Nik Collection 8 now has a much more logical Photoshop panel instead of the old Nik Palette. DxO
The perennially popular Nik Collection Photoshop plugins from DxO have seen a refresh across all seven of the plugins and now have new integration and powerful features.
Version 8 of the Nik Collection now unlocks the full power of Photoshop masks, while upgrades to the package make the popular Nik Color Efex suite of plugins better than ever. The classic Nik Silver Efex for black and white images has been rethought to ensure striking monochrome images.
The latest Nik Collection of creative Photoshop plugins for photographers now sports a completely redesigned Photoshop panel, powerful new masking functionality and significant improvements to the Silver Efex and Color Efex suites for a more dynamic editing experience.
'With Nik Collection 8, we wanted to enhance both creativity and efficiency,' says Boris Oliviero, Product Director. 'We've reimagined the Photoshop workflow, making it easier than ever to apply powerful effects, refine local adjustments, and move seamlessly between plugins.'
Users of Nik Collection 8 can now import masks directly from Photoshop into any of the Nik plugins, making full use of Photoshop's powerful selection tools. A new feature added to the Local Adjustments panel lets users transfer masks between plugins. When ready, users can send masks created in Nik Collection straight back to Photoshop on a round trip for further editing.
With Nik Collection 8 masks remain accessible at each stage of the workflow, whether they originated in Photoshop or were created using a Nik Collection plugin. There is now a smarter and more flexible round-trip return to Photoshop.
Bringing edits back into Photoshop is now more intuitive and users can choose from converting edits into a Smart Object for non-destructive editing, applying changes to the current layer or by creating a new one. New layers can be generated with a mask for extra flexibility.
The latest version of Nik Collection lets users of Silver Efex view the original color version of ... More the image they are converting to black and white. DxO
Users of Nik Collection can now send their edits directly to Photoshop as a new Photoshop layer while continuing to work inside Nik Collection. This new feature lets users test a multitude of ideas for an image without breaking the creative flow. Once they are back in Photoshop, all their edits will be immediately available.
Nik Collection 8 now has a fully customizable and dockable Photoshop panel, replacing the traditional Nik Palette we are all used to. The new design lets photographers save screen space by choosing which of the plugins they want to display. Any plugin can be launched with a single click creating a more fluid workflow. All the essential controls for managing layers and masks are also immediately accessible. Upgrades To Nik Silver Efex
Possibly one of the most popular of the Nik plugins is Silver Efex, arguably the best black-and-white editing tool on the market. With this new version, Silver Efex gets significant usability and feature boosts. To start with, users can now view their original color image while working on a black-and-white version. This makes it easier to make changes that are dependent on the original image, such as applying Color Filters or adjusting the Sensitivity sliders inside the Film Types filter.
Silver Efex has a streamlined interface that now matches Nik Color Efex and Nik Analog Efex plugins, keeping filters on the left-hand side until they are used to edit an image. Applying presets is now more logical with only the relevant filters appearing on the right-hand side when a preset has been selected.
New Local Adjustments for ClearView and Selective Tones can now be applied in selective areas and each filter also includes some pre-defined options for quick application.
One of the most popular and versatile plugins bundled with Nik Collection 8 is Color Efex Pro. This ... More has now been updated with new color masks and much better handling of TIFF image files. DxO New Color Masks For Nik Color Efex
Targeting local adjustments is now more powerful in Nik Color Efex. Users can select a range of colors for changes to be applied. A click on the desired color brings up handles for tweaking and making fresh adjustments.
