NSWRL drops women's Origin name amid legal threats from Sydney FC
NSWRL has been forced to drop the name Sky Blues for their women's State of Origin side after threats of legal action were made by A-League's most successful club Sydney FC, who go by the same nickname.
Ahead of Thursday night's series opener at Suncorp Stadium, the former moniker 'Sky Blues' has been dropped from all official NSWRL communications as well as the team's social media channels.
However, the changes weren't made in time to make cut off dates for new kits for this year's series, which were submitted back in November.
The NSW game day jerseys and training kits for staff and players still have the former logo including the words 'Sky Blues' in the crest, which will be worn on Thursday night.
The official change on social media channels and communications was made earlier this year after NSWRL relented to ongoing requests from Sydney FC, despite the difference in sporting codes and teams.
The A-League giant claims the trademarked moniker 'Sky Blues' is a part of the club's intellectual property and branding of their men's, women's and academy teams, as well as a recognisable part of their club culture and fan songs.
It was officially trademarked as the team's nickname a decade ago.
Sydney FC's legal attempts to protect their brand escalated in February and to avoid any further action NSWRL bosses opted for an official shift for their representative side to be known as the NSW Blues women instead.
The new name aligns branding with the men's team, known as the NSW Blues, as well as the Queensland Maroons women's team.
It comes ahead of Thursday night's series opener which is expected to attract a crowd bigger than last year's 25,492 to kick off Magic Round.
The new-look NSW Blues arrived in camp in Brisbane on Saturday, and will train at Ballymore Oval on Monday as they plan to avenge back-to-back series losses.
Coach John Strange has named a brand new 20-person team, including untested halves combination Tiana Penitani and Jesse Southwell, rookie fullback Abbi Church and fellow debutants Jayme Fressard, Ellie Johnston and Jocelyn Kelleher.

Andrew Redmayne's deal to return to Central Coast Mariners now uncertain
Former Socceroos goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne's hopes of rejoining Central Coast Mariners are in jeopardy after an apparent about-face from club owner and chairman Mike Charlesworth. It was announced in April that veteran gloveman Redmayne was parting ways with Sydney FC at the end of the 2024-25 A-League season after eight years with the Sky Blues, having lost his first-team place to Harrison Devenish-Meares. It's understood that soon after the announcement, 36-year-old Redmayne signed a contract with the Mariners, the club where he started his A-League career as a teenager in 2008. Sources close to the cash-strapped Mariners say that Charlesworth approved the deal. However, it now believed that as part of the club's current freeze on signing players, Charlesworth has back-tracked on bringing Redmayne back to Gosford, potentially leaving the experienced gloveman in limbo. A potential lifeline looms for Redmayne if English Championship club Queens Park Rangers commit to buying the Mariners. A decision is expected soon from QPR, although it's understood there is also a consortium of Australian businessmen interested in purchasing a stake in the Mariners on the proviso that Charlesworth retains 40 per cent of the club ownership. Meanwhile, star defender Brian Kaltak, whose departure from the Mariners was confirmed on Thursday, has joined Perth Glory on a multi-year deal. The 31-year-old Vanuatu international, who won two A-League championships and an AFC Cup during his three seasons with Central Coast, said it was 'time to try something new'. 'This a new chapter for me and I'm excited for it,' Kaltak said. 'This move will be good for me and good for my football.' In other A-League news, Macarthur FC has announced the departure of four players – left-back Ivan Vujica, right-back Yianni Nicolaou, and midfielders Danny De Silva and Peter Makrillos.

‘It's felt like home': Tarryn Aiken agrees to new deal with Roosters
Reigning Golden Boot winner Tarryn Aiken has re-signed with the Roosters until the end of the 2027 season in a huge boost for the NRLW heavyweights just a month out from the start of their premiership defence. Aiken has developed into one of the game's elite playmakers for her club, state and country, with the champion playmaker enjoying unprecedented success in 2024 when she won the NRLW title, the State of Origin series with Queensland and the Pacific Championships with Australia. She capped off her dream year with the Golden Boot award and is set for more success after agreeing to a new deal with the Roosters who are one of the teams tipped to go all the way in 2025. 'I'm incredibly proud to extend my time with the Sydney Roosters,' she said. 'I absolutely love this club and this team; it's felt like home since day one. The culture, the people, and the way we push each other to be better every day – it's really special and I'm excited about what the future holds.' John Strange led the Blues to Origin glory over Aiken's Maroons this year, but he's glad he gets to work with her again as the pair chase more success. 'Tarryn is an exceptional talent and a genuine competitor,' he said, with the Roosters to begin their NRLW campaign against the Warriors on July 6. 'She brings professionalism, leadership and a winning mindset to everything she does. We're thrilled to have her recommit to the club, and we're confident she will remain a driving force in our future success.'
