Why Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc miss Austria Grand Prix practice

Metro27-06-2025
Lando Norris' pursuit of the Formula 1 championship will be disrupted today as he will miss first practice for the Austrian Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver has arrived at the Red Bull Ring off the back of colliding with teammate and championship rival Oscar Piastri in Canada.
The crash, which Norris took full responsibility for, knocked him out of the grand prix and leaves him 22 points behind Piastri in the standings as we near the halfway point of the season.
Victory in Austria would go a long way to restoring the Brit's confidence and could even see him retake lead of the championship if Piastri suffers a poor result.
But Norris, as well as Sir Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, will play no part in FP1 on Friday.
As per regulations, each F1 team is obliged to run a rookie driver in each of their cars in a practice session at two grand prix this season.
McLaren have opted to use Austria for one of these runs, with Norris selected to make way on this occasion for rising star Alex Dunne.
The 19-year-old is currently leading the Formula 2 championship and will be the first Irish driver to take part in an F1 session since Ralph Firman in 2003.
'It's an amazing opportunity. I'm really looking forward to getting laps in behind the wheel of the MCL39 and supporting the team with the setup for the race weekend ahead,' Dunne said.
'It's a great step within my development with the McLaren Driver Development Programme, and I'm really excited to join the team trackside.'
Friday, June 27
Practice 1 – 12.30pm
Practice 2 – 4pm
Saturday, June 28
Practice 3 – 11.30am
Qualifying – 3pm
Sunday, June 29
Race – 2pm
Ferrari have confirmed that Leclerc will be replaced by Swedish F2 star Dino Beganovic, as was the case at the Bahrain Grand Prix in April.
Norris and Leclerc will be back behind the wheel for the rest of the weekend, starting with the second practice session later today.
Following his shocking crash with George Russell in Spain, Max Verstappen is on the verge of a one race ban from Formula 1. More Trending
The reigning champion has picked up 11 points on his superlicence in the last 12 months, with just one more needed to earn a suspension.
The Red Bull star avoided trouble in Canada but will need to do so again in Austria or he will be suspended for the British Grand Prix next weekend.
Thankfully for Verstappen, two of his current penalty points expire on Monday, which will lessen his chances of picking up a ban from that point onwards.

Max Verstappen spotted on Mercedes F1 chief Toto Wolff's yacht after Red Bull decision

Images which circulated a few weeks ago suggesting Toto Wolff had visited Max Verstappen's private plane were fakes, but new shots of them on a yacht together are the real deal Max Verstappen was spotted paying a visit to Toto Wolff on the Mercedes chief's yacht this week. Both have spent time off the coast of Sardinia on holiday during the summer break in the Formula 1 season. ‌ It is not the first time that there have been suggestions that the two have met in secret while spending time away from the race track. It was only a few weeks ago that images circulated on social media supposedly showing Wolff stepping onto Verstappen's private plane, though it quickly became clear that those photos had been faked. ‌ However, new images have now emerged showing the two of them together on a luxury yacht. One of them shows Verstappen, topless and wearing a white towel with dark stripes on his lower half, stood next to Wolff dressed head-to-toe in white, in conversation and laughing. ‌ It is understood that these images are genuine and that Verstappen and Wolff have indeed met while holidaying together close to the Mediterranean island. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has also been spending some time in the area, though has not been pictured with Verstappen or Wolff. The meeting of the two comes after months of speculation that Verstappen could quit his Red Bull team to join Wolff's Mercedes outfit. The Austrian is a known admirer of the Dutchman, having tried but failed to sign him as a promising teenager long before he went on to become a four-time F1 champion. Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, though it is an open secret that his deal contains performance clauses which, if not met, would allow him to leave early. One such clause was active this year, but expired with the start of the break and was not triggered. Verstappen confirmed ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this month that he would stick with Red Bull for the 2026 season. But that only came after he had already amassed enough points to make it mathematically certain that he could not drop below third place in the championship before the summer break. It has been suggested that he would have needed to be fourth or lower in the standings for that clause to become active. Regardless, it is understood that the 27-year-old was not seriously considering leaving Red Bull this year, preferring to bide his time and wait to see what the balance of power on the grid looks like next year when new engine and aerodynamic design regulations come into force. ‌ In the meantime, though neither has a Mercedes contract for 2026 yet, the team is expected to retain its current line-up consisting of team leader George Russell and rookie starlet Kimi Antonelli. But it will be interesting to see what length of contract is agreed with both of them, given both are pushing for long-term extensions but Mercedes want to keep their options open in case Verstappen does become available next year. The Dutchman had made it clear he does not plan to stay in F1 for as long as many others before him have, and will want to spent as much times as possible in the quickest car he can find. He has managed to win two Grands Prix this year despite Red Bull's drop in competitiveness, but could have his head turned if they fall out of contention for victories altogether next year.

