Pittsburgh Penguins eye roster refresh: Young stars like Rutger McGroarty and Ville Koivunen lead NHL action

Pittsburgh Penguins (via Getty Images) The Pittsburgh Penguins are preparing for a pivotal 2025–26 NHL season, one that could take them in a fresh era led by rising stars like Rutger McGroarty and Ville Koivunen. With a handful of veteran contracts locked in and several pending free agents uncertain to return, Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas appears ready to open the door for youth. Top candidates for Pittsburgh Penguins At the front of the pack is top prospect Rutger McGroarty, who made an impressive contribution last season with three points in five NHL games before a foot injury ended his progression. Having played on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust, his combination of pace and pugnacity makes him a good bet to make the roster out of camp. Ville Koivunen, who collected seven helpers in eight games of NHL action in the 2024–25 season, is versatile and cool, playing with Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, and this gives him a good shot at cementing a full-time spot. On the blue side, Owen Pickering and Jack St. Ivany are serious challengers. St. Ivany recovered from slow starts and injuries early in the season to stay strong in the AHL late, while Pickering played top-four minutes in the NHL last season alongside Kris Letang. Forward Avery Hayes is making waves following an impressive 60-point AHL season. Recently signed to an entry-level deal, he's recognized for his tireless pace and scoring potential. And as for the longer shots, Sam Poulin, Mikhail Ilyin, and Atley Calvert are still worth mentioning. Though they might not make the opening night roster, their excellent play in the AHL or overseas could bring mid-season call-ups. And let us not forget goaltender Joel Blomqvist, whose NHL readiness would be thwarted only by the presence of Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic. With roster room and a clear desire for new energy, the likes of Rutger McGroarty and Ville Koivunen are presented with the golden chance to take the franchise in a certain direction right away. What is certain is that the Penguins are set to provide youth with an opportunity—now it is a matter of waiting for the prospects to seize it.

3 reasons John Cena should win the WWE Intercontinental Championship in his farewell tour

Image via WWE John Cena has not had the best history with the WWE Intercontinental Championship in the company. John Cena's farewell tour has been going strong and according to his plan of ruining wrestling. He did the unthinkable by turning heel and used his antics to win his 17th World Championship, setting the record for most World titles. However, there is one particular title that Cena has never won or even competed for on live television in WWE, the prestigious Intercontinental title. The workhorse championship has been a symbol of excellence and held by countless legends and Hall of Famers in the company over the years. With Cena only having a few months left before drawing the curtain on his in-ring career, here are three reasons he should win the IC title before retirement: 3. Steal opportunity in his plan to ruin wrestling John Cena let out years of frustrations and mistreatment of fans at the end of the 2025 WWE Elimination Chamber event. He has been on mission to ruin the one thing he loved for over two decades. In doing so, he can steal another opportunity, much like the Undisputed WWE title, by clinching the Intercontinental title, which has been a stepping stone for many rising stars over the years. 2. Double Champion to establish further dominance as a heel After defeating Cody Rhodes to become the Undisputed WWE Champion, John Cena has established his dominance over the WWE landscape with his demeanor as a monster heel. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The WWE Intercontinental title might just add more to that run should Cena become a double champion. This would be the first time in close to two decades that Cena could hold two titles at once which would be a sight to witness on the farewell tour. 1. The GOAT needs to become the Grand Slam Champion John Cena officially claimed the status of 'The Greatest of All Time' at WrestleMania 41 when he dethroned Cody Rhodes. However, should his farewell tour end without an WWE Intercontinental Championship reign, he would never be able to claim the status of a 'Grand Slam Champion.' The Cenation Leader has claimed all titles, except the IC championship, which is being a barrier in his road to achieving Grand Slam. This makes its highly important for his legacy to capture the workhorse title before riding off in the sunset. Also read: Roman Reigns spotted off-duty after vanishing from WWE post-WrestleMania
