Bromhead. 'He's just a star. He was bought to go hurdling and he ran very well over hurdles but he never really loved it, so we said we'd go back on the Flat. 'I think we'll stay on the Flat, he seems to love it so I think we should. 'Billy opted to go out and get a bit of light, the horse travelled beautifully and he gave him a super ride. He knew he had a kick so he used the kick a bit earlier than he had planned. 'It's amazing to win any of these races, we're fortunate enough to train good horses. We're very lucky.'
