Colbert capped a dominant season with his third Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association titles. At 60-1 on the year, his only loss came at National Preps, where he finished as the 215-pound runner-up. The Army commit also won his division at December's Beast of the East tournament and was named upperweight outstanding wrestler at the VISAA state tournament.

'Graterol underwent surgery after the World Series to repair the labrum in his right shoulder. It's a major procedure with a long timetable for recovery, and Graterol was not expected to pitch this year before the All-Star break. Unsurprisingly, the Dodgers placed Graterol on the injured list in March. Although Graterol had reported to the Dodgers' Camelback Ranch complex in Arizona to begin his rehab, manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday the pitcher has not been cleared to begin a throwing program. Now, Roberts said, it appears unlikely Graterol will have enough time to pitch in 2025,' SI's JP Hoornstra reported. There is some bullpen help on the way, but it's not all encouraging. Michael Kopech is currently on a rehab assignment, though his recent outing was far from promising. Charged with 3 runs in 2/3 IP. 24 pitches only 10 strikes,' Dodgers beat writer Bill Plunkett wrote. Despite the bullpen issues, there were positive signs during the Padres series. After the sweep, former Lakers star Magic Johnson gave a shoutout to reliever Alex Vesia. 'Mookie Betts hit the game winning home run today as my Dodgers swept the Padres and took a two-game lead in the Division. Freddie Freeman and Andy Pages added home runs in today's 5-4 victory and Alex Vesia did great in relief,' Johnson posted. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Johnson's shoutout to Vesia highlighted a rare bright spot in a bullpen that has struggled lately. Vesia appeared twice over the weekend, throwing nearly two innings in relief. For both Vesia and the Dodgers, this series could mark a much-needed turning point in what's been a shaky stretch for the bullpen.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Cal Raleigh autographed a toilet seat for one fan, along with the scores of baseballs and other paraphernalia 'The Big Dumper' signed for shrieking Little Leaguers. Raleigh gave the kids a real treat hours later. The Seattle Mariners slugger socked his 47th homer of the season to boost his major league lead and put him within striking distance of the season homer record for catchers set by Kansas City's Salvador Perez. 'He continues to swing a really hot bat,' Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. 'I don't think I'll ever get tired of that.' Raleigh's two-run shot in the seventh inning sent hundreds of Little Leaguers from around the globe cheering in delight to see one of the brightest stars in Sunday's MLB Little League Classic go deep. It didn't help the Mariners much in defeat. The New York Mets beat the Mariners 7-3 and won the last two games of the three-game set. The Mariners are still in the thick of the AL wild-card race and hope to gain ground when they head Monday to Philadelphia for the start of a three-game series. Raleigh could make catching history in Philly. Perez hit 48 homers for the Royals in 2021. 'I think it's been an incredible season for him,' Wilson said. 'But I think we knew what's in there. He's done a great job of bringing it out.' Raleigh put more than his prodigious power on display in the home of youth baseball's biggest weeks of the summer. Raleigh's chest protector featured a baseball card design of Mariners players and coaches from when they were kids. He breezed through the pregame clubhouse in a 'Little Dumper' T-shirt gifted by some of the Little Leaguers. 'You grow up wanting to come here as a kid. Get to do it as an adult now,' Raleigh told MLB Network before the game. 'It's really fun. Excited to meet the kids and hang out.' Raleigh power was always evident. He hit 27 homers in 2022, 30 in 2023 and 34 last season. Now he's on pace to easily top 50 homers and maybe more. There are only five other players in big league history who have hit at least 40 homers while primarily playing catcher: Perez, Johnny Bench (twice), Roy Campanella, Todd Hundley and Mike Piazza (twice). Bench, Campanella and Piazza are Hall of Famers. 'He's a guy that we knew all along coming up in the minor leagues that he had a pretty high ceiling,' Wilson said. 'What he does behind the plate and what he does now at the plate has been unbelievable. He's carried the weight of both of those things and has done it very well.' A first-time All-Star at age 28, Raleigh burst through on the national scene when he won the All-Star Home Run Derby . He became the first switch-hitter and first catcher to win the title. He's the second Mariners player to take the title after three-time winner Ken Griffey Jr. Raleigh's homer Sunday also gave him 102 RBIs this season. He's the first catcher to record back-to-back 100 RBI seasons since Piazza and and the first American League catcher to reach that feat since Thurman Munson. Even more milestones await. "You can't replace a Derrick Rose, man. Let's be honest," Boozer said. "This guy was one in a million, one in a lifetime, to be honest. If he doesn't get hurt, he retires with three or four championships and obviously first ballot Hall of Famer. That's how much influence he had on the game of basketball and that also speaks to his talent level." Boozer was something of a consolation prize free agent signing for the Bulls in 2010, when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and likely Joe Johnson all signed elsewhere. A prolific post scorer in his day (he didn't have much of a jumper beyond the arc, but in his era that wasn't a dealbreaker yet), Boozer was a consistent double-double machine — although he never matched his All-Star prime with the Utah Jazz while in town. Chicago ultimately amnestied him in the summer of 2014. Across his four seasons with the Bulls, Boozer averaged 15.5 points on 49.1 percent shooting from the floor and 72.4 percent shooting from the foul line, 9.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 0.8 steals a night. "Think about his career, right?" Boozer added. "He's from Chicago, No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. Rookie of the Year that year. Second year, becomes an All-Star. Third year, becomes the MVP...
