Orlando Magic's Wendell Carter Jr. hosts VA charity event
Orlando Magic Center Wendell Carter Jr. hosted a charity event last night that benefited the VA Center for Development & Civic Engagement's STEM programs.
The event at Top Golf Orlando included many people, celebrities, and Magic talent. People could also participate in golf, spade tournaments, and silent auctions.
Carter presented a $20k dollar check to help the VA center kickstart the innovative initiative designed to empower veterans with valuable skills.
Carter's A Platform² Foundation is set up to empower youth and families through programs and resources designed to elevate their quality of life and create opportunities for success.
In just his short time in the NBA, his foundation has already had major impacts on the community, including:
Flight 34 – hosting area high school students for events and flying experiences to inspire them to consider a career in the exciting world of aviation.
STEM Aviation Program – providing schools and students with the necessary equipment to enhance existing programs at Title 1 schools in Orlando and his hometown of Atlanta.
Community Events – collaboration with organizations such as Boys to Men Mentoring to provide guidance to young students needing positive role models.
Holiday Events – ensuring that families in need enjoy a better holiday season with Thanksgiving turkey giveaways and Christmas gift and coat giveaways.

Vic Fangio: Good news is Jalen Carter played well and can still improve a lot
Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter has made a big impact in his first two NFL seasons, but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio thinks there's plenty of upside left for the 2023 first-round pick. Carter was a second-team All-Pro after recording 42 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles during the regular season and he had two more sacks and a forced fumble in the team's playoff win over the Rams. During a press conference this week, Fangio was asked his thoughts about what the future holds for Carter. 'The good news about Jalen is twofold,' Fangio said, via a transcript from the team. 'One, he played very well for us last year, and two, he can still improve a lot.' Carter isn't arguing with that assessment. Carter mentioned Chris Jones and Dexter Lawrence while discussing the best defensive tackles in the league and said his goal is to reach that level as well. 'This is what I wanted to do,' Carter said, via Dave Zangaro of 'I wanted to be the best at what I do, try to be the best. I'm not there yet. I still got a lot of people in front of me that's obviously been in the league a couple [more] years, got years of experience on me. But I'm just going to keep grinding every day. Not just me by myself working on specific things to get better, just being around the team having the guys support me also makes me also be one of the best in the league.' Repeating as Super Bowl champions is difficult, but it'll be a little easier if Carter can continue ascending as rapidly as he has the last two years.

However, the Magic were contenders for the NBA championship during the late 2000s. The organization even reached the NBA Finals in 2009 and battled against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. That was followed by a seven-game series against the Boston Celtics in the second round. Upon reaching the Eastern Conference finals, the Magic faced the Cleveland Cavaliers, led by LeBron James. Orlando outplayed Cleveland in six games to advance to the Finals. Surprisingly, the Magic's Game 4 performance against the Lakers made it to the list. The Magic were up 87-84 with 11.1 seconds left. Their franchise star at that time, Dwight Howard, was on the line to shoot two free throws. However, Howard isn't the most reliable player when it comes to shooting from the line, as the three-time Defensive Player of the Year shot 59.4% during the 2008-09 season. Advertisement Howard missed both shots, and the Lakers got the basketball. With 4.6 seconds left, Los Angeles' point guard Derek Fisher shot a 3-pointer and sent the game to overtime. The Magic dealt with a 99-91 defeat and fell to 3-1. Orlando couldn't overcome the deficit and lost the series in five games. "But what if Howard had made one (or both) of those free throws and helped the Magic hold on? Then the series would have been tied at two games apiece with Game 5 in Orlando. Had the series been even at that point, there's no telling what could have happened," Velasquez wrote. The Magic couldn't capture what they had that year and were eliminated in the conference finals the following year. The next two seasons were underwhelming as they were eliminated in the first round.