Upgrades to Nik Color Efex make it quicker to switch to TIFF format when using the Quick Export button. The export options are now instantly accessible so that users can tweak the Quick Export configuration directly rather than navigating through a menu. Price and Availability:
The new Nik Collection 8 is available now from the DxO website for both macOS and Windows platforms. A new license costs $159,99 / £145.99 / €159,99. Anyone with a license of Nik Collection 6 or 7 can upgrade to the new version for $89.99 £79.99 / €89,99. Watch the Electric BMW M3 (Silently) Lap the Nürburgring

We knew it was coming: An electric BMW M3 . In February, we got our first glimpse of the EV performance car's battery and motors in action on an icy lake bed . Now, a new video shows a prototype of the electric M3 taking its talents to the Nürburgring. And doing so silently. A video shot by CarSpyMedia shows the new electric M3 tearing up the Green Hell. It may not be making any noise—other than tire squeal—but it looks like it's moving quickly as hell. The video is relatively short, but we get multiple angles of the new M3 in action, including some close-ups of the prototype on the road. The M-inspired camouflage does a decent job of hiding the M3's final looks, but we can still clearly see the car's extended fenders, aggressive bumper treatments, and the Neue Klasse design language. The overall shape gives off shades of the 2002, while the slim light fixtures and tiny kidney grilles are a far cry from the current G80 model. At least, they look much smaller under all that camouflage. So, how much power will this electric M3 produce? Unfortunately, the details are still pretty murky. BMW has previously suggested that an M3 with an electric powertrain could easily exceed 600 horsepower, with even more powerful 700-horsepower variants possible later in the vehicle's lifecycle. We won't know much about the electric M3 otherwise until we gets closer to the vehicle's debut date. We expect to see the electric 3 Series this year, but the M3 variant likely won't debut until sometime in 2026, before going on sale in 2027. The first vehicle to show off the brand's new Neue Klasse design language will be the iX3 electric SUV later this year. 2026 Volvo EX40: What We Know So Far

Overview Volvo has a knack for making boxy look chic, and the EX40 is a prime example. The brand's electric compact SUV is drenched in Scandinavian style from bumper to bumper, inside and out. Entry-level models are motivated by a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 248 horsepower, while a 402-hp all-wheel drive arrangement in the dual-motor variant makes the EX40 a mighty quick cube. With an estimated driving range of up to 293 miles on a full charge, the EX40 may provoke range anxiety more so than in competitors such as the Tesla Model Y and Cadillac Optiq, but the Volvo's appeal lies in its impressive cargo capacity and buttoned-up Swedish mien. What's New for 2026? After last year's updates brought an optional Performance software upgrade and a Black Edition appearance package to the EX40, the 2026 model carries on unchanged. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Volvo EX40 is expected to start around $54,000 and go up to $63,000 depending on the trim and options. Single Motor Core $54,000 (est) Twin Motor Core $56,000 (est) Single Motor Plus $57,000 (est) Twin Motor Plus $59,000 (est) Single Motor Ultra $61,000 (est) Twin Motor Ultra $63,000 (est) It's our feeling that the Ultra is the best choice of the bunch, as it adds unique 20-inch wheels, automatic high-beam headlamps, a Harman/Kardon stereo system, adaptive cruise control, and a semi-autonomous driving mode for not a lot of money. We'll leave the decision between the single and dual-motor powertrains to you since each offers different range and power outputs to suit specific needs. EV Motor, Power, and Performance Entry-level EX40 models are powered by a single, rear-mounted electric motor with 248 horsepower. Twin Motor models come with two electric motors, one at each axle, giving it full-time all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive powertrain puts out a stout 402 horsepower. During our test drive, we noted a compliant ride, a hushed cabin, and a refined cruising demeanor; aggressive drivers may find the Polestar 2 a better fit. Regenerative braking allows for one-pedal driving, which is a desirable and convenient EV feature that we appreciate. 0–60-MPH Times In our testing, a dual-motor EX40 got to 60 mph in a swift 4.1 seconds. We haven't yet tested the single-motor version, but when we tested that configuration previously in a comparable XC40 Recharge, it got to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. View Exterior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Towing and Payload Capacity While Volvo's little electric SUV isn't the vehicle to choose if you foresee boat-hauling in your future, it still has the ability to tow up to 2000 pounds. Range, Charging, and Battery Life The EX40 uses a 79-kWh battery pack that Volvo says is good for up to 293 miles of driving per charge in the Single Motor and 260 miles in the Twin Motor variant. Those range estimates put the XC40 Recharge at a disadvantage against the many SUVs in this segment that are capable of more than 300 miles per charge. The EX40 is capable of charging at DC fast-charging terminals as well as at-home chargers via a 240-volt outlet. In our testing at a fast-charger, the EX40 got from a 10 percent to a 90 percent charge in 46 minutes. