Moorhead mother arrested in toddler's homicide, police say
A Minnesota mother has been arrested and will be charged with murder after her toddler's death was ruled a homicide, police said.
The 32-year-old woman was arrested in Fargo, North Dakota, the Moorhead Police Department said Friday. On May 15, her 20-month-old child was brought to a hospital unresponsive and later died.
A coroner flagged the child's death as suspicious, and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office ruled it a homicide. Moorhead police said the mother will be charged with second-degree murder in Clay County, though a criminal complaint has not yet been filed.
The woman will be extradited to Moorhead, police said.
Authorities searched the family's home as part of the investigation, which involved the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Man caught with slain cop's phone arrested for barbershop murder
Constable Khulani Chabangu, 29, was shot dead during a barbershop robbery in Mpumalanga on 30 May. A 25-year-old suspect found with a cellphone allegedly taken from the murdered officer has been arrested. A second suspect remains at large. A man found in possession of a murdered policeman's phone has been arrested by the Hawks in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, a week after the officer was shot dead during a barbershop robbery in Calcutta, near Bushbuckridge. Constable Khulani Chabangu, 29, was visiting a barbershop at around 23:00 when two armed men entered the premises and ordered everyone to lie down. Chabangu, who was off duty, was reportedly ordered to undress before suspects made off with his clothes and car keys. It is alleged they shot and killed him when he followed them outside the barbershop. The suspects then fled the scene in the officer's vehicle. Chabangu had been stationed at Volkrust police station. Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi said the suspect was arrested in Calcutta on Friday afternoon. Nkosi said he was found in possession of two cellphones. 'It is alleged that one of the cellphones was [stolen] during the murder of the police official,' Nkosi said. 'Further investigation was conducted that led the team to the suspect's friend's house. On seeing the police, the suspect's friend managed to evade arrest and vanished within the residential area. A search was conducted in the house whereby a handgun with [filed off] serial numbers and four live ammunition rounds were found.' Mpumalanga Hawks head Major General Nico Gerber said his members 'will not rest until all those behind the murder of our fallen hero are brought to book'. The suspect is expected to appear in the Calcutta Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of murder, business robbery, theft, car theft as well as illegal gun and ammunition possession.

Ukrainian woman, 6-year-old daughter found murdered in Belgium
A 46-year-old Ukrainian woman and her 6-year-old daughter were found murdered on June 6 in the city of Leuven, Belgium, authorities reported. The woman and her daughter were found after first responders were called to the scene of fire in the community of Haasrode. Both victims were found in the fire, and had previously suffered stab wounds, Belgian media outlet VRT reported. Authorities believe that the fire was deliberative and suspect foul play. The Ukrainian family, which was not named, had been living in Belgium for three years. The murdered woman's 16-year-old son was at school of the time of the murder. VRT reported that the father of the murdered girl is Ukrainian soldier currently serving on the front line. No additional details were released as the investigation into the double homicide is ongoing. A number of Ukrainian citizens have been killed or injured in attacks in multiple European cities, including in hate-motivated attacks. In February 2024, a 15-year-old Ukrainian boy received severe head injuries and was taken to the hospital after his attacker allegedly made xenophobic remarks before the attack. Riverside County death sentence inmate killed, 30 men attack murder suspect
A Riverside County inmate sentenced to death was allegedly murdered in a state prison by another inmate, which led to a large mob attack on Friday morning, officials say. It happened around 10:30 a.m. at Kern Valley State Prison, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. At that time, homicide investigators say inmate Mario Renteria, 36, from Riverside County, allegedly began attacking the death sentence inmate, identified as 46-year-old Julian Mendez. Details on this initial altercation are limited; officials did not specify Renteria's actions other than that he was 'striking' Mendez, nor did they say whether Mendez fought back. CDCR said staff ordered the men to 'get down,' but that the inmates did not comply. 'Chemical agents initially stopped the attack, but more than 30 additional incarcerated people rushed Renteria and began striking him,' stated CDCR's release. 'Orders to stop were ignored and staff used multiple blast grenades to quell the violence.' As the mob was cleared, officials found Mendez with what was only described as 'multiple wounds,' and attempted life-saving measures. An improvised weapon was also found at the scene. Mendez was then taken to the prison's triage and treatment area, where a doctor pronounced him dead at 11:05 a.m. Officials said Mendez was received from Riverside County on Dec. 2, 2004, after he received a death sentence in 2002 for the first-degree murder of two teenagers. According to the 'Death Sentences Today' site curated by a Drake University Law School professor, Mendez committed the crime on Feb. 4, 2000, when he was 22 years old. The site says that, according to the defense in his trial, Mendez was a gang member when he beat a 15-year-old boy and shot him twice, including once in the head, before ordering another gang member to shoot a 14-year-old girl because she was a witness. 'The other gang member refused to shoot [the girl], so Mendez ultimately shot her,' stated the site's summary. 'In mitigation, the defense argued Mendez had spent most of his life in a gang, and his father spent half of his life in prison because of drug usage.' Following Mendez's death, CDCR said Renteria remains in restricted housing pending investigation into this case, and that 'officials have limited population movement to facilitate the investigation being conducted.' The release noted that Renteria was received from Riverside County on April 27, 2022, after he was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder (a third strike offense) and arson.
