Cotswold Olimpicks could be added to Heritage list
The addition of the Cotswold Olimpicks to a new heritage list could be "vital" for its future, a historian has said.
The event takes place in Chipping Campden and counts the world shin-kicking championships and tug o' war among its disciplines.
The government will soon be seeking submissions from the public to nominate their favourite traditions that best reflect the nation, which will be recorded in the new Inventory of Living Heritage in the UK.
Graham Greenall, a custodian of the event's 400-year history, said its inclusion on the list would be "vital" because "it is the traditions of ordinary people that could go missing".

The Cotswold Olimpicks was started by Robert Dover, an author and attorney, who, after moving to Chipping Campden, wanted to channel the competitive traits of residents in 1612.
It is thought William Shakespeare may have attended the games in their early days, shortly before his death in 1616.
The wrestling scene in As You Like It and the line "How did your dog run on Cotsall (Cotswold)?" in the Merry Wives of Windsor are thought to be inspired by the games.
Cheese rolling on Cooper's Hill, surfing the Severn Bore, and the Woolsack Races in Tetbury may also be submitted for the list.
Mr Greenall said, despite the global recognition some Gloucestershire traditions receive, their inclusion on the list would prevent them from going "missing".
"Royalty [is] self-sustaining, but with cheese rolling and the football in the river, if they stop for a while, it's quite difficult to resurrect things," he said.
"I think the best part about it is all these traditions, although they're incredibly well known, are all run and funded by locals.
"It's their traditions, it's their thing."
The government will work with the devolved governments to create the list and will consider submissions from across the UK.
It comes after the UK signed the 2003 Unesco Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Culture Heritage, which requires member states to compile an inventory of living heritage practised by communities in each country.

Conclave actor Ralph Fiennes said he felt 'flattered' when he learned the new Pope had watched the Oscar-winning film that sees his character arrange a papal gathering to elect the next head of the Catholic Church. Pope Leo XIV made history as the Church's first American pontiff when he was elected leader in early May, following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday. The Pope's older brother, John Prevost, told NBC News that the former cardinal watched the movie before voting in the conclave began – so he would know 'how to behave'. In an appearance on The One Show, Fiennes was asked about the film and whether he felt surprised at the news Pope Leo XIV had watched the movie. 'Didn't his brother suggest he watch it, so he could learn how a Conclave went or something? And I was of course flattered,' he told the show. Asked what he said to his brother before the conclave, Mr Prevost told NBC News in May: 'I said: 'Are you ready for this? Did you watch the movie Conclave, so you know how to behave?'' 'And he had just finished watching the movie Conclave, so he knew how to behave,' he said with a laugh. Fiennes, 62, played Cardinal Lawrence in the film, also starring Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow, that was adapted from Robert Harris's novel of the same name. He was nominated for leading actor gongs at the Oscars and Baftas earlier in the year, but missed out both times to Adrien Brody – who won for his role playing Laszlo Toth in historical epic The Brutalist. Overall, however, the film performed well during awards season and won the adapted screenplay Oscar and four Baftas for best film, adapted screenplay, editing and outstanding British film. Fiennes, also known for playing Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter film series, appeared on the show to discuss Theatre Royal Bath's new staging of William Shakespeare play As You Like It, which he is directing. He said: 'I've done a lot of serious Shakespeare tragedies and histories with a lot of blood and gore and angst, and I just felt compelled by As You Like It. 'It's a wonderful play of spontaneous young love. And I've not been in it, so I have no baggage about having been in it. 'I've seen it before, and it's something about young love, young people transformed by love, by desire, in the context of a forest where, like in A Midsummer Night's Dream, their personalities, who they are, their sense of themselves, is changed by love and by nature.'

May 14—Seeing a great live concert can lift your spirits and boost your energy, but it can also empty your wallet. Thankfully, there are lots of free concerts and other performances around Maine this summer. Many shows are part of a free concert series in a town park or public space. Portland also has free Shakespeare in the Park, and there are free shows for younger folks at Opera Maine and Ogunquit Playhouse. Here then is a list of some free shows to see around Maine this summer, plus info on several free concert series, too. June 8: Resurgam Music and Arts Festival, Ocean Gateway Pier, Portland Organized by the Maine Academy of Modern Music, this free festival is in its fourth year. It was created to fill a void left by the ending of the Old Port Festival in 2019, after 46 years. Some of the performers scheduled include the Fogcutters, with guests Kenya Hall and Gina Alibrio, Genevieve Stokes, Random Ideas and Louisa Stancioff. June 19: Guys and Dolls, Ogunquit Playhouse Ogunquit Playhouse is offering one free ticket to one of its shows this season for people 25 or younger. To get the single ticket, you have to be a Maine or New Hampshire resident and show a valid ID. Tickets can be reserved at the box office by calling (207) 646-5511.
