The King of Budget Travel Inches Closer to a €100-Million Bonus

Bloomberg19-05-2025

Ryanair Holdings Plc 's relentless focus on rock-bottom fares and no-frills air travel is giving Chief Executive Officer Michael O'Leary his best chance yet at securing a lavish extravagance in the form of a €100-million ($112 million) bonus.
O'Leary can qualify for the mega payout if the stock of Europe's biggest budget carrier remains at or above €21 for 28 calendar days. So far, the shares have managed that level for 18 consecutive days, the longest streak yet since the countdown started.

The BMW 5 Series Is Dominating In Europe Right Now

Mercedes-Benz and BMW unveiled the current E-Class and 5 Series within a month of each other in 2023. Buyers are clearly favoring one over the other so far this year, and those in Stuttgart have to be a bit disappointed with the trend. The 5 Series is outselling the E-Class and its other rivals by a wide margin. Automotive News Europe reported on numbers published by Dataforce that show BMW sold about 5,000 more cars than Mercedes through the first four months of the year. That's despite both models seeing sizeable sales increases compared to the same period in 2024. Sales for the 5 Series and E-Class are up 56 percent and 19 percent, respectively, according to the data. BMW's electric i5 also outsold its other electrified rivals, squeaking past the Audi A6 E-Tron—8,843 versus 7,460 units. Mercedes sold just 3,740 EQE sedans. Shrinking Selection Completely missing from the list is the Jaguar XF, which the automaker stopped building in the middle of 2024 . The brand is undergoing a bold reimagining that will move the automaker upmarket to compete with Bentley, Maybach, and Porsche. Maserati announced it would end the car's production in 2024, leaving buyers with fewer choices, which makes the current iterations of the 5 Series and E-Class even more important to their respective brands as they battle for customers. Swedish Green Steel Maker Mulls IPO to Finance Expansion Plans

Stegra AB, which is building the world's biggest green steel plant in northern Sweden, is doing initial work for an eventual public listing of shares because its expansion plans may need more funding than it can raise privately. The four-year-old startup, on track to start producing the metal by the end of next year, has raised about €6.5 billion ($7.4 billion) so far, one-third equity and two-thirds debt. That will largely be used to get the plant up and running and produce 2.5 million tons a year. A second phase could see Stegra double the production, but would require further substantial fund raising.

Brazil's Gol emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Brazilian discount carrier Gol has exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Gol received $1.9 billion in financing during the 17-month restructuring process and exits bankruptcy with $900 million in liquidity. Abra Group, the owner of Colombia-based Avianca, now controls 80% of Gol stock. The company's shares will be traded on the Brazil stock exchange. Gol is operating six U.S. routes this month, all from secondary Brazilian cities -- four of them to Miami and two to Orlando. The carrier was operating four U.S. routes when it entered Chapter 11 in January 2024, Cirium flight schedule data shows. Gol is the third-largest carrier in Brazil, trailing Azul and Latam. Azul and Gol entered into a nonbinding memorandum of understanding in January to explore a merger that would make them by far the largest airline in Brazil. Azul began its own Chapter 11 restructuring process late last month.
