Nestle to tap into high quality coffee experiences

HONG KONG: Global food and drink company Nestle is doubling down on its coffee strategy in China, aiming to capture the growing appetite for diverse and high-quality coffee experiences among Chinese consumers.
Jiang Haiying, senior vice-president of Nestle Greater China Region and head of the coffee business unit, said the growth potential of the Chinese market has 'strengthened our commitment to accelerate our coffee business in China'.
Jiang said that the company's Asia, Oceania and Africa region holds high expectations for its performance in China, expressing confidence that the market will continue to deliver sustained growth.
She said that Nestle Coffee will pursue 'bigger, fewer and better and more focused innovation projects', targeting cutting-edge trends in Chinese consumer behavior and coffee consumption to drive the next wave of expansion.
According to Nestle's 2025 first-quarter results report released on April 24, the company's global coffee business achieved growth of 5.1% year-on-year.
Data from the China Coffee Industry Report 2024, jointly released by the World Federation of Chinese Catering Industry, show that although China's coffee exports hit a record low of 20,000 tonnes in 2023, imports grew by over 20%, reflecting surging domestic demand.
Coffee consumption in China has jumped 167% over the past decade, reaching 350,000 tonnes. The market has shifted from being dominated by instant coffee to a more diversified landscape, with freshly brewed coffee and retail coffee emerging as core segments.
Research institute Mintel Group forecasts that the retail value of instant coffee will reach 12.47 billion yuan in 2023, up 5% year-on-year, and grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.3% to reach 16.9 billion yuan by 2028. — China Daily/ANN

Lee's office said the new leader had told Xi he hoped the two countries 'would actively promote exchanges and cooperation in a wide range of fields – including the economy, security, culture and people-to-people exchanges'. Lee also invited Xi to attend the upcoming Apec summit in November, which is being held in Korea's southern city of Gyeongju. Lee said he hoped there would be a chance for 'in-depth discussions on bilateral ties and regional issues.' Lee also asked that China play a 'constructive role in promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,' in a reference to Beijing's ties with North Korea. Seoul has long trod a fine line between top trading partner China and defence guarantor the United States. Relations suffered under Lee's predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol, who cleaved close to the United States and sought to improve ties with former colonial master Japan. But both countries' export-driven economies have now found themselves in the crosshairs of the US tariff blitz. And Lee hinted on the campaign trail that he would seek to improve ties with Beijing. He has also raised alarm by saying that a future conflict between China and Taiwan would not be South Korea's concern. — AFP

