Cambodia nominates US President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize
US President Donald Trump had used his bargaining tool of trade deals and tariffs to get Cambodia and Thailand to agree to a truce in July.
PHNOM PENH – Cambodia formally nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize after the US leader threatened to halt trade deals unless the South-east Asian nation agreed to a ceasefire with Thailand in a recent armed conflict.
In a letter dated Aug 7 to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said Mr Trump's intervention in the conflict helped avert 'a potentially devastating conflict' and restored peace along the two countries' shared border.
He credited Mr Trump's 'visionary and innovative diplomacy' for the breakthrough.
Mr Trump had used his favoured bargaining tool of trade deals and tariffs to get
Cambodia and Thailand to agree to the truce in July.
The ceasefire came after five days of clashes that included airstrikes and artillery shelling, which left dozens dead and displaced over 300,000 people along the roughly 800km border.
The US president has repeatedly said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in mediating conflicts, including between Pakistan and India and Iran and Israel.
Pakistan also nominated Mr Trump for the prize, although India has consistently said Mr Trump played no role in securing the truce.
Recipients of the peace prize typically don't lobby for the award. BLOOMBERG

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump signalled on Aug 11 that he'd be open to allowing Nvidia Corp to sell a scaled-back version of its most advanced AI chip to China. Mr Trump said he would consider a deal that would allow Nvidia to ship its Blackwell chips to China if the company could design it to be less advanced. 'It's possible I'd make a deal' on a 'somewhat enhanced – in a negative way – Blackwell' processor, he said in a briefing with reporters. 'In other words, take 30 per cent to 50 per cent off of it.' Mr Trump made his remarks on Nvidia's Blackwell chip while confirming that he'd hammered out a separate, unusual deal with Nvidia that will allow the company to sell its less-advanced H20 AI chip to China if it pays 15 per cent of revenue tied to those shipments to the US government. The revenue-sharing agreement for the H20 chip – and the prospect of yet another one for Nvidia's Blackwell product – reflects Mr Trump's consistent effort to engineer a financial payout for America in return for concessions on trade. Such unprecedented arrangements, however, stand to set a precedent for all American companies doing business in the Asian nation and threaten the US government's national security rationale for export controls, experts said. Those chips are currently too powerful to be sold into China, according to US restrictions. Nvidia and smaller rival AMD have seen their revenues in China slashed by increasingly tight US government restrictions on AI chip exports. While the Trump administration has begun granting permits for some chips to China, those products are older and only equivalent to domestic Chinese offerings, casting doubt on their attractiveness in that market. A newer, better offering might help promote Nvidia's standing with Chinese customers if it can get sign-off from the administration. When the US tightened restrictions in April, Nvidia said it would work on another chip for the China market and would seek permission to export that one. Trump says Ukraine, Russia will have to swap some land for peace
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Monday (Aug 11) that both Ukraine and Russia would need to cede land to each other to end the war, adding that his upcoming talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin would gauge whether a deal was possible. Speaking at a White House press conference, Trump said his meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday would be a 'feel-out' session to assess the Russian leader's willingness to make peace. 'I'm going in to speak to Vladimir Putin, and I'm going to be telling him, you've got to end this war,' Trump told reporters. 'You've got to end it.' POSSIBLE THREE-WAY MEETING Trump said a future meeting could involve Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and could become a three-way session including himself and Putin. He added that he planned to speak with European leaders shortly after his talks with Putin, with the goal of securing a speedy ceasefire. The US president has floated the idea of land swaps before, but neither Kyiv nor Moscow has expressed willingness to cede territory. European governments have warned that major concessions to Russia could create long-term security risks for the West. WAR ENTERS THIRD YEAR Ukraine has been fighting to repel Russian forces since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, the largest conflict in Europe since World War II.
