President Trump issues stern warning to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky as European leaders prepare to fly to Washington
Taking to Truth Social on Sunday local time, Mr Trump said that the war in Ukraine could end immediately if Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to a ceasefire deal.
He also blasted the US media and the Democrats for criticising Saturday's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, in which Putin was treated to a military flypast and a red carpet.
'President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight," Mr Trump said.
"Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!"
He also praised European leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Olaf Schulz, for making the trip with President Zelensky to Washington DC.
'Big day at the White House tomorrow. Never had so many European Leaders at one time. My great honour to host them!!!" he said in another post.
In a separate post, President Trump blasted the Democratic Party and the US media for their criticism of the talks with Russia.
"The Fake News has been saying for 3 days that I suffered a 'major defeat' by allowing President Vladimir Putin of Russia to have a major Summit in the United States," Trump said in another post. "Actually, he would have loved doing the meeting anywhere else but the U.S., and the Fake News knows this. It was a major point of contention! If we had the Summit elsewhere, the Democrat run, and controlled media would have said what a terrible thing THAT was.' President Trump posted.
During a press conference with Ursula Von De Lyons, President of the European Commission, in Brussels on Sunday, President Zelensky reiterated his gratitude to the United States after trusted Trump envoy Steve Witkoff said the US would be willing to guarantee security of Ukraine.
'Security guarantees as a result of our joint work must be truly very practical and provide protection on land, in the air, and at sea, and must also be developed with Europe's participation," President Zelensky said.

‘You look fabulous in that suit': The funny moment Zelensky won over Trump
Washington: Getting Donald Trump to laugh is no mean feat. A smile, sure. But genuine laughter, rare. Of all people, Volodymyr Zelensky made it happen. The Ukrainian president returned to the scene of the crime – that disastrous February meeting – and although his relationship with his US counterpart has improved markedly since then, there was no guarantee he would escape another dressing down. This time, he came prepared. He began by flattering Trump – thanking him for his efforts to end the war, and thanking his wife, Melania, for the letter she wrote to Putin about the plight of children impacted by conflict. Zelensky also handed over a letter from his own wife addressed to the first lady. He also dressed for the occasion. Last time, he was mocked by Trump from the moment they shook hands, with the US president sarcastically remarking 'he's all dressed up today' when Zelensky emerged from his car in a military-style black sweatshirt. It's easily forgotten that in that February encounter, Zelensky faced not only a combative US delegation but an occasionally hostile American press pack, including Brian Glenn of Real America's Voice, a right-wing channel. Glenn had also grilled Zelensky about his lack of suit-and-tie. Loading This time, Glenn was conciliatory. 'President Zelensky, you look fabulous in that suit,' he said. Trump agreed and pointed out Glenn was the reporter who had chastised Zelensky last time. 'I remember,' the Ukrainian leader said. Then, just when you thought he might still harbour a grudge, he turned his attention to Glenn and joked: 'You are in the same suit. I changed, you are not.' Everyone found it funny, including Trump. After all, English may not be his first language, but Zelensky was a comedian before going into politics.

Australia news LIVE: Trump to call Putin after meeting Zelensky at White House; Hamas accepts Arab-mediated ceasefire; economic roundtable to begin
Latest posts Latest posts 6.50am Trump offers security guarantee to Ukraine US President Donald Trump signalled he would offer security guarantees to Ukraine to keep the peace once an agreement is struck with Russia, a vital component for European leaders concerned about future conflicts in Ukraine or elsewhere in Europe following the conclusion of the war. Speaking to media in the Oval Office, Trump said: 'We're going to work with Ukraine. We're going to work with everybody, and we're going to make sure that if there's peace, the peace is going to stay long-term. This is very long-term. We're not talking about a two-year peace, and then we end up in this mess again.' Trump stopped short of committing US troops to Ukraine, but said it was a matter that would form part of discussions with the high-powered European delegation accompanying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. 6.38am Hamas accepts Arab-mediated ceasefire Hamas has agreed to a 60-day ceasefire proposal with Israel that includes the return of half the hostages held in Gaza and Israel's release of some Palestinian prisoners, an Egyptian official source said. Senior Hamas official Basem Naim confirmed the group's approval on Facebook. Hamas said other Palestinian factions informed mediators of their approval as well. There was no Israeli response to the Hamas proposal itself, but an Israeli official confirmed it was received. Egypt and Qatar have been mediating between the sides with US support. 6.35am What's making news today By Daniel Lo Surdo Hello and welcome to the national news blog. The federal government's three-day economic reform roundtable will begin later today, with government, business and union leaders gathering in Parliament House to discuss measures to boost productivity. Treasurer Jim Chalmers has signalled plans to remove unnecessary regulation stalling building and housing approvals, and said that discussions at the roundtable would shape the federal budgets for the next three years. Hamas has agreed to a 60-day ceasefire proposal with Israel that includes the return of half the hostages held in Gaza and Israel's release of some Palestinian prisoners, an Egyptian official source said. Israel is yet to respond to the Hamas proposal, but an Israeli source confirmed it's been received. Egypt and Qatar have been mediating between both sides with US support.
