Detroit artist paints everyday people to honor their stories, not their status

CBS Newsa day ago

A Detroit-based artist is on a mission to capture the soul of the city by painting the people who live in it.
Richard Wilson isn't focused on celebrities or influencers; he's painting everyday Detroiters, not because they're famous, but because he believes their lives and stories are worth remembering.
"It's quite niche," Wilson says of his work, "but I think those are the people we should be celebrating, treating as aristocracy, and having paintings of them in public spaces."
Originally from London, Wilson got his start as a graffiti artist. Over time, he shifted to murals, and his most well-known Detroit piece, "A Tribute to Stevie," graces the side of the Music Hall downtown.
But now, he's pivoting once again.
"I've moved away somewhat from the murals," Wilson says. "I'm keen to do the same kind of thing with people around us who are still with us, to have their legacy kept in this classical way."
That vision is what drives his latest project, a portrait series he's calling "Season One." It features Detroiters whose stories might otherwise go untold.
His most recent subject? Flint native and world-renowned muralist Hubert Massey, known for his large-scale fresco installations.
"For me, the narrative is Hubert," Wilson says. "It's not about me. I just want to celebrate Hubert."
Wilson has also painted Detroiters like Jantae' Spinks and her partner, owners of "Someday," an art gallery and bakehouse in the city's North End neighborhood. Spinks says the project is meaningful on a deep level.
"They don't get to see themselves that way," she says. "Especially everyday Black people in Detroit. So to take on that task of ennobling them and ushering them into a realm they might never have seen themselves in, it's kind of heavy."
Wilson hopes to continue the portrait project beyond this initial season. "I've got a list as long as your arm of this other person, this other person, who I'm going to be painting," he says.
His goal is simple: to show people they matter.
"I've never met kinder, lovelier people in the world," Wilson says of Detroit. "And I'm reasonably well-traveled."

Kim Cattrall Says She's ‘Really OK' If She's Only Remembered for Her ‘Sex and the City' Character

Kim Cattrall broke out playing the inimitable Samantha Jones on Sex and the City — and she's just fine if that remains her biggest credit to date. 'I created a fantastic character that I loved, and I put a lot of love in it,' Cattrall, 68, told The Times of London in a Thursday, June 12, profile. 'If I'm remembered only for that, then that's really OK.' SATC, based on author Candace Bushnell's newspaper column and novel of the same name, chronicles four 30-something best friends living in New York City while searching for love. In addition to Cattrall's Samantha, the main cast was rounded out by Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Kristin Davis (Charlotte York) and Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes). Despite SATC becoming a runaway, six-season hit, Cattrall initially turned down the role four times before having a change of heart. Kim Cattrall Believes the 'Biggest Challenge' for a Woman in Her 60s Is Staying 'Relevant' 'Self-inflicted ageism,' she quipped to The Times about her reasoning, noting she was 41 during the audition process. 'Well, that changed. 40 became sexy. It became, 'Man, let's have more of that.'' Cattrall also felt a pull toward the sex-positive publicist, even though it couldn't be further from her reality. 'She wasn't a nymphomaniac — well, some people might have thought she was — but she was just enjoying the main course,' Cattrall said. 'Everyone else was nibbling on the appetizers when she was going for the steak. And it was always on her terms — that I always insisted on.' She added, 'But, I'm the antithesis of [Samantha] in many ways. I'm a serial monogamist, and then some.' Kim Cattrall Believes the 'Biggest Challenge' for a Woman in Her 60s Is Staying 'Relevant' Cattrall has been married three times: to writer Larry Davis from 1977 to 1979, to architect Andreas Lyson from 1982 to 1989, and to musician Mark Levinson from 1998 to 2004. The actress is currently in a long-term relationship with Russell Thomas, who is 14 years her junior. 'He was an actor originally. He's had an incredibly interesting life and really done it on his terms. He's a bit of a rebel, which I love,' she added of her boyfriend. 'We've been together almost 10 years now, and we've had a blast. We've just had so much fun.' In addition to her 'fun' romance, Cattrall has continued acting. She had a blink-and-you-missed-it cameo on season 2 of SATC's And Just Like That spinoff, reuniting with Parker, 60, for a phone call. Onscreen, the former besties squashed a feud that erupted when Carrie fired Samantha as her publicist after COVID-19 pandemic setbacks. (It was previously speculated that Cattrall didn't sign on to the first season of AJLT due to a feud with Parker, who denied the claims.) Cattrall will next be heard in BBC's Central Intelligence radio series, narrating the program and portraying Eloise Page, a real CIA agent during World War II. 'In this age that we're living in right now, 'central intelligence' seems like a contradiction in terms,' she told The Times. '[Eloise] didn't have children, she was never married, her job was her life … And I think she was completely fulfilled and happy. That made her even more of a hero for me — in those times, especially.' Central Intelligence season 2 premieres Friday, June 20, on BBC Radio 4.

