Choke on that, baby! Shooter McGavin fancies a stay at The White Lotus
When pushed to reveal which other shows he loves, McDonald doesn't hesitate. 'I was obsessed with The White Lotus – talk about a dream job.'
It's no secret that The White Lotus is among the hottest contested roles in TV. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Carrie Coon – who played Laurie in season three – opened up about the competitive nature of the show. 'These roles are highly coveted by all of our friends,' she explained. 'Everyone auditions for The White Lotus.'
According to reports, season three hopefuls included Woody Harrelson, Lily Allen and Evan Peters. And while McDonald might be part of a long list, in Hollywood, it's all about who you know.
'I actually did a show with Mike White back in the day called Cracking Up, it was a short-lived sitcom on Fox,' McDonald reveals.
The 2004 series, created by White, was cancelled after just six episodes, but even then, McDonald could sense he was in the presence of greatness. 'He's got a real talent for human observation, I used to watch him on the set and be fascinated because we'd be taping something, and he'd rush off to the side, find a place that was quiet and then make these freehand changes to the script,' he says. 'There's a level of genius to Mike White that I'd love to be involved with.'
The idea of Shooter McGavin checking into The White Lotus might seem far-fetched, but it's precisely the kind of inspired casting the show has become known for. Failing that, McDonald seems content with his lot in life. The enduring legacy of Happy Gilmore has turned him into a cult figure.
During our interview, three people stopped to say hello or quote lines from the film – little wonder he is such a hit on Cameo, the website where people order personalised videos from celebrities.
While also giving him a level of commercial appeal that makes him an attractive ambassador for companies such as Uber. The company tapped the actor to travel to Australia and promote its subscription service Uber One and its partnership with fast food giant McDonald's.
'I've always joked that Ronald is my long-lost brother, so I was the perfect pick for this,' laughs McDonald.
The campaign features McDonald recreating scenes from Happy Gilmore, a savvy marketing move ahead of the film's sequel. 'Like I said earlier, Shooter is the gift that keeps on giving,' says McDonald, flashing a grin. Hard to argue with that.

I am obsessed with professional wrestling, and I've made somewhat of a career out of that. "In a weird way, I almost feel like I fit in the wrestling world more than I do in Hollywood." The Fantastic Four: First Steps star explained how those feelings of otherness inspire his creative choices as she makes sure to only pick worthwhile projects. He said: "There's so much I haven't done that I want to do desperately. Kevin Costner offered me a part in Horizon, but it was one line of dialogue and the character had nothing to them. "I don't need to be a piece of furniture in anybody's movie. I love Kevin Costner, and I want to work with him, and it'd be an honor, but I also want to do something good. "The same thing with Luca Guadagnino, [who] offered me [a role] to play the tennis judge during the big matches in Challengers." While the latter was also tempting, he compared the role and his ambitions to being "too hungry to eat garnish and pretend it's a meal". He argued: "I would rather hold out for the right thing. "On the day I'm just going to be all hungry, and then I'm going to look stupid and then I'm going to feel awkward. In Hollywood, I don't feel like I fit in at all."

Zack Snyder confirms The Last Photograph with casting in place
Zack Snyder is set to start work on The Last Photograph. The Batman v Superman director's next movie will star Stuart Martin and Fra Free - who he worked with on his recent Rebel Moon sci-fi franchise - with production set to get underway this month. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the long awaited passion project will film through November in Iceland, Colombia and Los Angeles. Snyder said in a statement: "The idea of taking camera in hand and simply making a movie in an intimate way is very appealing to me. 'The Last Photograph is a meditation of life and death, embodying some of the trials that I have experienced in my own life and the exploration of those ideas through image making.' Snyder will helm the project from Kurt Johnstad's screenplay, while the director also has a story-by credit. The movie will follow an ex-DEA operative returning to the mountains in South America as he seaches for his missing niece and nephew, whose diplomat parents have been murdered. A washed-up war photographer is the only person who saw the killers' faces, and so they have to join forces to uncover the truth and find the missing children. Snyder has been looking to make the movie for a long time, although it's been on the back burner for years due to his blockbuster projects. However, his relationship with Martin and Free from their work on Rebel Moon - as well as a gap in his scheduled before anoter big budget movie - meant the time was right. Since finishing his time at DC Studios - which included Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2009's Watchmen - Snyder moved over to Netflix to work on his own sci-fi franchise Rebel Moon. He released Part One: A Child of Fire in December 2023 and its follow-up Part Two: The Scargiver four months later. Both flicks were met with heavy criticism upon their release, and the filmmaker previously admitted he was baffled by the "overreactions" to his work. He told the Metro newspaper: "The reactions to my movies tend to really be these big... overreactions. "Even just (with) Rebel Moon – Part One, I'm like, 'It's not that controversial of a movie.' A lot of people have this crazy reaction to it. And I'm just like, 'I don't get it!' "I'm not mad about it, but it just is what it is."

‘Ocean of awfulness': Aubrey Plaza opens up about husband's death for first time
She said she sometimes wants to 'dive into it and just be in it', while other times she just wants to look at it. 'And then sometimes I just try to get away from it – but it's always there.' According to the medical examiner's report released in March, the couple had separated four months before Baena's death. Plaza and his family shared a brief statement following the filmmaker's passing, describing it as 'an unimaginable tragedy' and imploring people to respect their privacy. Since then, the actress has largely remained out of the spotlight. However, she is currently doing the media rounds as part of the promotion of her upcoming film, Ethan Coen's Honey Don't! – her first major film release this year. 'Overall, I'm here, and I'm functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world,' Plaza said on the podcast. 'But it's like a daily struggle, obviously.' Baena was known for his work co-writing the quirky comedy I Heart Huckabees in 2004.
