KUALA LUMPUR: The main surveillance radar has been installed on the Royal Malaysian Navy's (RMN) second littoral combat ship, said the shipbuilder, Lumut Naval Shipyard (Lunas).
The video of the installation was posted by Lunas on Facebook.
The Thales Smart-S Mark Two radar system is a state-of-the-art medium-to-long range three dimensional radar designed for naval surveillance and threat detection.
The radar provides simultaneous air and surface target tracking with high accuracy, even in cluttered littoral environments.
It is capable of detecting up to 500 targets, such as sea-skimming missiles, fighter aircraft, and fast attack craft, 250km away with minimal operator workload.
Developed by French defence technology firm Thales, the Smart-S Mark Two is optimised for frigate-sized platforms and has been deployed with several navies.
Previously, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the government was satisfied with the construction progress of all five LCS, despite a minor delay due to supply issues involving original equipment manufacturers.
During his visit to Lunas in March, he said the project had reached 71.62 per cent completion against the planned 73 per cent.
Khaled added that the first ship is expected to be delivered in August 2026, followed by the second ship in April 2027.

LE BOURGET, France: Geopolitical tensions roiled the opening of the Paris Air Show on Monday as French authorities sealed off Israeli weapons industry booths amid the conflicts in Iran and Gaza, a move that Israel condemned as "outrageous." The decision added drama to the major aerospace industry event, which was already under the shadow of last week's deadly crash of Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Black walls were installed around the stands of five Israeli defence firms at the trade fair in Le Bourget, an airfield on the outskirts of Paris. The booths displayed "offensive weapons" that could be used in Gaza – in violation of agreements with Israeli authorities, a French government source told AFP. The companies – Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Rafael, Uvision, Elbit and Aeronautics – make drones and guided bombs and missiles. An Israeli exhibitor wrote a message in yellow chalk on one of the walls, saying the hidden defence systems "are protecting the state of Israel these days. The French government, in the name of discrimination is trying to hide them from you!" French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou defended the decision during a Monday press conference at the air show. "The French government's position was very simple: no offensive weapons at the arms exposition," he said. "Defensive weapons were perfectly acceptable," he added. Bayrou cited the ongoing conflict in Gaza as the rationale behind the ban. "Given the situation in Gaza... which is extremely serious from a humanitarian and security point of view, France was keen to make it clear that offensive weapons should not be present at this exposition," Bayrou said. Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he was shocked by the "outrageous" closure of the pavilions and said the situation should be "immediately corrected." "Israeli companies have signed contracts with the organisers... it's like creating an Israeli ghetto," he said on French television channel LCI. The European manufacturer also said Riyadh Air was buying 25 long-range, wide-body A350-1000 jets. But Boeing chief executive Kelly Ortberg last week cancelled plans to attend the biennial event, to focus on the investigation of the Air India crash. "Our focus is on supporting our customers, rather than announcing orders at this air show," a Boeing spokeswoman told AFP on Monday. Sabah establishes Blue Economy Council to drive sustainable marine growth

KOTA KINABALU (June 16): Sabah has marked a major milestone in its sustainable development journey with the official formation of the Sabah Blue Economy Council (MEBS) — a dedicated platform to coordinate and implement the state's strategic blue economy policies. The establishment of MEBS was approved during the 10th 2025 Sabah Cabinet meeting and its inaugural session, chaired by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, today at Menara Kinabalu. In his address, Hajiji emphasised that MEBS was created as a strategic initiative to ensure Sabah's blue economy sector is developed in a systematic, integrated and high-impact manner, aligned with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan. 'Through MEBS, we will coordinate key policies, approve high-impact programmes and monitor the implementation of the Blue Economy Policy and Strategy Framework. This integrated approach aims to promote sustainable, inclusive and competitive economic growth,' he said. He further noted that MEBS would catalyse technology transfer and innovation within the maritime sector, advancing Sabah's ambition to become a modern, sustainability-driven economy. Highlighting the broader significance of MEBS, Hajiji said it would strengthen collaboration between government agencies, academia, industries and local communities to position Sabah as a leading blue economy hub in Southeast Asia. 'This council reflects the State Government's unwavering commitment to unlocking Sabah's ocean potential, expanding investment opportunities, and enhancing the people's well-being through sustainable and resilient development,' he added. During the inaugural meeting, Hajiji presented letters of appointment to eight core MEBS members. Additionally, seven chairpersons of Technical Committees were appointed to oversee core components of MEBS, including living resource harvesting, marine business, ocean health, marine spatial planning, new resource generation, river management, and intellectual property. These roles will be led by senior officials from key state ministries and technical agencies, including the Department of Lands and Surveys, Sabah Biodiversity Centre, and Department of Mineral and Geoscience. The Sabah Maju Jaya Secretariat (SSMJ) will serve as the MEBS Secretariat, ensuring the effective coordination and implementation of council decisions from both technical and administrative standpoints.
