Air India flight from London descends into chaos after 'five passengers and two crew fall ill with food poisoning'

Daily Mail11 hours ago

At least seven passengers and crew fell ill during a nine-hour Air India flight from London amid fears of food poisoning.
Five holidaymakers and two cabin crew members reported feeling nauseous and dizzy as flight AI-130 travelled to Mumbai on Monday.
Earlier eyewitness reports suggested the number was higher, with as many as 11 people, including six crew, feeling unwell during the journey.
The incident comes just days after a deadly Air India crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, which is still under investigation.
Air India later confirmed: 'On board flight AI-130 from London Heathrow to Mumbai, five passengers and two crew reported feeling dizzy and nauseous during different phases of the flight.
'Our medical experts were prepared to offer prompt medical aid after the airplane safely touched down in Mumbai.
'Two passengers and two cabin staff members who were still feeling ill after landing were brought to the hospital room for additional testing before being released.
'We have informed the regulator and are looking into the incident.'

The Boeing 777 landed safely in Mumbai, where medical teams had been put on standby.
Initial theories about a cabin pressurisation issue, which can lead to hypoxia, were dismissed as oxygen masks were not deployed during the flight.
An expert familiar with the situation noted food poisoning is now considered a more plausible cause for the symptoms of nausea and dizziness experienced by those affected.
Both pilots did not fall unwell however - likely because standard aviation safety practices include serving the commander and first officer food that has been prepared in separate kitchens to the rest of the flight as a way to mitigate such risks.
The incident comes in the wake of other serious events that have rocked the international airline.
Air India is continuing to probe what caused the tragic crash of Gatwick-bound Flight 171, which killed 229 passengers and 12 crew members, with only one passenger surviving.
Brit Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who was sitting in seat 11A, said it was a 'miracle' he survived the disaster that killed 279 people.

Multiple passengers and crew fall ill on Air India flight from London

Seven people fell ill 35,000 feet in the air on an Air India flight from London to Mumbai, reporting feeling dizzy and nauseous. Flight AI130 from London Heathrow to Mumbai had taken off on Monday 23 June when some passengers and crew began to feel ill. During the nine-hour flight, five passengers and two crew members said they were experiencing symptoms such as dizziness and nausea. After the Boeing 777 had landed, two passengers and two crew members continued to feel ill. An Air India spokesperson confirmed the incident to The Independent: 'On board flight AI130 from London Heathrow to Mumbai, five passengers and two crew reported feeling dizzy and nauseous during different phases of the flight. 'The flight landed safely in Mumbai, where our medical teams were ready to provide immediate medical assistance. 'After landing, two passengers and two cabin crew, who continued to feel unwell, were taken to the medical room for further examination and were later discharged. 'We are investigating the incident and have duly notified the regulator.' Another Air India flight from the UK headed to New Delhi was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Sunday due to a bomb threat. The airline confirmed that its flight had received a bomb threat, so it decided to divert the flight to Riyadh to undergo security checks. 'The inconvenience caused to our passengers due to this unforeseen disruption is sincerely regretted,' an Air India spokesperson said. 'Alternative arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to their destinations.' Following the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad that killed over 200 people, Air India has axed 15 per cent of its international wide-bodied schedule over the next few weeks to undergo enhanced safety checks on its fleet.

Let's talk about Lime bikes – yes, those green bikes that are cluttering up the pavements in cities like London, Nottingham and Manchester. Even Dame is fed up. Just last weekend, the 92-year-old actress took to Instagram to call out the 'loutish' behaviour of Lime bike users by sharing a photo of herself standing in front of dozens of seemingly abandoned e-bikes blocking the footpath. Then there are the not-so-silly safety concerns. London hospitals have seen a surge in people being admitted to A&E with what orthopedic surgeons are calling 'Lime bike leg', or broken legs caused by the hire e-bike, which weighs over 30kg, landing on the rider during a fall. And it's not just riders who are sustaining injuries – nearly everyone I know has had a run-in with a Lime bike.

Airplane passenger apologizes for creating a 'stink' with severe diarrhea and vomiting on a woman

A traveler who suffered an explosive bout of gastroenteritis on a flight has publicly apologized to his fellow passengers for creating a 'stink' and vomiting on a woman. The man was flying with Batik Air Malaysia from Jakarta, Indonesia, to Perth, Australia, on Sunday when his illness suddenly hit. He said he had begun to feel sick after eating dragon fruit at his hotel before boarding the four-and-a-half-hour flight. He wrote on Reddit: 'I want to apologize to you all for my uncontrollable gastroenteritis. 'I'm sorry for the stink. My diarrhea was dreadful, but I managed to get to the toilet on time, each time. 'Thank you for your understanding and kindness by giving me some paracetamol. I was terribly embarrassed. Thank you to the man sitting next to me in the opposite aisle seat, you were all so understanding.' It wasn't only the stench that annoyed his fellow flyers. He added: 'I am so sorry to the lady who was sitting next to me and I vomited all over you. I missed the vomit bag.' Gastroenteritis, commonly known as 'gastro' or 'stomach flu', is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines caused by various factors like viruses, bacteria, or parasites. It typically leads to diarrhea and vomiting, which in turn can lead to dehydration. The vast majority of those on Reddit were sympathetic towards the man who had to deal with his illness in a confined space. One wrote: 'Gastro is a nightmare to deal with in flight. I once dealt with it ripping through economy on a flight to the U.S. It was awful, and we ran out of everything. 'People were vomiting into their hands and eventually we gave up trying to segregate anyone as it was obvious it was out of control. 'Three of the crew ended up with it as well. We basically shoved one crew into the cockpit with the bio gear and told her to only leave to get the pilots food and drink.' Another wrote: 'This is a nightmare situation. So sorry you had to go through that in such a crowded space with no way out.' One Redditor claiming to be a passenger on the flight chimed in. They wrote: 'Hey mate, met you at the smoking section just outside pickup when you were heading off to look for your car. 'I kept thinking about what you said after I got home. Honestly, I don't know if I would've reacted with the same grace as that lady in the moment. 'I reckon I probably would've flipped out, not from anger, just from the heat of the moment.' The gastroenteritis victim went on to say the vomiting did not last long, but after getting home he still had to rush to the toilet a few times during the night. One social media user asked why the man would let the world know his embarrassing story. They wrote: 'Not even God himself could beat this information out of me. Glad the flight was okay and people were understanding.'
