KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has reaffirmed that its current focus is on securing the continuation of the MotoGP Malaysia beyond 2026, and not on the potential return of Formula 1. In a statement today, SIC clarified that its Chief Executive Officer Azhan Shafrima Hanif's recent remarks referred specifically to the renewal of MotoGP Malaysia contract, following some confusion arising from media reports. 'Formula 1 remains a significant part of our history, regaining its hosting rights has proven to be both complex and costly. 'The key priority is safeguarding MotoGP, which continues to resonate strongly with Malaysian fans and remains more accessible from both a spectator and organisational standpoint,' the statement read. For the record Malaysia's current contract to host MotoGP runs until 2026. Meanwhile, in the same statement SIC said they remain committed to working closely with the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS), Dorna Sports S.L and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the continuation of the prestigious event, which is also the longest-running international sporting event in the country. Match-fixing arrests rock Singapore basketball league
SINGAPORE, Aug 20 — Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) has arrested nine individuals for their suspected involvement in match-fixing in this year's K. Star National Basketball League Division 1. CPIB said that it had arrested eight Singaporeans and one permanent resident, aged between 19 and 35, including players from participating teams in the competition. 'One of the alleged fixed matches was between Tagawa and Tong Whye, which took place on Aug 1, 2025,' it said in a statement on Tuesday. The agency added that investigations are ongoing under the Prevention of Corruption Act. CPIB reiterated Singapore's strict zero-tolerance stance on corruption, stating that match-fixing in any form is not condoned. (EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA : The government's decision on whether to extend Sepang International Circuit's (SIC) contract to host the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) will depend on detailed data showing the race's return on investment, says youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh. While the event had received encouraging support, Yeoh said, SIC must convince the finance ministry that the race provides comprehensive benefits. 'When we invest, we are not signing only in terms of tourism. It should help support the economy and job opportunities for Malaysians,' Bernama quoted her as saying after an event in Putrajaya today. Yeoh said the MotoGP generates about 4,500 temporary jobs annually, but the government also wanted to see long-term benefits, such as skills transfer to Malaysians. 'So, that's why data collection is important, and SIC must ensure that all this is recorded to convince the finance ministry that it is not a waste,' she said. It was reported yesterday that SIC was in talks with rights holder Dorna Sports to renew its MotoGP contract, which expires in 2026. SIC's CEO, Azhan Shafriman Hanif, was also reported as saying that following the decision to give up the hosting rights for the Formula 1 grand prix, Malaysia should not 'make the same mistake with MotoGP'. On another matter, Yeoh expressed confidence in the Malaysian badminton squad ahead of the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25 to 31.
