Officials try to identify 18 bodies in deadly Iraq shopping mall fire
An Iraqi medical official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment said the final death toll was 63, including 18 bodies that could not be identified due to the severity of the burns and would undergo DNA testing.
The Corniche Hypermarket mall in the town of Kut in Wasit province, a five-story building containing restaurants, shops and a supermarket, had opened just days before the blaze, which officials said broke out late Wednesday on the second floor in an area selling perfume and cosmetics.
Civil defense crews were able to rescue 45 people from the burning building. Officials said that most of those who died were trapped on the upper floors.
While the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, officials blamed lack of safety standards in the building for the scale of the tragedy.
Provincial Gov. Mohammed al-Miyahi has said that the building owner did not implement fire safety measures and had not applied for required permits.
The provincial council of Wasit on Thursday voted to form committees to carry out building safety inspections and to suspend the director of Kut municipality and the director of occupational safety until investigations into the fire are complete.
Al-Miyahi said Thursday that legal complaints had been filed against the building owner and shopping center owner, who could not be reached for comment. The governor said in a press conference that the son of the shopping center owner and other members of his family were among the victims in the blaze.
Poor building standards have often contributed to tragic fires in Iraq. In July 2021, a blaze at a hospital in the Iraqi city of Nasiriyah that killed between 60 to 92 people was determined to have been fueled by highly flammable, low-cost type of 'sandwich panel' cladding that is illegal in Iraq.
In 2023, more than 100 people died in a fire at a wedding hall in the predominantly Christian area of Hamdaniya in Nineveh province after the ceiling panels above a pyrotechnic machine burst into flames.

Friends remember man killed in Isanti County Fair crash
A man killed in an accident at a local county fair is being remembered for being a dedicated husband and hard worker. Josh Wines, 28, was driving in a truck as part of the "Night of Destruction" event at the Isanti County Fair on Thursday. He crashed with another vehicle and had to be air-lifted to North Memorial Hospital where he later died. "Josh's wife called me and let me know that he was in an accident," said Mike Hansen, owner of Long Shot Trucking, where Wines worked for the last year. "[He was] just a light. Never really complained about anything. He was just happy to be here." Hansen said he talked about driving in the Isanti County Fair race for a long time. "He was so excited. I think he spent a year getting a car ready for this race," said Hansen. "I spoke with his dad recently and he wasn't able to do the race last year, but got in this year and was super excited about it." Not only was this race a big deal to Wines, but so was the weekend ahead. "He worked Wednesday, Thursday was the county fair, they had planned on going, and then Friday morning they were heading out," said Hansen. Wines and his wife, Kayla, had their camper already packed and ready to head to South Dakota for their honeymoon. A trip that never happened because of this unimaginable tragedy. Loved ones were left heartbroken. "He's going to be missed by a lot of people. He's got a lot of friends, a lot of people that really did respect him. He was a good kid," said Hansen.

Driver Crashes Into San Jose Post Office, Igniting Fire
A driver crashed a vehicle into a post office in San Jose, Calif., early Sunday, igniting a fire that took more than 90 minutes to extinguish, the authorities said. Firefighters were called at about 3 a.m. Pacific time on Sunday to the U.S. post office in the Almaden Valley area of San Jose and found the building engulfed in flames, the authorities said. He also acknowledged that mental health issues could have been an underlying factor. 'Criminal acts require accountability,' Mr. Mahan added, 'but we also need to commit ourselves to expanding behavioral health treatment and intervening earlier in California to reduce the likelihood that situations like this transpire.' Marcus Lee, who works at a massage therapy business near the post office, was alarmed by the damage he saw, with the charred exterior and a gaping hole in the front. Ole Miss issues statement on fallen football star
The Ole Miss football team was hit with tragic news Sunday when it was announced that 18-year-old Rebels freshman Corey Adams was killed in a shooting Saturday in Cordova, Tennessee, which is a suburb of Memphis. According to the Vicksburg Post, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said 18-year-old Adams was killed, and four others were injured, in a shooting in Cordova, Tennessee, which is an eastern suburb of Memphis. Adams had signed to play football at Ole Miss back in December of 2024 and had already enrolled in school for the spring semester. The school released a statement on Adams' passing. 'We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away last night in Cordova, Tennessee. While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,' the statement said. 'Out of respect for his family, we will not be commenting further at this time. We ask the Ole Miss community to keep Corey in their thoughts and respect the privacy of everyone involved.' Adams high school has also released a statement via Facebook on his tragic loss. 'Corey Adams was more than a football player! He was a friend, brother, son, student, and all-around great young man. We never question God but this is one we just don't understand. This wasn't supposed to be the end of his story but we will #DoIt4Co,' Edna Karr High School said in their Facebook post. More details about what happened at the scene of the crime have yet to be released, and so far, the sheriff's department has not said if a suspect has been arrested yet. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has yet to release his own statement about Adams but he may do so in the coming days.