Hidden Lewis Hamilton contract clause comes to light as Ferrari left powerless

A report from Italy claims Lewis Hamilton holds a unilateral power thanks to the fine print with his Ferrari contract which could be the deciding factor in how long his stay with the Scuderia will be Lewis Hamilton has complete control over whether or not his Ferrari career will end after the 2026 season. That is according to a report in Italy which claims the Scuderia has no power to stop the British driver from extending his stay into the 2027 campaign, even if they were to decide to go in a different direction. ‌ It has been a tough adjustment for the seven-time Formula 1 champion since making the switch. He joined Ferrari in the hope of having a better chance of challenging for silverware than he feared he might get if he stuck with the Mercedes outfit he represented with distinction for more than a decade. ‌ But there have been few highlights so far in a Ferrari shirt. The Hungarian Grand Prix last time out was a particular low point, as he failed to score a point for the first time all year, finishing 12th after a poor qualifying, following which he declared himself "useless". ‌ Hamilton is sixth in the drivers' standings, just one place below team-mate Charles Leclerc but 42 points behind the Monegasque who has managed five Grand Prix podiums so far in 2025, while his British partner has yet to experience that since switching to Ferrari. He turns 41 in January and it is clear that Hamilton is in the twilight of his remarkable F1 career. As it stands, the Ferrari contract he signed expires in 2026, though it has long been understood that his £50million-per-year deal contains an option to extend that stay for another season beyond that. But that is not something that, according to the Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, Ferrari can trigger themselves. The newspaper claims Hamilton is the one who holds the unilateral power to decide whether or not he will remain in that seat in 2027. It is reported that the Brit was able to get such a clause inserted into his deal because of the commercial benefits his presence brings to the team and to Ferrari as a wider organisation. The company's stock price rocketed on the day the news broke that the F1 legend would be joining. Leclerc also has a long-term contract, signed last year, which is expected to keep him tied to Ferrari until 2029. That means the Scuderia has very little wiggle room over its driver line-up for the next three years at least, given the power Hamilton wields in regards to his own future. As for Hamilton's long-term successor, Ferrari believe they already have a star of the future on the books. Oliver Bearman is being somewhat groomed as a Ferrari driver of the future, being retained as an affiliated racer despite being signed to customer team Haas. But the decision over when that might happen, it seems, rests with Hamilton. Though the seven-time champion is very self-aware and is unlikely to prolong his Ferrari career if he does come to the conclusion that he is no longer at the peak of his powers.

Moses Itauma's trainer makes 'dog fight' admission ahead of Dillian Whyte fight

Itauma faces the toughest test of his career on Saturday night, but the Brit's coach is fully confident his star pupil can get the job done Moses Itauma's trainer Ben Davison admits the heavyweight star has got it in his locker to emerge victorious should the Dillian Whyte clash descend into a dog fight. ‌ The 20-year-old faces the toughest test of his career so far against Whyte - a heavyweight veteran - on Saturday night in the Middle East. The Brit is a real superstar in the making after announcing himself on the world stage back in 2024 after brutally knocking out Mariusz Wach. ‌ Itauma has since gone on to defeat Demsey McKean and Mike Balogun - both via knockout. Both Oleksandr Usyk and Lennox Lewis have backed the young heavyweight contender to achieve great things. With just 12 fights under his belt, it is only a matter of time before he goes head-to-head with some of the top names at heavyweight. ‌ Despite all the hype, he is still yet to be tested inside the squared-circle. Many within the boxing community wonder how Itauma would fare when dragged into deep waters. But his trainer, Davision, believes his pupil is capable of thriving under real pressure in the ring. Itauma was seen showing off his incredible hand speed at the open workouts on Wednesday evening in Saudi Arabia. Speaking on the DAZN broadcast, Davison broke down Whyte's threat to his man. "Moses Itauma is not the type of fighter where we have to bank on people catching people at the right time. "He is good enough to mix with any of them at any point, and we have prepared for Dillian to turn up... the best Dillian possible, and if we haven't done, it's too late now." When pressed by the punditry team what problems Whyte brings, Davison replied: "It is his experience. He is a big, strong guy. Plenty of heart. Can punch. He brings all of those things to the table and that does not change, no matter what condition he turns up in. "Like I say, people keep talking about 'if it goes into a dog fight...' I have seen Moses. The young lad can fight up close as well, and you have got to have that in your locker. If you are going to mix in at this level, you have got to have that in the locker and he has got that in the locker. If the fight does go that why, I would not be shocked for it to still go as we expect. ‌ Ahead of the clash, Itauma revealed Davison helped him fully restore his love for the sport of boxing. 'Being in the ring (sparring) with all these heavyweights Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce, Tyson Fury, Lawrence Okolie, I know that there are levels to boxing and I just felt like I was unable to learn any more,' Itauma said. The Brit admits that, under the guidance of Davison, he found a new side to the sport. 'I don't want to disrespect any of the coaches I tried or did work with. I love and respect them, but with Ben, he taught me a different side to boxing," he continued. 'He taught me there is more to boxing than punch, punch, get punched, punch back, punch, punch, punch. There is actually a whole chess game to this.' When is Moses Itauma vs Dillian Whyte? The 'Esports World Cup Fight Week: Moses Itauma vs Dillian Whyte' will take place on Saturday, August 16. The main undercard is due to get underway at around 5:45 pm UK time (12:45 pm ET / 9:45 am PT). The main event ringwalks will likely take place at around 10:20pm UK time (5:20 pm ET / 2:20 pm PT). All of the action will be streamed live on DAZN Pay Per-View. The event is priced at £19.99 in the United Kingdom, $49.99 in the United States, €19.99 in Europe and $49.95 in Australia.