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 EX40 yet, but last year's single-motor model returned results of 118 MPGe city and 94 MPGe highway. The Twin Motor model's fuel economy estimates were lower at 103 MPGe city and 85 MPGe highway. The last time we tested an XC40 Single Motor, it returned 69 MPGe, and the driving range on our 75-mph highway fuel economy test was a disappointing 190 miles. Without any significant changes since then, the newest model should deliver similar results, but we'll update this section when we get our hands on a new EX40. For more information about the XC40's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The cabin of the EX40 offers everything we love about the gas-powered XC40, including thoughtful cubby storage, a comfortable driving position, and spacious first- and second-row seating. In the transition to an EV powertrain, the EX40 has lost none of its cargo space, so we expect it to hold the same number of carry-on suitcases as the XC40. In our testing, the XC40 held 23 carry-on suitcases with its rear seats folded. In addition, the lack of a four-cylinder engine under the hood frees up space for a front trunk (frunk), which is the ideal space to store the EX40's charging cables. View Interior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Infotainment and Connectivity All EX40s come with Volvo's latest infotainment software developed in conjunction with Google's Android Automotive. The EX40's corporate cousin, the Polestar 2, also offers such an infotainment system, which we found to be intuitive and snappy in its functionality, but the Volvo version suffers from small onscreen buttons that are difficult to actuate while driving. A standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster provides several options for customization. Despite the collaboration with Google, the new infotainment system provides connectivity options for both Android and Apple iPhone devices; a wireless smartphone charging pad is also offered. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features Volvo offers a host of high-tech driver-assistance features as standard, including automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. For more information about the EX40's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include: Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist Standard adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode Warranty and Maintenance Coverage Volvo offers a well-rounded warranty package on its new cars, including a complimentary scheduled maintenance plan that spans four years or 40,000 miles. Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles Battery components are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 4 years or 40,000 miles Specifications Specifications 2025 Volvo EX40 Twin Motor Ultra Vehicle Type: front- and rear-motor, all-wheel-drive, 5-passenger, 4-door wagon PRICE Base/As Tested: $62,045/$62,045 POWERTRAIN Front Motor: induction AC, 147 hp, 184 lb-ft Rear Motor: permanent-magnet synchronous AC, 255 hp, 310 lb-ft Combined Power: 402 hp Combined Torque: 494 lb-ft Battery Pack: liquid-cooled lithium-ion, 79.0 kWh Onboard Charger: 11.0 kW Peak DC Fast-Charge Rate: 205 kW Transmissions, F/R: direct-drive CHASSIS Suspension, F/R: struts/multilink Brakes, F/R: 13.6-in vented disc/13.4-in vented disc Tires: Pirelli Scorpion Zero Elect 235/45R-20 100H M+S VOL 255/40R-20 101H M+S VOL DIMENSIONS Wheelbase: 106.4 in Length: 174.8 in Width: 73.3 in Height: 65.0 in Passenger Volume, F/R: 50/45 ft3 Cargo Volume, Behind F/R: 58/22 ft3 Curb Weight: 4755 lb C/D TEST RESULTS 60 mph: 4.1 sec 100 mph: 11.0 sec 1/4-Mile: 12.8 sec @ 106 mph Results above omit 1-ft rollout of 0.3 sec. WordPress veterans launch FAIR project to tackle security and control concerns

The recent travails of WordPress have caused consternation among the web community that relies on the platform, which powers more than four in ten websites online today. Now, a coalition of prominent WordPress contributors and the Linux Foundation is unveiling a federated update and plugin-distribution network aimed at eliminating what they describe as a critical 'supply chain security' vulnerability at the core of the world's most widely used website system. The FAIR Package Manager project, to be announced at a conference in Switzerland later today, enables web-hosting companies and large organizations to run their own mirrors of WordPress's core update, plugin, theme, and translation servers. This setup would replace reliance on domain controlled by Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg. Supporters say the new system will strengthen security, reduce costs, and open new commercial opportunities for software that millions depend on for web hosting. The project emerged earlier this year in response to controversial moves by Mullenweg. In September, he cut off access to WP Engine—a popular WordPress hosting provider—accusing it of extracting hundreds of millions of dollars in value from the open-source platform without adequate contributions in return. He also alleged that the company breached WordPress trademarks, creating confusion. Amid the fallout, around 150 employees exited Automattic after Mullenweg offered buyouts to those who disagreed with his handling of the situation. 