Delhi: LSE graduate among 3 held for cyber extortion racket run from Thailand
Delhi Police arrested three men, including a London School of Economics (LSE) graduate, for allegedly running an international cyber extortion racket from Thailand to clear mounting debts. The accused—Sumit (42), Prince (35), and Nitish (31)—posed as a notorious gangster and threatened a Delhi-based businessman over WhatsApp, demanding cryptocurrency payments, police said. The trio were arrested soon after they returned to India. Police recovered two mobile phones—one used to generate the crypto QR code and another for WhatsApp calls. The caller, impersonating a dreaded gangster, demanded money through a crypto QR code and warned of dire consequences—including harm to his children—if he refused. A case under Section 308(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered, following which a joint team from DBG Road Police Station and the Cyber Police Station (Central District) launched an investigation. Using advanced cyber tools and in coordination with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), investigators traced the call and QR code to Thailand. The accused had purchased an international SIM card there to evade detection. 'The suspects thought operating from abroad would shield them, but our cyber team tracked their digital trail,' said deputy commissioner of police (Central) Nidhin Valsan. The trio were arrested soon after they returned to India. Police recovered two mobile phones—one used to generate the crypto QR code and another for WhatsApp calls. Investigators said Nitish, an LSE postgraduate from Moti Nagar, was the mastermind behind the crypto transactions. Sumit, a BCom graduate and jewellery trader from West Punjabi Bagh, knew the victim personally, while Prince, a Class 9 drop-out from Roshanara Road, assisted in making the threat calls. During interrogation, the men allegedly confessed they were drowning in debt and turned to extortion as a 'quick fix.' 'They used a gangster's name to scare the victim into paying,' said an officer.

Medical professional lured through ‘sex chat' blackmailed; loses Rs 94 lakh
A 35-year-old medical professional from the city was duped of Rs 94 lakh after he fell prey to cyber fraudsters who posed as a woman and contacted him on social media platforms. Later, the fraudsters threatened the doctor that they would share his intimate images on social media platforms and kept demanding money from him. Eventually, the victim approached the police following which an FIR was registered against unidentified persons. The doctor in his complaint said that in February this year, he met a woman who identified herself as Somya Awasthi on a social media platform. The woman said that she was pursuing her MBBS from Chandigarh and her parents were residing in Delhi. He said they exchanged numbers and the woman would say she was feeling lonely. Over a period, she would ask for gifts and he would transfer money to a bank account provided by her. She never showed him the bills for the articles she purchased. He said that eventually they got close and would have 'sex chats'. He said she started sending her nude photographs to him and asked him to share his intimate photographs which he did. Later in May, she said she was coming to Mumbai and he paid for her business class tickets. However later when he checked there was no such flight coming on that day. On May 2, the woman sent him a one view photograph which claimed that some Thailand-based hacker had got access to their photographs and chats demanding 3.10 bitcoin (Rs 2.5 crore approximately) failing which he would make their chats viral. The woman claimed that she had sold off her gold jewellery to pay him. She then said that if he did not make the payment, she would send their intimate clips to his work place and medical association. Fearing this, he took loans from several banks and over a period sent her nearly Rs 94 lakh. When he transferred the money however, the account name mentioned Jasmeen Kaur. He became suspicious and went through her social media profile and checked with the college she claimed to be doing MBBS from. There he found that a person named Somya Aswasthi had done Arts. Realising that he had been defrauded, he approached the cyber police station where an FIR was registered on Friday. An officer said that they have some technical leads and teams have been sent to nab the accused.

Thai, Cambodian armies hold meeting on border issues
Bangkok/Phnom Penh: Thailand and Cambodia confirmed on Saturday that army representatives of the two countries held a special meeting of the Thailand-Cambodia Regional Border Committee (RBC) in Thailand's Trat province on the same day. According to the Thai Navy, the commander of Chanthaburi and Trat border defence command of the Thai side and the commander of Cambodia's military region 3 held the meeting to settle relevant issues through peaceful means, thus maintaining peace in border areas and well-being of the peoples of both countries. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding following the meeting, the Thai Navy said, Xinhua news agency reported. Cambodian Defence Ministry's Undersecretary of State and spokesperson Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata said on Saturday that chiefs of Cambodian and Thai military regions held a special meeting on the same day to discuss border issues following a ceasefire. This meeting reaffirmed the importance of maintaining regular communication between armed forces of military regions of the two countries as well as between border defence units of the two sides, striving to resolve issues peacefully and avoiding confrontations, she said. Cambodia hoped that the meeting would enhance full and effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement, helping restore peace, stability and normalcy in border areas, she added. On Thursday, an ASEAN Interim Observer Team (IOT) visited Cambodia-Thailand border areas. Led by Malaysian military attache to Cambodia, the IOT, comprised of military attaches from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam, visited villages in Banteay Meanchey province, where Thai armed forces set up barbed wire and placed tyres, as well as some border checkpoints, according to Cambodian Defence Ministry's Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata. "Once again, Cambodia calls on Thailand to uphold the spirit of the ceasefire in order to achieve a peaceful resolution to the issue in accordance with the principle of international law, ensuring a just, impartial and fair outcome that will bring peace and prosperity to both nations and peoples," Socheata said in a press briefing. Armed clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces errupted on July 24 along their border. The two ASEAN member states agreed to a ceasefire on the afternoon of July 28, which took effect at midnight on the same day.
