Kane Cornes and Western Bulldogs ‘agree' on team defence issues after Brisbane defeat
The Bulldogs sit ninth on the AFL ladder and are effectively two wins outside the eight — provided, as expected, that Gold Coast beat the injury-ravaged Bombers in their rescheduled make-up game after Round 24 — after going down to premiership contenders Brisbane last Friday night.

The Dogs were opened up by the kick-happy Lions who, true to their well-documented modus operandi, dominated uncontested possession and uncontested marks.
Speaking after the game, both coach Luke Beveridge and star midfielder Tom Liberatore admitted team defence was their shortfall.
'That'll be the one that stands out for us with our team defence — we need to do it better,' Beveridge told reporters after Friday night's clash.
'It's just too hard to circumvent those scoring opportunities once they go into the middle, it just opens everything up.'
In similar language, Liberatore added: 'Just more team defence. Our team defence wasn't really good enough for what they try and do and how they move the ball.'
Cornes was earlier this year banned from the Bulldogs' changerooms and has a frosty, if at all existent, relationship with Beveridge due to his persistent criticism of the club.
The pair exchanged words in a heated moment before the Bulldogs' Round 11 clash with Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.
But Cornes is now singing the praises of Beveridge for finally recognising the glaring issue.
'A gallant effort by the Dogs, but the (lack of) team defence was the concession there from Luke Beveridge and also Libba,' Craig Hutchison said on The Agenda Setters on Monday night.
'It's been a claim they've been defending hard against your criticism all year, Kane, so do you feel a little bit vindicated that they're now conceding that's an issue in their game.'
Cornes responded: 'I'm thrilled that we agree, that's the main point there.
'So, to hear Luke Beveridge and Libba say that and acknowledge that's been a big issue, to be on the same page now, is awesome.
'It's sort of what I've been saying for three years; they've pushed back pretty hard on that, they've got pretty nasty at times when (they've) been asked about that question.
'I think the footy industry is now clearly acknowledging what I've been saying for three years.'
Asked by Caroline Wilson if the Dogs had 'paid enough attention to it' up until this point, Cornes was emphatic.
'Well, no! These numbers have been the mainstay of their problems for every year other than the years they've played in the grand finals and won the premiership under Luke Beveridge and he's refused to acknowledge it, he's got quite nasty about it,' he said.
'But I'm just sitting here and relaxed that we're now on the same page.'

The couple's relationship became the talk of the rugby league world last year after Mason split with fiancee Todd Liubinskas in 2023 and called off their wedding, just weeks before they were set to get married. The exact reason for the couple's split remains unclear and became a topic of much speculation among footy and media insiders, with the party line being that it was due to a breakdown in trust. Mason was first pictured on a date with Knight at The Butler restaurant in Sydney's Potts Point in February 2024 before the pair confirmed they were together on Instagram in July. Knight posted a loved-up snap of the pair embracing with the caption: 'My life's good.' Despite the distance that now separates them, the pair have remained together. And while it is undoubtedly hard to be away from his partner, Knight revealed his move to Hull has helped him rediscover his love for rugby league. Melbourne are reeling after coughing up a 46-point three-quarter time lead to lose to St Kilda on Sunday and Kane Cornes thinks it should cost coach Simon Goodwin his job. The Demons have been on a consistent downwards trajectory since Goodwin led them to their drought-breaking 2021 AFL premiership. Discussing the fallout on Monday night's episode of The Agenda Setters, Caroline Wilson said Sunday's result hallmarks of Carlton's devastating Round 1 loss to Richmond, but that the Demons should still stick with Goodwin, who is contracted until the end of next year. 'I was bullish on Simon Goodwin. I still reckon they'll stick with Simon Goodwin,' she said. St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt said more blame needs to fall on the players. 'I think there will be change in every aspect of the football club, (but) I'm less conclusive on the coaching aspect and more conclusive on the playing aspect,' he said. 'I'm not saying there won't be change — I think there will be change. But I'm not as strong as you because I think the playing group has a bit to answer for. 'I think the playing group gave the game away yesterday with some of the stuff that we saw. 'I'd be more aggressive with the list than I would be with the coaching department.' Ex-winger who was ‘too slow, too big' now a key man up front for Dogs
First he pounced on a Jason Saab fumble and bolted 12 metres to score the opener, then he crashed over from close range after an offload from Bulldogs fullback Connor Tracey. Yet Canterbury coach Cameron Ciraldo was more impressed with the tough carries and 27 tackles Hughes delivered during his 30 minutes than his tryscoring heroics. 'I thought his start to the game was really good, and his second stint,' Ciraldo said. 'He scored two tries and everyone sees that, but the stuff he's doing that front-rowers have to do, I thought he was brilliant at that.' Ciraldo said Hughes, who played all 25 games for Canterbury last season, was getting back to his best after undergoing ankle surgery earlier in the year. 'We missed him at the start of the year,' Ciraldo said. 'He had that syndesmosis injury and missed the first 12 weeks of the season. He was really good for us last year. 'He's just been building towards that. Last week it was hard to leave him out of the team … we wanted him to go back to NSW Cup and play big minutes. He went back and did that and totally deserved to come back into the team.' After the Bulldogs were knocked out in the opening round of the play-offs last year, they are on track for a top-two finish this season, and Hughes is confident they can do some damage in the finals. 'We're a different style of team, I reckon,' he said. 'We're real fit. We base our game [on] defence. You don't get picked in the team unless your defence is pretty good. So, yeah, we're a real defensive team, and I think that's what we'll need in those games.' It's a far cry from Hughes' debut season in 2023, when the Bulldogs won only seven games and finished third last. 'We got smashed [50-16] on my debut by the Bunnies on Anzac Day,' he recalled. 'That was one you don't want to really remember, but it was good, man. It was good to get out there [in the NRL].' Loading Hughes and NSW Origin representative Max King have formed a reliable front-row pairing for the Bulldogs that will be bolstered next season by the recruitment of Kiwi international Leo Thompson from Newcastle on a four-year deal. 'It's great competition,' Hughes said of Thompson's arrival. 'That's what we want. We want to beef up our middle pack. So it's great competition, man. It just pushes you to get better.'