'In October, when Automattic took over the slug of WP Engine's product within the ecosystem, we received phone calls from the chief legal counsels of some of our clients—these are large corporations—saying, 'this is a supply chain security issue,'' says Karim Marucchi, CEO of enterprise agency Crowd Favorite and one of the project's initiators. Around the same time, Joost de Valk, founder of Yoast SEO, was attempting to communicate with Mullenweg. While de Valk shared the view that more equitable contributions to WordPress were needed, he disagreed with Mullenweg's methods. 'We stopped talking pretty much after that, because I didn't agree with him,' de Valk says. One central concern is that every WordPress site depends on for updates and extensions. 'When we started looking at this, we realized there's a lot of things in this whole ecosystem that we don't control,' de Valk says. 'One of the things that everybody's eyes were opened on was that was, in fact, not part of the WordPress Foundation, but owned by Matt privately, and that he used it as his private website in many ways.' WordPress executive director Mary Hubbard notes that users have always had control over how their sites are updated and where updates originate—flexibility that has existed since WordPress's early days. 'The beauty of WordPress and open source is that people have complete control to run it how they please and modify how it works,' she tells Fast Company. The FAIR system offers an alternative that remains fully compatible with WordPress but operates independently from 'It's still all WordPress,' says de Valk. 'It's just a different distribution.' Rather than forking WordPress, FAIR provides server components that anyone can run. Over 100 contributors from more than 10 organizations have been involved in building it over the past six months, according to Marucchi. The group has asked the Linux Foundation to provide neutral oversight. Hubbard pointed out that some large hosts like Newfold/Bluehost have implemented custom mirrors in the past, and emphasized that WordPress's update system has always allowed users to modify where their updates come from. 'The important thing is that users know where their updates are coming from and have a choice to change it, regardless of their host,' she says. 'WordPress is a critical piece of infrastructure for communication and for organizations that rely on it for their website, for content management, for blogs and media,' says Mike Dolan, SVP of legal and strategic programs at the Linux Foundation. 'And in order to sustain something like that, you need to have a reliable backend behind it.' To avoid centralization, the Linux Foundation has created a technical steering committee cochaired by long-time WordPress leaders Carrie Dils, Mika Epstein, and Ryan McCue. McCue, the architect of the WordPress REST API, called FAIR 'a platform to power the next decades of WordPress,' and noted that the community had 'fractured' and needed to be brought back together. Dolan echoed the sentiment. 'I think the interesting part about this is the organic nature of this,' he says. 'This is something that is coming out of the community. It's people who have lifelong and career-long engagement in the WordPress community who are saying we need to go and build this, and they want to work on it together.' Jory Burson, VP of standards at the Linux Foundation and a participant in the project, hopes it will lead to a 'reintroduction and reenergization of the community.' She adds that morale is currently low. 'I think this is going to be very exciting for people, and hopefully move some folks past this negativity and drama. We want to get people focused on the very positive future that we think WordPress still has.' Although FAIR was created out of frustration with Automattic's control over its backers insist it's not a competing fork. 'When we get up on stage on Friday, literally the words that are going to come out of our mouth are: 'We're offering this code to Automattic, WP Engine, GoDaddy, Newfold—everyone,'' says Marucchi. If widely adopted, the network could allow developers to ship both free and premium versions of plugins in a single signed package—something currently prohibited by the official WordPress repository. 'That opens up innovation,' de Valk says, 'making it easier to build businesses around plugins and to provide good user experiences.' Still, Hubbard emphasizes that fragmentation of WordPress's core infrastructure could create more problems than it solves—disrupting update processes, inflating server loads, and breaking plugin telemetry used for ensuring compatibility. 'If this work leads to improvements like signed updates or better fallback systems, we're open to that,' she says. 'But it has to be done with the same long-term care that got us here.' The FAIR repository is already live on GitHub and accepting contributions. Whether Automattic will participate remains uncertain; regardless, the project team plans to move forward. 'You're dealing with a community that has had some trust challenges in the past, and they're looking for stability,' says Dolan. 'They're looking for neutrality. They have business that they want to get done.'
