Kurt-Lee Arendse embraces healthy competition in the Springbok squad
Prolific winger Kurt-Lee Arendse will look to add more tries to his name against Italy this weekend when the Springboks take on Georgia in the final mid-year Test in Nelspruit. Image: BackpagePix Having strong competition in the Springbok squad gives players that wake-up call at times when they think they can rest on their laurels when running out for the national side. That is why Bok winger Kurt-Lee Arendse is happy to see the depth in the squad, especially at winger, and the healthy competition emanating from within to keep the world champions strong. Arendse, who scored a try in the first Test against Italy, is back in the side after sitting out the second clash, where newcomer Edwill van der Merwe took his chance with both hands. Van der Merwe, who will partner Arendse against Georgia this weekend in Nelspruit (5.10pm kick-off), bagged a brace in the second Test. Cheslin Kolbe and Makazole Mapimpi are the other wingers currently in the Springbok fold, while a few youngsters are also knocking on the door. Arendse has impressed in his 25 caps so far. The speedster has amassed 95 points and is set to continue his try-scoring feat against the Georgians this weekend. He needs two more tries to break into the Top 10 all-time try-scoring lists. According to Arendse, having that competition within the team environment is what drives him to keep performing when called upon. 'There is maybe a stage in your career where you get comfortable, and there are other guys coming through and they put their hand up. You receive a wake-up call that others also aspire to play for the Springboks,' Arendse said on Wednesday. 'It is good and healthy competition. That is what we need. "There are even guys at the Junior Boks (Jaco Williams, Cheswill Jooste, Siya Ndlozi) putting their hand. It is good for South African rugby. When you get that opportunity, you want to put your best foot forward. 'However, you won't have every day where you can do that. But that competition brings the best out of you.' Arendse and Van der Merwe will combine with fullback Aphelele Fassi in the back-three, while Damian de Allende and Canan Moodie man the midfield. An exciting half-back pairing of Grant Williams and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu will steer the attack. That is a recipe for another exciting Springbok clash, but they will look to the forwards to lay them the platform as they did during the second Test against Italy in Gqeberha. 'It is always special to represent the country; it doesn't matter who plays. I would not say there is pressure on us to perform, but we want to focus on setting our standard. We will not be underestimating Georgia.'

Rassie praises process that saw Jasper Wiese suspended
Earlier this week it was confirmed that Springbok No 8 Jasper Wiese has been suspended for four matches as a result of the the red card he received for a 'headbutt' against Italy. Appearing at a full Disciplinary Committee hearing, Wiese accepted that foul played had occurred, but did not accept that the offence warranted a red card. Nevertheless, the ban he received did not come as much of a surprise, and Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus – who has previously raised issues with World Rugby's former disciplinary process – admitted they could have no complaints. 'I thought the whole hearing this morning was top class,' Erasmus commented. 'Jasper got his chance to be honest about what he thinks. 'The way the chair lady ran the whole thing was clear – just the way they listened to what Jasper said. I think getting four matches banned is fair. 'There can be excuses and other opinions, but we were really comfortable. There are good protocols in place with everything, from referee communication to laws to input on high-performance structures to the disciplinary committee. 'It's four games, and we had a really fair trial, and easy to understand. So we are not happy for him missing games, but satisfied with how it was handled,' he emphasised. The eighthman will be back in contention for selection for the last three Rugby Championship matches in September and October. The ban will rule him out of the closing Incoming Series match against Georgia in Nelspruit on Saturday, as well as the first three Rugby Championship Tests against Australia in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively (16 and 23 August), and the first game against New Zealand in Auckland (6 September). Kaizer Chiefs told to fork out R15 million for Bafana star
Cyprian club Aris Limassol are reportedly placed a price tag of R15 million for Mihlali Mayambela as Kaizer Chiefs are looking to bring the Bafana Bafana winger to Naturena. The 28-year-old has expressed his desire to join Amakhosi in a recent interview. Mayambela's contract with Limassol runs until 2026 but it looks Chiefs are pushing for a move. Soccer Laduma reported that Aris Limassol demanded approximately R15 million from Kaizer Chiefs, and not R5 million that was previously stated. 'I can tell you now that no team can refuse to pay R5 million for a player of Mihlali's calibre. Have you seen the players the team has signed so far this season? And the amount they have paid? It's around that R5 million for some of them and how could they fail to pay the same amount for an international Bafana Bafana player? So, Aris Limassol demanded around R15 million with one year left on the player's contract. This is why the club felt that was too much hence it's believed they put it on hold for now,' the source told Soccer Laduma . The publication also reported that Kaizer Chiefs could look at signing Mayambela in January instead of paying R15 million now.
