Collective responsibility for ensuring peaceful Amarnath Yatra: Mehbooba
Srinagar, June 10 (UNI) Former Chief Minister and PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said that it was the collective responsibility of every Kashmiri in ensuring a peaceful and secure Amarnath Yatra beginning from July 3.
Mehbooba said this during her visit to the tourist resort of Pahalgam in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Pahalgam was struck by a brutal terrorist attack on April 22, leaving 25 tourists and a local dead. During the Amarnath Yatra, Pahalgam serves as the traditional base camp for the yatris
'…Amarnath Yatra is about to start. That's why I called all our workers on the route of Amarnath Yatra. I told them that the people of Pahalgam have to take care of Amarnath Yatra so that the Yatra goes well,' Mehbooba told a gathering at the tourist resort.
She highlighted the historical role of Pahalgam's residents in fostering communal harmony.
'The people of Pahalgam have kept Hindu-Muslim unity alive in the country. For centuries, the people of Kashmir and Pahalgam have welcomed Amarnath Yatris with open hearts, and this legacy will continue with the same spirit and sincerity,' she said.
Mehbooba underscored that the security of Amarnath Yatris is a shared responsibility, noting, no matter how many security forces are deployed, the actual responsibility for a peaceful Amarnath Yatra lies with every inhabitant of Pahalgam.
She said once the Amarnath Yatra will be peaceful, people will regain their confidence and tourism will start again.
The PDP chief also urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the Lieutenant Governor to take swift action to reopen popular tourist destinations such as Chandanwari, Aru Valley, Betab Valley, and other parks in Pahalgam.
She questioned the delay in their reopening, stating, 'I want to ask Omar sahab, no one stops you from giving jobs to retired people or transferring officers as you wish. If you can exercise your authority freely in these matters, why can't you ensure these parks are open for the public?'
'We, in the opposition, can only raise our voice. But if you, despite being in government, only make statements, what's the difference between you and us?' she asked

Month-long family pensioners' redressal drive in July
New Delhi, June 11 (UNI) The Government's Department of Pension and Pensioners welfare (DoPPW) will launch a ]special campaign 2.0 for redressal of 2210 grievances of family pensioners and super senior pensioners next month. According to a DoPPW statement here, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions will kick-start the month-long drive. 'A total number of 2210 pension grievances have been taken up and shared with the 51 ministries/departments/organisations for redressal under the campaign,' said the statement. At a preparatory meeting under the chairmanship of Secretary (Pension) on June 11, the guidelines issued for ensuring smooth and seamless execution of the Special Campaign 2.0 were deliberated upon in detail. Secretary (Pension) underscored that the prime objective of the campaign is to provide qualitative redressal of the grievances. Sri Lankan Army commander in India to boost defence ties
New Delhi, June 11 (UNI) Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lieutenant General BKGM Lasantha Rodrigo arrived here on Wednesday on a four-day official visit aimed at enhancing bilateral military cooperation. This visit is set to enhance bilateral military cooperation and explore new avenues for collaboration, particularly in the areas of training and capability enhancement, a Defence Ministry statement said. It underscores the continued efforts of both nations to further strengthen and deepen their longstanding defence partnership. Lt Gen Rodrigo held a series of high-level meetings beginning with an in-depth interaction with Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani, Vice Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army. Both the military leaders discussed wide ranging issues including aspects of bilateral defence cooperation and regional security concerns. Later, he was briefed on Operation Sindoor and India's security perspective. He was also briefed by other senior officers of the Indian Army on matters of mutual interest. Lt Gen Rodrigo met with Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, Chief of Air Staff and Rajesh Kumar Singh, Defence Secretary. These meetings provided an opportunity for the exchange of views on broader defence and security issues, focusing on matters of mutual interests. He also planted a tree at the Manekshaw Centre, symbolising time-tested relation of Indian and Sri Lanka Army. On June 12, Lt Gen Rodrigo will visit Jaipur and meet Lt Gen Manjinder Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Western Command. The General Officer will grace the Passing Out Parade at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, as the Reviewing Officer on June 14. This visit will mark a poignant return to his alma mater, where he was commissioned in December 1990, with the 87th Course of the IMA-an experience that laid the foundation of his illustrious military career. His presence at the Academy will rekindle memories of his formative years, now brought full circle as he would review a new generation of officers. Adding a personal and emotional dimension to the ceremony, Brigadier RMSP Rathnayake of Sri Lanka Army, will also be in attendance to witness his son, Foreign Officer Cadet RMNL Rathnayake, being commissioned with the current course. This confluence of legacy and leadership underscores the enduring spirit of camaraderie and leadership connect between the two Armies. DMK ally in talks to join NDA: Nagenthran
Tirunelveli: BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran said on Wednesday that a key alliance partner of DMK is in talks to join the BJP-led NDA . "Discussions are underway, but we cannot reveal the details now," he said at a news conference in Tirunelveli. His response came when asked about Union minister L Murugan 's recent statement hinting at a possible switch by a DMK ally. Nagenthran also said he would personally review the Keeladi excavation report and submit his recommendations on its credibility to the central govt. "I will study the report in detail and send my feedback," he said, on ongoing criticism by opposition parties that the BJP undermines Tamil heritage. Reiterating BJP's support for Tamil culture, Nagenthran pointed to several initiatives by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including translating Thirukkural into 63 languages and organising Tamil Sangam events in Kashi and Gujarat. "The BJP has always upheld Tamil identity and culture," he said. He said if the AIADMK-BJP alliance comes to power in Tamil Nadu , it will be led by Edappadi K Palaniswami. "It will be an alliance partners' rule, and EPS will be the leader," he said. "Everyone born in India is a Hindu in terms of cultural identity," he said in response to a question. Nagenthran said the BJP-led central govt allocated ₹10 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu over the past 11 years without any financial backlog. "This is the highest level of central support the state received," he added.
