Malaysia to develop digital trust and data security strategy, establish data commission
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is committed to developing the Digital Trust and Data Security Strategy 2026-2030 and establishing an independent Data Commission to safeguard digital transformation through a comprehensive national ecosystem.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said these initiatives will strengthen data protection and governance, enhance cyber resilience, and uphold the integrity of Malaysia's digital ecosystem.
This will ensure the nation's progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies remains secure, transparent, and accountable.
"The Digital Trust and Data Security Strategy will set a long-term roadmap for building resilience against emerging threats, advancing data integrity, and strengthening public confidence in Malaysia's digital future.
"Complementing this, the Data Commission will function as an independent oversight body, tasked with safeguarding and ensuring robust data governance while promoting ethical AI practices," he said at the opening of ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 (AAIMS25) today.
According to Gobind, the commission's framework will be designed for interoperability across ASEAN, enabling Malaysia to contribute meaningfully to a region-wide trust architecture
"By taking a proactive, future-oriented approach, Malaysia is positioning itself not only to meet current challenges, but to lead in shaping regional and global standards for trustworthy AI and digital systems.
"Our efforts to build trust through the forthcoming Digital Trust and Data Security Strategy and the establishment of the Data Commission are deliberately designed to complement and strengthen ASEAN's collective frameworks," he added.
Gobind emphasised that Malaysia's domestic initiatives will become building blocks for a wider ASEAN trust architecture - one capable of protecting data, ensuring AI safety, and fostering public confidence across borders, especially in this agentic age of AI.
Malaysia is contributing to a region-wide trust architecture by aligning with ASEAN initiatives such as the ASEAN Guide on AI Governance and Ethics, the ASEAN AI Safety Network, and the ASEAN Cybersecurity Cooperation Strategy 2026-2030.
"This architecture will enable AI to operate safely across jurisdictions, ensure consistent data governance, and extend public confidence beyond national borders.
"By working collectively, ASEAN can close the AI divide, safeguard our societies, and unlock the full potential of innovation - building an AI future that is inclusive, secure, and distinctly ASEAN," he said. - Bernama

SST Maintained Due To Broad Industry Understanding
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The government is of the view that revenue collection under consumption tax through the Sales and Service Tax (SST) should be continued and can be further improved, as it is an existing tax that is already understood by the industry, traders, and the public. The Ministry of Finance (MoF) said SST can still be enhanced to generate additional revenue and provide a faster fiscal impact for the government, as it has been in use for over 40 years. 'This is in contrast to reintroducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which would require a longer preparation period of up to two years to allow companies time to prepare and update their systems for GST implementation,' it said.

Federal Territories Forge Ties With Singapore, Indonesia To Drive ASEAN Vision 2045
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Close cooperation between the Federal Territories, Singapore, and Indonesia is expected to bring significant benefits to all three parties in realising the ASEAN Vision 2045. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said cooperation with both countries was discussed during a courtesy call from Singapore's Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and Ministry of Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling, and Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya Sugiarto, today. During her meeting with Low, who is also the Mayor of Singapore's South West district, Dr Zaliha said discussions centred on the experiences and best practices of ASEAN cities, including the CHASE (Clean, Healthy, Advanced, Safe and Eco-Friendly) City concept adopted in the Federal Territories. 'I also shared how this initiative began by listening to the voices of the people and integrating those aspirations into developments such as Kota MADANI,' she said in a Facebook post. Dr Zaliha and Low also exchanged views on women-led urban leadership, the clean energy transition, carbon pricing, strengthening coastal resilience and addressing the challenges of an ageing society. Regarding her meeting with Bima Arya, Dr Zaliha said they spoke about bold ideas for the region's future, including the vision of ASEAN 2045 with easier travel across borders, smarter waste and logistics systems, and stronger digital connections between cities. 'I also shared the Federal Territories' role as a pioneer of the CHASE City concept under Malaysia MADANI and extended an invitation for Jakarta to join this journey,' she said. Additionally, she said the discussion touched on opportunities for cooperation in the digital economy, such as a cashless society, as well as empowering youth and women through flexible work infrastructure, including cloud kitchen initiatives currently being implemented in the Federal Territories. Dr Zaliha also invited Indonesia to join the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 celebration to strengthen ties between the people of both countries and reinforce the network of ASEAN cities towards an inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous shared future.
