Actor Emma Lung has starred in films alongside some of the industry's biggest names, including Hugo Weaving and Brian Cox. The 43-year-old, who stars opposite Asher Keddie in streaming series Strife, also discusses how she and her now husband had a second chance at love.
My grandfather, James, was born in Guangzhou [China]. He moved to Papua New Guinea after he finished high school. From there, he moved to Sydney, where he met my grandmother, Colleen. Together, they had seven children.
I called my grandfather Y éye (Mandarin for paternal grandfather). I didn't know him for a lot of my early life, as our family lived in Tokyo, where my father, Gary, and mother, Heather, taught English. But when we returned to Sydney, I knew him as a gentle and wise man.
I couldn't ask for a more loving father. He's been in my corner since day one and continues to be. There's really nothing he wouldn't do for me. Dad is gregarious, hilarious and impatient. He's also an absolute cinephile, and so I grew up watching Woody Allen and Rob Reiner and all the films of the 1970s. From him, I've inherited my sense of curiosity, adventure and tenacity – probably my loudmouth tendencies, too.
My teenage celebrity crush was River Phoenix. I still can barely say his name without my heart missing a beat.
My first serious relationship came when I was 13. I'd met Thorald at [Sydney's] Newtown School of Performing Arts. When I was 15, I managed to convince my parents to let me attend an acting school in New York for the last term of year 10, and so I moved there with Thorald and his mum.
When I came back, I sent a video audition to the Professional Performing Arts School of Manhattan. I got accepted, and so I completed my final year of drama school in New York. When Thorald and I came back to Australia, he wanted to return [to New York]. I wasn't ready for that, and six months or so later, we split up. We're still very much in touch. My 10-year-old son, Marlowe, and his first child were born six hours apart.
I was 19 when I appeared with Hugo Weaving in Peaches. The love scenes were really intense, but there was no sort of worry as Hugo is the most kind and gentle soul. Looking back, it would have been extremely hard for him, too, as he had a daughter around 10 years younger than me. But you'd be hard-pressed to find too many actors as professional as him.

Russell Brand pleads not guilty to charges of rape and sexual assault in London court

London: Actor and comedian Russell Brand pleaded not guilty in a London court on Friday to rape and sexual assault charges involving four women dating back more than 25 years. Brand, who turns 50 next week, denied two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. He said 'not guilty' after each charge was read in Southwark Crown Court. His trial was scheduled for June 3, 2026, and is expected to last four to five weeks. Prosecutors said the offences took place between 1999 and 2005 – one in the English seaside town of Bournemouth and the other three in London. Brand did not speak to reporters as he arrived at court wearing dark sunglasses, a suit jacket, a black collared shirt open below his chest, and black jeans. Loading Brand is accused of raping a woman at a hotel room in Bournemouth when she attended a 1999 Labour Party conference and met him at an event where he was performing. The woman alleged that Brand stripped while she was in the bathroom and when she returned to the room he pushed her on the bed, removed her underwear and raped her. A second woman said Brand grabbed her forearm and attempted to drag her into a men's toilet at a television station in London in 2001. The third accuser was a television employee who met Brand at a birthday party in a bar in 2004, where he allegedly grabbed her breasts before pulling her into a toilet and forcing her to perform oral sex.

Actor and reality star Paul Danan's cause of death revealed by coroner, history of addiction detailed

Reality TV and soap star Paul Danan was found unresponsive on his sofa with the TV still on, after his friends raised the alarm when they couldn't reach him for two days. An inquest has heard the 46 year old, former Hollyoaks and Love Island star took a combination of drugs before being discovered at his Bristol, UK apartment on January 15. They used a ladder to look through his window before a neighbour entered and found him. The inquest heard his death was caused by 'combined toxicity' of drugs, including heroin, methadone, cocaine, and prescription medication. Coroner Debbie Rookes ruled his death as misadventure, stating she was certain he did not intend to end his life. 'Paul Danan was clearly much loved and is very much missed,' Ms Rookes said. 'Mr Danan had a long history of drug misuse and struggles with his mental health. His death was caused by a combination of drugs, both prescription and illicit.' Paul's mother, Beverley Danan, paid tribute in a statement read to the court: 'Paul helped so many people from all walks of life but just couldn't help himself in the same way. His smiling face and love of life will always be remembered.' Police confirmed they were called to his home and that his death was not being treated as suspicious. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene. Paul had been open about his struggles, revealing he'd been to rehab 17 times and battled addiction for years. He had suffered a motorbike accident in 2010, which led to painkiller dependency and further challenges. He once said: 'I've had 17 stints in rehab. They do work. They're amazing. They've saved my life many times but it's maintenance and it's about sustaining that recovery and not putting anything before that recovery - even my little boy, who I love to death.' He also shared how his mother had saved his life after a heroin overdose: 'My mum found me in my bed and I was making these weird noises and choking on my last breath. The ambulance was down the road thankfully, but by the time they arrived I was dead and they brought me back to life.' Paul had been due in court on drug charges the day after he was found. He was a father to nine-year-old DeNiro. Tributes poured in after his death. American TV personality, Calum Best, described him as 'one of the funniest, kindest, and most authentic people I've known,' while English TV show host, Vanessa Feltz, called him a 'fantastically gifted actor.' Actor Adam Deacon also remembered him as a 'genuinely kind and compassionate person.' Paul was laid to rest in January, with friends and former co-stars in attendance.
