EGA and Ministry of Education announce winners of this year's EGA Aluminium Design and Innovation Challenge
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the biggest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, today announced the winners of the EGA Aluminium Design and Innovation Challenge, run in partnership with the Ministry of Education. The challenge aims to inspire school students' interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The winning teams were recognised by His Excellency Omar Al Dhaheri, Assistant Undersecretary for the School Operations Sector (Abu Dhabi) at the Ministry of Education, and Khalid Essa Buhumaid, Senior Vice President, Government Relations at Emirates Global Aluminium, at a ceremony held at EGA's site in Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi.
The EGA Aluminium Design and Innovation Challenge is part of EGA's Engineer the Future programme, which seeks to encourage school children to study and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. So far this academic year, EGA's Engineer the Future has engaged over 6,950 school students, including more than 4,000 female students.
EGA is a major employer of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics professionals, with over 1,500 people working in these fields at the company, including more than 500 UAE nationals.
The design challenge engages students from grades nine to 12 to creatively use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills to address real-life challenges with aluminium. Over the course of four weeks, students were mentored by EGA engineers and provided with the necessary resources and tools to complete their projects.
Over 300 teams from schools across the UAE participated in the EGA Aluminium Design and Innovation Challenge this year, compared to 163 in 2024. The 63 shortlisted teams were invited to creatively design an innovative project using aluminium in one of the challenge categories – architecture, product design, sustainable mobility, and space solutions.
This year's first-place winning teams in each category are Fatima Al Zahraa School in the category of architecture, Nahel School in the category of product design, Dubai National School – Barsha in the category of space solutions, and Jameela Buheired School in the category of sustainable mobility.
His Excellency Omar Al Dhaheri,Assistant Undersecretary for School Operations Sector (Abu Dhabi) at the Ministry of Education, extended his congratulations to the competition winners. He praised the leading-edge partnership with EGA and its vital role in developing students' practical skills to achieve the UAE's aspirations across vital sectors that require building national cadres with a high level of capability, excellence, and innovation.
His Excellency added: 'Through its various programmes and collaborations with organisations in the public and private sectors, the Ministry of Education proactively works to create opportunities for students to showcase their innovation capabilities and put their acquired knowledge and skills into practice through tangible, real-world projects that offer significant value to society.'
Khalid Essa Buhumaid, Senior Vice President of Government Relations at Emirates Global Aluminium, said: 'Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are all essential for the UAE's achievement of Operation 300bn, the national industrial growth strategy. EGA aims to grow the future national industrial workforce of the UAE through many student outreach programmes, including Engineer the Future. I was pleased to see top-quality aluminium applications by bright young minds that will one day lead the future of UAE industry.'
Earlier this year, EGA launched a new student engagement and mentorship programme for female UAE students. Ershaad aims to encourage and prepare young women to pursue careers in industry with a focus on enhancing critical skills for professional development through dedicated mentoring by EGA experts.

Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, today announced the introduction of new innovative wearable safety technology in its annual 'Beat the Heat' programme to prevent heat-related illness amongst industrial workers in the hot UAE summer. Heat-related illness is a hazard for anyone working outside in the UAE summer, and can be fatal if left untreated. EGA's industrial processes generate further heat and must operate continuously, meaning work is conducted outside around-the-clock all summer. EGA is a global leader in combating heat-related illness, with no cases since 2021. EGA has been trialling wearable technology to monitor critical health indicators during the summer since 2022. The new wearable technology is designed for challenging industrial environments like smelters. The technology offers enhanced location services, connectivity and consistent real-time data feeds accessible by EGA supervisors and medical teams. The devices provide automated work and rest cycles if core body temperature rises beyond a specified threshold. 'Beat the Heat' is EGA's annual summer-long, comprehensive programme to combat occupational heat stress and entirely prevent heat-related illness. The initiative has been running for over a decade to drive awareness amongst EGA's employees of the early signs of heat stress, and equip and empower them to take action to prevent the onset of heat-related illness. This year, EGA has also deployed full body cooling units at EGA medical centres and selected operational areas in Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah. The cooling suits offer rapid, non-invasive core body cooling to support emergency response. Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium , said: 'Heat-related illness is a serious challenge in our region. At EGA, our goal each summer is to engage everyone in ensuring we have zero cases of heat-related illness at our company, and together we have a long track record of success. Technology has the potential to make our Beat the Heat programme even more effective.' EGA's 'Beat the Heat' campaign includes hydration testing before and during shifts, scheduled cooling breaks, access to cooling showers, and dedicated rest zones across EGA's operations. Employees and contractors use cooling booths, drinking water stations, icemakers, and portable air conditioning units to stay cool and hydrated throughout the day. EGA achieved zero recordable heat-related illnesses for the third consecutive summer in 2024. EGA last cases of recordable heat-related illness were in 2021, when two employees required treatment at the company's medical centres. In both cases, the employees received hydration via intravenous drips and fully recovered within hours.2018.

Federal Youth Authority and EGA partner to create development opportunities for youth in the UAE - Middle East Business News and Information
Emirates The Federal Youth Authority (FYA) and Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside of oil and gas, signed a cooperation agreement to enhance joint efforts towards creating distinctive development opportunities for young UAE nationals. In the presence of His Excellency Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi, UAE Minister of State for Youth Affairs, the agreement was signed by His Excellency Khaled Mohammed Al Nuaimi, Director of the Federal Youth Authority, and Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium at EGA's headquarters in Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi. Under the agreement, the FYA and EGA will work together to develop an initiative aimed at fostering a supportive ecosystem that unlocks growth opportunities for youth in the UAE, in line with the National Youth Agenda 2031. Investing in talents: Commenting on the agreement, His Excellency Khaled Mohammed Al Nuaimi said: 'Empowering the youth and providing them with the skills and opportunities they need is at the heart of the national vision to shape the future. We are pleased to partner with EGA, a leading industrial company that shares our efforts and aspirations to empower a new generation that is well aware of its critical role in driving the development process. We can see this commitment clearly in the company's extensive track record of investing in young talents and enabling them to innovate. We are certain that through this agreement, we can foster a culture of excellence, creativity and collaboration among the young generation, and enable them to contribute to the UAE's economic and social development.' Key pillar: For his part, Abdulnasser Bin Kalban said: 'EGA is committed to empowering young people and supporting their role as a key pillar in our efforts to drive positive change and support comprehensive development. The agreement with the Federal Youth Authority reflects our decades-long journey in creating development opportunities to empower the next generation of leaders, in line with the vision of our wise leadership. EGA established its Youth Council in 2018, in line with the wise leadership's vision to highlight the role that the youth play and empower them to lead the UAE's development and innovation. The company's team includes more than 700 employees under the age of 35. EGA also runs outreach programmes to inspire youth to specialise in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These programmes – which include 'Engineer the Future' and EGA's Ambassador Programme – have engaged more than 35,000 students since 2018.
