Man charged after 21-year-old killed in Quebec jail
Sébastien Bossé, 54, has been charged with involuntary homicide in connection with the 2022 death of Nicous D'André Spring.
The 21-year-old was severely injured on Christmas Eve when correctional officers at the Bordeaux jail put him in a spit hood after an altercation with another inmate.
They then pepper-sprayed him twice while still wearing the head covering.
Spring was rushed to hospital and died of his injuries the next day.
After appearing at the Montreal courthouse on Thursday, Bossé was released and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
Spring's family, the Red Coalition and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association had demanded an inquiry into systemic racism in the provincial detention system after his death.
Quebec's chief coroner also ordered a public inquiry to provide answers to the many unanswered questions the family had around Spring's death.
Quebec's public safety ministry confirmed in 2023 that Spring had been unlawfully detained as he was supposed to be released from custody on Dec. 23.
He was still in jail on the day of the Dec. 24 intervention, despite a judge authorizing his release.
Montreal police arrested Spring on Dec. 20, 2023, on charges of assaulting a peace officer, criminal harassment and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
He was also facing two counts of breach of a condition of release.
He had pleaded not guilty to all charges.

April Laffrenier was found guilty July 3 of offences under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act in the Ontario Court of Justice in the City of Temiskaming Shores. Laffrenier was found guilty of four counts of failure to comply with prescribed standards of care, one count of exposing animals to undue risk of distress, one count of failure to comply with an order and one count of permitting animals to be in distress. Banned from having animals She was fined $3,500 and is permanently prohibited from owning, having custody or care of, or residing with, any animals, the Ministry of the Attorney General said in a news release. Laffrenier was also ordered to surrender any animals she currently owns within 30 days of sentencing. 'A provincial animal welfare inspector, or an individual with equal authority, shall have the ability to conduct an investigation of the defendant's dwelling or other property owned or operated for the duration of the prohibition order,' the release said. Since then, more than 15,900 distress orders have been issued, more than 2,000 charges laid and 12,900 animals removed from 'situations of distress negatively impacting their welfare.'

Shot fired at vehicle during road rage incident

(Melanie Borrelli / CTV Windsor) The Windsor Police Service (WPS) is investigating after they say a gunshot was fired during a road rage incident. The incident happened around 11 p.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of Riverside Drive East. When officers arrived on scene, they located a vehicle with damage to its rear window consistent with a gunshot. According to police, two vehicles were heading east on Riverside Drive when one driver reportedly yelled obscenities at the complainant. Then, someone in the vehicle allegedly shot a gun at the complainant's car. The suspect vehicle fled the scene, and no physical injuries have been reported. The suspect vehicle is described as a late model, four-door sedan, possibly grey or chocolate brown in colour. The driver is described as a black man in his 20s. Two other occupants were seen in the vehicle, though no descriptions are currently available. The Major Crimes Unit is investigation the incident and are asking residents and business owners to review dashcam or surveillance footage between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on July 26 for any relevant evidence.