LeBron James puts ‘no bag' critics on blast

The post LeBron James puts 'no bag' critics on blast appeared first on ClutchPoints. Unquestionably, LeBron James is one of the greatest ever to pick up a basketball. Despite Michael Jordan's agent calling James out on championships won, his record nonetheless speaks for itself. Advertisement In addition to his four NBA titles, James is the all-time leading scorer in NBA history, a four-time MVP, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, and, approaching age 40, still one of the top players in the game. For all that, James still continuously gets derailed on social media. As a result, he took time out to call out those critics who claim he has 'no bag,' per Hoops Hype. On the latest episode of his Mind the Game podcast with Steve Nash, James chastised the haters by pointing towards one statistic as a defense with Lakers teammate Luka Doncic sitting beside him. 'I'm sitting here with 50 billion points—leading scorer all-time in the NBA. No bag? That proves the point,' he said. James certainly is not one to back down from his critics, whether on the court or online. Last month, James blasted NBA legends about their critiques of the modern-day NBA. Advertisement He told Steve Nash that all the players and teams he grew up watching, he now looks at them through a different lens. 'But now, that generation talks so much s*** about the game today, it makes you go back and watch those old games — and it makes you not even want to appreciate them the way you did as a kid,' James said. Meanwhile, James could become an unrestricted free agent if he chooses to opt out of his contract with the Lakers. Whatever he decides to do, James is undoubtedly one of the first social media-driven athletes. LeBron James and his complicated relationship with social media From the moment he stepped on to the NBA floor in 2003, James has been a media darling and target and, on the one hand, praised for his talent, humility, philanthropy, and willingness to speak out on social issues. Advertisement On the other hand, reviled for accusations about infidelities, 'Courtside Karen' moments, and for being outspoken on matters of racial and social justice. Nevertheless, James has been one of the most social media-savvy athletes since the advent of social media. James has utilized his various platforms to establish his brand and promote his off-court ventures. At times, he has also used it to troll back whenever he deems it necessary. In all, James's attachment to social media is a mixed bag. Lakers' LeBron James teases retirement decision with cryptic social media post

The post Lakers' LeBron James teases retirement decision with cryptic social media post appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Lakers do not want to talk about it. Fans do not want to talk about it. And the NBA certainly does not want to talk about it, but LeBron James' retirement is a topic the world cannot avoid. When the 40-year-old officially concludes his all-time great professional basketball career, a surreal moment will sweep the globe. Advertisement The announcement will dictate news coverage for days, as people reflect on the legacy of possibly the most iconic athlete of the 21st Century. James himself knows this, and he is using that widespread intrigue to his advantage. The four-time NBA Finals MVP posted a clip on X from an upcoming advertisement that puts the spotlight directly on his eventual retirement. But everything might not be how it seems. 'Are the retirement rumors true? What's next,' a reporter asks James during a mock press conference. He then prepares to respond before the screen cuts to black. The NBA's all-time scoring king only stoked the flames with his caption. 'I've been asking myself the same question…' he teased. It is obviously possible that James reveals his official retirement date this offseason — it would not be the first time he went all out regarding a huge decision — but there are red flags all around. The ad hashtag is a major one. Misdirection is a cruel yet effective tactic that marketing departments have been known to break out. James can dangle his inevitable retirement in front of the masses, and they will bite. He did not become a billionaire without knowing how these things work. Advertisement However, there is always a sliver of a chance that the four-time regular season MVP and 13-time All-NBA First-Team selection hints at his future plans. He is expected to exercise his $52.6 million player option with the Lakers, but that would leave a huge cloud of uncertainty hanging above the 2026-27 campaign. In many ways, the timetable makes sense. Will next season be LeBron James' last hurrah One final season can give James another year on the court with his son and allow the Lakers to ease their transition into the Luka Doncic era (assuming the Slovenian superstar signs an extension). With a full offseason to prepare and a possibly upgraded roster, he can pursue a fifth title one last time. But there is one complicating factor that might disrupt such a vision: James is still performing at an exceptionally high level. The Akron, Ohio native posted 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 51.3 percent from the field and a respectable 37.6 percent from behind the 3-point line last seaosn. James does not look like someone who has logged 1,854 games in 22 seasons. He is still arguably one of the 10 best players in the game today. Advertisement When the public looks back on his career decades from now, that startling statement may just define the transcendent impact he had on the sport. His longevity will be studied. LeBron James is not done yet, though. He has left everyone on the hook, and now we have no choice but to wait for him to clarify his enigmatic post.