• The Logistics Real Estate Market on the Chinese Mainland Shows Signs of Stabilization Amid Ongoing Consumer and Industrial Demand HONG KONG SAR - Media OutReach Newswire - 10 June 2025 - Cushman & Wakefield (NYSE: CWK) has published its inaugural global logistics and industrial outlook, ' Waypoint 2025 ', which highlights a significant shift in the sector as global supply chains are reconfigured and cost pressures evolve. Drawing on insights from more than 120 markets worldwide, the report shows that in the near term, the balance of power is tilting towards landlords, with wide-reaching implications for occupiers, investors, and developers. The research reveals that globally, the proportion of tenant-favourable markets is expected to fall sharply from 52% today to just 28% by 2028. This change is being driven by constrained supply, robust demand, and rising costs across key inputs such as rent, labour, construction materials, and electricity. At the same time, landlord-favourable markets are forecast to rise from 24% to 35%, signalling a more competitive leasing environment in the years ahead for occupiers. In Asia Pacific (APAC), fundamentals remain strong but market conditions are becoming more nuanced. The region currently offers more balanced conditions, with 24% favouring landlords and 33% favouring tenants. Over the next three years, markets in the region are expected to move away from a balanced, neutral position toward more polarising tenant- and landlord-favourable market conditions. Neutral markets are expected to decline to 29% from the current 42%, while tenant-friendly markets are anticipated to grow to 38% from 33%. Similarly, landlord-favourable markets are expected to rise to 33%, up from 24%. Dr. Dominic Brown, Head of International Research at Cushman & Wakefield said, 'Asia Pacific markets are diverging, with Australia and Southeast Asia seeing a shift towards landlord-favourable conditions, while other parts of the region face rising vacancies and tenant-friendly dynamics. Nevertheless, 62% of APAC markets still expect rental growth in the next three years, driven by robust occupier demand, strategic manufacturing shifts and the region's cost competitiveness in labour and energy.' In terms of labour costs, APAC remains highly competitive, with countries like India, Vietnam, Philippines, and Indonesia having significantly lower wages. China has moved toward higher value-added manufacturing, with wages around 50% of the global average. Another highlight of the report is that general manufacturing, retail distribution and e-commerce distribution are the top three key drivers of demand for logistics and industrial space in Asia Pacific. This is very much aligned to what is being seen across the world. High-tech and automotive manufacturing have also been identified as drivers of occupier demand in APAC over the next three years. Dennis Yeo, Head of Investor Services and Logistics & Industrial, APAC, Cushman & Wakefield said: 'Asia Pacific continues to demonstrate resilience, with markets such as India and Vietnam seeing sustained occupier demand. However, rising vacancy in some subregions, driven by a surge in new supply means that a one-size-fits-all approach no longer works. Businesses must adopt granular, market-specific strategies that account for local cost structures, infrastructure readiness, and automation potential.' The logistics market on the Chinese mainland continued its path to stabilization and recovery in 2024, underpinned by favourable structural drivers. Key catalysts include the emergence of industrial clustering, the acceleration of new logistics productivity, and a more balanced supply-demand environment, all of which are reinforcing the market's long-term fundamentals. In the consumer segment, the rapid rise of new e-commerce formats — notably live-streaming commerce and instant retail — has been instrumental in driving online consumption. Combined with the effective rollout of consumer goods trade-in policies, these trends have led to sustained growth in online retail sales of physical goods, bolstering demand for high-quality logistics infrastructure. On the industrial front, strong logistics demand for industrial goods has been observed, supported by continued manufacturing activity and supply chain modernization. This dual-sector momentum — consumer and industrial — is injecting fresh vitality into the premium logistics warehouse market, reinforcing its status as a core asset class in the evolving logistics ecosystem on the Chinese mainland. MANY consumers are now looking for the best prices when eating out or buying raw cooking ingredients. Like many average families living in the Johor Baru district, M. Pathmawathy from Taman Nusa Bestari said eating out was becoming costlier. 'My husband and I go around comparing prices before buying essential items, and go for the best deals,'' she said. Her family now eats out once a week unlike previously when they dined out thrice a week. 'It costs three of us – my husband, child and me – about RM100 to eat out compared with RM80 to RM90 before,'' said Pathmawathy. Pathmawathy compares prices before buying essentials. The 40-year-old housewife said that although her husband worked in Singapore, she was still prudent when it came to managing household expenses. She said an average of RM250 was spent every two weeks on vegetables, fish and meat, and RM400 monthly for basic items. Salesperson Azalia Hasnah Najwa, 22, said prices of meals had yet to increase following the May 1 ban on eateries and hawkers using household subsidised gas cylinders. 'It is still too early to see the impact from the new regulation. 'Consumers may have to wait another month or two,' she said. Azalia, who is from Taman Perling, said she spent about RM15 on lunch at her workplace or sometimes brought food from home. Azalia says eating out in Johor Baru has always been costly. She said eating out in Johor Baru had always been costly, even before the ban. 'My family seldom eat out as most of the time, dinners are prepared by our mother,'' she said. Azalia said although there was a wet market in Taman Perling, her mother saved money by doing her weekly marketing for just RM300 at a hypermarket in Taman Tampoi Utama about 6.5km away. 'Goods there are cheaper, and of a larger variety than in the wet market,'' she added. On the other hand, digital marketing specialist Marcus Tan, 33, said he and his wife, who works as a customer service executive, only eat at home on weekends. Tan says his monthly food bill is RM1,200 for two. For them, eating out on weekdays was much easier than having to prepare meals from scratch after coming back home from work. 'Dining out gives us the flexibility of choosing what we want to eat,'' said Tan, pointing out that they could have Chinese, Malay, Indian, Western or Thai food every other day. He said their monthly food bill, including weekend homecooked meals, was RM1,200, which is an amount he considers reasonable for two.
