Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon leading group to buy Portland Trail Blazers

Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon and a group of investors have reached a tentative agreement to buy the NBA team the Portland Trail Blazers.
Why it matters: The deal — reportedly valued at more than $4 billion, according to ESPN — raises questions about the feasibility of Dundon's plans to submit a bid to bring a Major League Baseball team to Raleigh, given the large transaction price.
Driving the news: The Carolina Hurricanes confirmed that Dundon was in the process of buying the Trail Blazers on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that the potential ownership group includes some Portland-area investors, and the goal is to keep the team in Oregon.
Former owner of the Trail Blazers and Seattle Seahawks Paul Allen, the Microsoft cofounder who died in 2018, had in his will a stipulation that his teams be sold, according to Sportico, which first reported the Trail Blazers sale to Dundon.
What they're saying: Dundon is "excited about the opportunity" to acquire the Trail Blazers, a spokesperson for the Hurricanes told Axios.
"This will not impact the Carolina Hurricanes, and Tom still wants to bring Major League Baseball to North Carolina," the spokesperson added.
Zoom in: Dundon has invested significantly in the Hurricanes since buying the team for $420 million in 2018, and his connections are shaping development across the region.
He overhauled the Canes' front office and helped lead the team to seven-straight playoff appearances.
Dundon and Dallas-based Pacific Elm Properties are investing $1 billion into turning Lenovo Center's parking lots into an entertainment and mixed-use destination.
To land those investments from Dundon, however, Raleigh and Wake County committed hundreds of millions of dollars toward renovating Lenovo Center.
Pacific Elm — which is part of Dundon Capital Partners, an investment firm Dundon founded — is now proposing an outdoor recreation center at Lake Crabtree Park, hinting at bringing an expansion of the U.S. Whitewater Center to Raleigh.

Japan's Iwai grabs lead at LPGA Portland Classic

Japanese rookie Akie Iwai fired a eight-under par 64 to seize a two-stroke lead after Saturday's third round of the LPGA Portland Classic. The 23-year-old from Saitama, seeking her first LPGA victory, made seven birdies and an eagle against a lone bogey to stand on 18-under 198 after 54 holes at Edgewater Country Club. Australia's Grace Kim, who captured her first major title at the Evian Championship, made a stunning eagle at the 17th, holing out from 156 yards from the fairway rough to shoot 67 and grab second on 200. World number 29 Iwai, an LPGA runner-up this year at Thailand and the LA Championship, has won six times on the Japan Tour. "After I made the eagle at five, I had many birdie chances, so good tempo," Iwai said. "My style is aggressive. No change this week. Aim to the pin. Every shot. Every hole." That was apparent at the 18th hole, where she dropped her approaches inches from the hole and tapped in for her fourth birdie on the back nine. After answering a bogey at the par-three second hole with a birdie at the third, Iwai eagled the par-five fifth followed by back-to-back birdies at six and the par-five seventh. She began the back nine with birdies at the par-five 10th and 12th holes and added another at the par-three 13th to reach 17-under and lead by three strokes. Kim went four-under over the last five holes to charge into the second with birdies at 14 and 15 and her eagle at 17 the shot of the round. She looked away after the ball landed in the rough, not seeing it bounce onto the green, roll down a slope and into the hole for an eagle. "I leaked my driver a little right," Kim said. "I thought I was going to be in the rough, which it was, and I was trying to see if I could get a drop. I wasn't entirely over the sprinkler head boxes so I knew I just had to hit it. "It leaked right again and I was like, 'Oh please get through the rough,' and somehow it went in the hole so I guess it's a little bit of luck in there." Sweden's Linn Grant took third on 202 with a 65, one stroke ahead of American Gurleen Kaur with India's Aditi Ashok and American Gina Kim on 204. "I had a good round out there," Grant said. "Tried to go out and just be, I wouldn't say happy, but just accepting of whatever today would bring. I played very mature and just had a lot of fun." Waymo expands lead over Tesla with launch of robotaxi services in new US cities: 'The team is testing across more than 10 cities this year'

With Tesla beginning testing of its robotaxi service this summer near the company headquarters in Texas, the current leader in that area, Waymo, is looking to extend its lead by opening service nearby in the Lone Star State. What's happening? According to Forbes, Waymo is planning to open autonomous driving services in Dallas starting next year. One of the many companies under the umbrella of Google's parent company, Alphabet, Waymo has been the industry leader in self-driving vehicles pretty much from the jump. Waymo currently operates fully in five cities: San Francisco, Atlanta, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin — the latter being where Tesla has debuted its public testing. The Google-affiliated company is also testing in another 10 cities, including New York City and Philadelphia. "The Waymo driver has now autonomously driven over 100 million miles on public roads, and the team is testing across more than 10 cities this year, including New York and Philadelphia," Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in July. "We hope to serve riders in all 10 in the future." Waymo is also testing in Washington, D.C.; Houston; Miami; San Antonio; San Diego; Nashville, Tennessee; Boston; and Tokyo. The company will partner with rental company Avis for maintenance and charging of its vehicles in Dallas. Why is Waymo's expansion important? Self-driving cars have long been touted as the next frontier in automotive advancement, and multiple companies are currently in the mix to get a foothold in that market. Volkswagen and Tesla are two of the biggest names trying to get a leg up, but everyone has a lot of catching up to do with Waymo. While Volkswagen isn't looking to take over the market and has opted to partner with municipalities in its quest to get a chunk of the robotaxi pie, Tesla has long been seen as Waymo's biggest competitor. However, Elon Musk's company has gotten off to a slow start with its program and is currently only cleared for testing in a limited section of Austin. Those tests have been progressing slowly, with a fair number of concerning incidents of near-misses in traffic. That said, Waymo has had its own safety issues at times in its development, including a recall earlier this year connected to glitches causing the detection to miss thin objects like chains and gates. That Waymo is continuing to grow while Tesla is still in its early stages is a troubling sign for the Musk-run EV manufacturer, but it's also important to note that Waymo got to market earlier — hitting the stage Tesla is in back in 2021 in San Francisco — and Tesla appears to be giving its engineering team time to get things right. What's being done about Waymo's growth? Musk and Tesla are betting big on their self-driving services, despite having a lot of ground to make up in the coming months and years.
