Did 'players fail Ferguson' or was he 'not manager material'?

BBC News20-05-2025

Following the confirmation that Barry Ferguson is leaving Rangers, we asked for your views on his brief tenure. Here's what some of you said:John: Ferguson was put in a difficult position and did well with what he had to play with. Unfortunately we all know this squad just isn't good enough. Although he's leaving the manager's role, I hope they make some space for him in a coaching capacity as he has a lot to offer and is a potential Gers manager in the making.Allan: Lots of people are saying Ferguson did well with the tools he had, which I agree with, but so did Philippe Clement. They had the same set of players and got the same inconsistent play and results. The team is good at counter-attacking but not good at trying to break down a low block. That is the conundrum for the new manager, to be able to do both.Murray: Ferguson plugged the holes in a sinking ship, but that's all. His press conferences were both refreshing and alarming when he kept saying "my team" and seemed to be a "me" instead of "we". He also refused to give fringe players a try and was more interested in looking good himself with mediocre wins than trying out players for next season. I'm glad he didn't get the job full-time.Neil: I thought Barry, Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor did a decent job given the tools he had to work with. These players in a number of cases have been responsible for a number of managers losing their jobs. The highlights were Fenerbahce away and the penalties at Ibrox and the win at Parkhead. I felt Barry and the boys answered the call from Rangers in difficult circumstances and showed what the club means to each of them. Alan: Not manager material at such a big club but room for improvement, could be a good assistant.Bobby: The right decision in the end. Ferguson's chances of getting the job permanently were already slim. He didn't get a reaction out of the players who served up the same dross under Clement. His time as manager will be forgotten about quickly.Ronnie: I feel for Barry. He wanted the job so badly and was let down so many times by a group of players who have been inconsistent all season. Barry didn't fail, the players did. He showed enough in his gameplan and team selections, plus the ability to change things during a game, to convince me at least he could have done the job permanently. However, the decision has been made and I will get behind the new manager. I personally would have Stevie Gerrard or Gio van Bronckhorst back.

Omar Berrada: Manchester United can win Premier League by 2028

Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada remains confident the club can mark their 150th anniversary in 2028 by winning both the men's and women's league titles. Berrada, who first told staff of his 'Project 150' vision in September last year, knows that represents a significant challenge with Ruben Amorim's side having just endured a worst top-flight season since relegation in 1973-74, while Chelsea continue to dominate the Women's Super League. However, he believes marking a major milestone in the club's history since it was founded as Newton Heath in 1878 with double title success is realistic. In an interview with the United We Stand fanzine to be published on Wednesday, Berrada said: 'It's establishing a series of targets within a timeframe so we can focus our efforts and energy on that goal. 'Can the team win the Premier League title by 2028? Of course. We've just finished 15th and it seems an impossible task. But why not aim for it? Why not do everything in our power?' While United finished third in the WSL, 16 points behind champions Chelsea, who also beat them in the FA Cup final, the men languished just three places above the Premier League relegation zone and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. Nevertheless, Berrada is sticking to his timetable. He said: 'I firmly believe we can do it. We have two or three summer windows to build a team to start competing to win the Premier League.' United have made one signing so far, Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and Berrada has drawn comparisons between him and Eric Cantona. 'He's a player that I think fans are going to love,' Berrada said. 'We can talk about his technical abilities and he can play in three different positions. He's a playmaking attacking midfielder; he can score goals, he can make assists. I think he's going to lift people off their seats. He's got a bit of a swagger about him that people are going to really like. Dare I say, (Eric) Cantona-esque. 'He was an important one to get done. We're going to do our best to do more signings quickly. Sometimes when you're not quick, it's because you're negotiating and you're trying to make sure you get the right value for money. So being efficient or quick isn't necessarily the best thing for the club.'

Football's teen wonderboy Lamine Yamal, 17, takes a luxury holiday with flight attendant 13 years his senior, as Barcelona forward releases statement

Barcelona teenage wonderkid Lamine Yamal has been spotted on holiday with a flight attendant 13 years his senior. Yamal, 17, is currently having some well-earned downtime after his Spain side were beaten on penalties by Portugal in the Nations League final earlier this month. And he has chosen to spend his time with Spanish flight attendant and social media influencer Fati Vazquez, who is 30 years old. Yamal and Vazquez have posted photos from the same location in Italy in recent days, with the pair enjoying a life of luxury that has included going on a boat trip, relaxing by a pool and flying in a helicopter, leading to speculation that they may have started a relationship. However, Yamal has denied that they are a couple after speaking with gossip expert Javi de Hoyos. De Hoyos claims 'he's been able to speak to Lamine Yamal, and he categorically denies that he's with her; he says they have nothing going on.' De Hoyos added: 'Lamine didn't go to this vacation spot alone, but with other Barça teammates.' Having revealed that Yamal is not in a relationship with Vazquez, De Hoyos suggested that the influencer could instead be interested in another Barcelona player. 'Probably, Fati does have something going on with someone at Barca or is a friend of another teammate,' he said. There has been plenty of online reaction to Yamal and Vazquez holidaying together in light of their significant age gap. Vazquez has now responded to the abuse she has received, while choosing not to address the rumours that she is dating Yamal. 'It's sad to see how some people carry so much darkness inside that they get to wish death on someone they don't even know,' she posted on Instagram. 'What others project speaks more about them than me. I choose to live with purpose, continue to grow and surround myself with light. To those who wish me evil, I wish them healing, because no one who is well with himself wishes to destroy another.' Vazquez started her career as a flight attendant but has since moved on from being a crew member to focus on social media. She has over one million followers across YouTube and Instagram, where she regularly posts about her fitness regime and healthy eating. Vazquez has also written a book about the bullying she experienced during her teenage years. Yamal went public with his TikTok star girlfriend Alex Padilla after winning Euro 2024, but they split shortly afterwards after a video of her sitting on another boy's lap went viral Meanwhile, Yamal appears to still be single for now. He went public with his TikTok influencer girlfriend Alex Padilla last July after she cheered him on to Euros glory in Germany. However, he unfollowed Padilla later that month after a video of her sitting on another boy's lap went viral on social media. Yamal was then spotted with another TikTok star, Anna Gegnoso, in December as they went shopping together in Barcelona amid reports they had started dating. But it is understood that they are not in a relationship currently. Yamal posted a photo of himself at the airport ahead of a planned trip to Brazil on Monday, where he is expected to meet one of his childhood heroes, Neymar, after previously mentioning his intention to do so in multiple interviews.
