Soccer-Xavi application for India coaching job was a hoax, AIFF says
(Reuters) -The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed on Saturday that a job application attributed to former Barcelona manager and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez for the India head coaching role was a hoax.
The AIFF's national team director told The Times of India on Thursday that Xavi's name was on the list of applicants. The report also quoted an AIFF technical committee member saying the his candidacy was deemed too expensive to pursue.
"The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine," the AIFF said in a statement.
It had not been previously reported that the AIFF had also received an application purporting to be from Manchester City manager Guardiola.
The AIFF Technical Committee said it had reviewed 170 applications for the Indian men's head coach role, narrowing the list to 10 before short-listing three candidates.
The AIFF sacked former India manger Igor Stimac in June last year before appointing Spaniard Manolo Marquez, who left the job this month and returned to his role as coach of Indian Super League team FC Goa.

The final test ended when Gill's outstanding pace bowler Mohammad Siraj, who bowled with undiminished vigour throughout the match, yorked Gus Atkinson to give his team victory by six runs. "What happened this morning summarised what this team is all about," Gill said. "This team believes if there is some kind of opening we can get through that opening." He noted that the dismissals of Yorkshire pair Harry Brook and then Joe Root on Sunday evening had been that opening. "Seventy runs on day four, even 50 runs they would be under pressure," Gill said. Machuca thanks his grandma for Malaysia shirt
KUALA LUMPUR: His footie-loving granny worked hard to get him to play for a national team in the other side of the world. The Argentine-born Imanol Machuca attributed his move to Harimau Malaya to his Malaysian grandmother. In an interview with Spanish media outlet, Sabado Velez recently, the 25-year-old winger said his Malaysia debut was a "unique experience", one made possible by his grandmother. Machuca played a key role as Malaysia thrashed Asean powerhouse Vietnam 4-0 in an Asian Cup qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10. In retrospect, Machuca thanked his grandmother for making his Malaysia dream a reality. "I got a phone call from my grandmother. She had been working on this (joining Malaysia) for a while. I had been talking about it for some time, but never managed to make it happen. Thank God, this year I was finally able to play. It was incredible." Speaking ahead of the Copa Libertadores round of 16, Machuca, who plays for Velez Sarsfield FC in Argentina, also talked about his Malaysian adventure. "There's a lot of passion in Malaysia. When the announcement (about Machuca playing for Malaysia) was made, the post got 15,000 likes and so many comments with the Malaysian flag. I want to send a big hug to all Malaysians," he said. Machuca said he was charmed in his first visit to Malaysia. "It's a beautiful country. Economically stable, the cities are very nice, although the weather is quite humid and hot. "People are friendly. They treated me well, and the culture is impressive. "I have been in contact with the coach (Peter Cklamovski). I hope they will call me again. I had a great experience in the Asian Cup qualifiers. We did well and I hope we can win our next two games (against Laos on Oct 9 and 14)."

TSG's de Bod scores top-20 finish at Circuito de Getxo
KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) concluded their Spanish classics campaign on a positive note at the Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa race in the Basque Country yesterday (Aug 3). TSG's Stefan de Bod was again their stand out man as he crossed the line 15th (+31s), which was the highest placed finish by a TSG rider in Spain this year. The South African had placed 24th at the Ordiziako Classic last week where he also claimed the Most Combative Rider award. TSG started the 172.2 kilometre race, which started in Bilbao and ended in Getxo, with only five men as Vadim Pronskiy was ill while Anatolii Budiak had left Spain for the Trans-Himalaya Race in China which starts on Aug 7. TSG's Mathias Breghnoj concluded Circuito de Getxo in 46th (+3:49s) though Kee Zhe Yie, Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Aiman Zariff did not finish. There were no surprises as heavyweights UAE Team Emirates-XRG notched a one-two finish through Isaac del Toro (3:59:11s) and Juan Ayuso (+20s). Cofidis' Alex Aranburu settled for third after being pipped by Ayuso. TSG had competed in three one-day races in Spain over the past two weeks - Terres de L´Ebre Classic (July 22), Ordiziako Classic (July 25) and Circuito de Getxo - which are all UCI 1.1 races.
