Push to reduce wait times
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 15,000 patients are currently on the waiting list for various elective surgeries at government hospitals, says the Health Ministry.
Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad ( pic ) said the ministry acknowledged the prolonged waiting periods.
He assured that emergency operations are carried out promptly without compromising patient safety.
'A total of 9,233 patients are currently waiting for cataract surgeries at 56 hospitals nationwide, with an average waiting period of three months.
'Meanwhile, 2,661 patients await procedures related to kidney stones, such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy and retrograde intrarenal surgery, with an average waiting period of 11 months available at 13 hospitals with resident urology surgical specialists,' he said.
He was responding to a question by Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong), who had asked for the number of patients on the waiting list and the average waiting period.
Dzulkefly said 2,293 patients are in line for major cardiothoracic surgeries, including coronary artery bypass graft and heart valve surgeries, which have a waiting period of seven months.
'The paediatric cardiothoracic surgeries face an even longer delay, with 603 elective cases pending and an average waiting time of 21 months,' he added.
To address these lengthy waiting periods, the Health Ministry has implemented several initiatives, Dzulkefly revealed.
'These include expanding the cluster hospital concept and deploying surgical specialists to more hospitals lacking resident experts to initiate services.
'Furthermore, collaborations between agencies and public-private partnerships are being pursued to reduce surgical waiting times,' he said while highlighting the establishment of the MAIWP-Hospital Selayang Cataract Surgery Centre, a collaboration between the ministry and Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council.
He also said the Health Services Outsourcing Programme is part of this effort to enhance access and expedite surgical treatment for patients in need.
'Such measures are expected to improve access and expedite surgical treatment for patients who require it,' he added.

Mageswary warned that unregistered practitioners or those working without a valid APC could face legal consequences. 'Anyone employing unregistered individuals to carry out duties as allied health professionals is committing an offence,' she said. KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — The Health Ministry (MOH) will fill 4,352 positions in the healthcare sector through a fast-track process to meet the urgent need for medical personnel, said Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad. He said the matter was discussed at the Cabinet meeting yesterday, during which he stressed the importance of accelerating the process. 'I have emphasised and instructed the MOH secretary-general and Health director-general to fast-track the recruitment process rather than following the conventional approach,' he told Bernama after officiating the Annual Scientific Meeting and 55th Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Society of Radiographers here today. Touching on the registration of healthcare practitioners under the Allied Health Professions Act 2016 (Act 774), Dzulkefly urged all practitioners to complete their official registration and obtain the Annual Practising Certificate (APC) before December 31, 2026. He said this was vital to establish a recognised, regulated and quality-driven allied health ecosystem. Meanwhile, MOH Allied Health Sciences Division director L Mageswary said individuals who fail to register or practise without a valid APC could face legal action. 'Anyone employing unregistered individuals to carry out duties as allied health professionals is committing an offence. 'If convicted, the offender may be fined up to RM50,000 or jailed for up to two years, or both. For continuing offences, an additional fine of up to RM1,000 per day may be imposed after conviction. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the matter was raised at yesterday's Cabinet meeting, where he said he personally stressed the need to expedite the process. "I have told the Health Ministry secretary-general and the director-general of health to expedite the recruitment through the fast-track method rather than the conventional approach," he told Bernama after officiating the 55th Annual Scientific Conference and General Meeting of the Malaysian Society of Radiographers here today. On the registration of healthcare practitioners under the Allied Health Professions Act 2016 (Act 774), Dr Dzulkefly called on all practitioners to complete their official registration and obtain their Annual Practising Certificate (APC) by 31 December 2026. He said this step is crucial in creating a recognised, regulated and quality-based allied health ecosystem. Meanwhile, MOH Allied Health Sciences Division director L.
