Five ‘foot soldiers' arrested over daylight murder of underworld figure Robert Issa

Homicide detectives have arrested five men over the brazen daylight murder of underworld player Robert Issa at a busy shopping centre car park in Melbourne's northern suburbs in 2023.
Officers arrested the men during a series of early morning raids on six properties in Kew, Mickleham, Pascoe Vale and Fawkner on Thursday.
Investigators believe the men, a 29-year-old from Kew, a 31-year-old from Mickleham, a 33-year-old from Pascoe Vale, and two 26-year-old men from Fawkner, are foot soldiers hired to carry out the hit.
'We believe there are also people further up the chain who are responsible for ordering this attack,' Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said.
Thomas said the arrests represented a turning point in the investigation, but there was still work to be done.
'A significant and protracted investigation by the Homicide Squad over the past two years has led us to today's arrests, but this investigation is far from over,' Thomas said.
'We will do everything we can to hold accountable every single person involved in this shooting. If you know you are part of that chain, now is the time for you to come and speak to us, because this may be your last opportunity.'
Craigieburn man Robert Issa died, and another man was seriously injured when balaclava-clad men sprayed their white Mercedes station wagon with bullets in front of horrified shoppers outside Craigieburn Central shopping centre about 3pm on October 7, 2023.
The men fled the scene in a black Range Rover, which was later found torched in Westmeadows.

Firebombed business owner target of $1 million extortion ploy by bikies

Deicke did not respond to requests for comment on Thursday. Last week, he told The Age he did not know why the businesses had been targeted. 'I've got no idea, but I'm not the owner. We've got four young children, and we need to be left alone,' he said. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it was 'aware of threats allegedly made against a 49-year-old man from the Bayside area'. 'No report has been made to police,' the police spokeswoman said. Deicke, who is a half-brother of five-time world champion boxer Lester Ellis, made his fortune from a string of smash repair businesses across Melbourne and Geelong before moving into property development, luxury car hire and hospitality. He also offers life and business coaching, according to a website that promotes his diverse business interests. 'David Deicke is an embodiment of dedication, innovation, and entrepreneurial success,' the website states. 'His journey, spanning over two decades, showcases a remarkable trajectory from a competitive boxer to a business innovator, and ultimately, a connoisseur of luxury.' The latest extortion attempt on Deicke is not his first encounter with outlaw motorcycle gangs. Deicke, who also uses the names David Ellis and David Becks, was stabbed twice by a member of the Finks gang in December 2010, following a dispute over the sale of a Range Rover to an associate of the gang. At the time, he claimed he was the victim of a botched robbery. However, a Brighton car wash business he owned was then the target of two drive-by shootings before it was destroyed by fire. 'Someone came in here to rob the place, and I attacked him and got stabbed. The last thing I need is this plastered all over the paper,' Deicke told this masthead in April 2011. In 2014, one of Deicke's smash repairs businesses in Collingwood was the scene of a savage attack by late Comancheros enforcer Hawre Sherwani on another gang member over an alleged debt. Sherwani was murdered in January, after serving four years in prison for the brutal assault. In November 2023, Deicke was charged by federal police over the importation of 120 kilograms of liquid cocaine found inside 600 wine bottles that arrived from South Africa in 2018.

Lured, shot: Man charged with ambush on tradie linked to Sam ‘The Punisher' Abdulrahim

A man has been charged over the 'targeted' daylight shooting of an unsuspecting tradie, who was allegedly lured to an address before a bullet was fired through his ankle. Police revealed on Thursday, 10 months on from the shooting in Fawkner in Melbourne's north, that they have charged a 19-year-old Coburg man over the attack, as well as an earlier alleged home invasion in Deer Park. Police released footage earlier this year of the shooting on October 3, 2024, that showed a white 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC43 rounding a roundabout, then parking on Denys Street in Fawkner, at about 9am. The victim, a 49-year-old tradie from Lalor and an alleged associate of gunned-down underworld figure Sam 'The Punisher' Abdulrahim, arrived about half an hour later, having been allegedly lured there under the guise of providing a quote to fix a fence. The footage showed the victim walking up a footpath before a figure dressed in black ran up behind him and fired a quick shot, which went through his left ankle, then into his right foot. It sent him to the ground roaring and writhing in pain. The man's bellows rang out on the suburban street as another car, just passing by, approached. By the time paramedics showed up, the footpath was soaked in blood. 'Investigators will allege a 49-year-old Lalor man had been lured to the address under the pretence of providing a quote for a trades job,' Victoria Police said in a statement on Thursday. 'Police believe the incident was targeted. The investigation remains ongoing.' The shooting victim was one in a long line of targets on the receiving end of a firebomb, bullet or threat allegedly because of their association with Abdulrahim, who was shot dead in January this year.
