EXCLUSIVE Brit, 50, dies just hours before flying home to meet his newborn grandson after being electrocuted while doing DIY for a woman who gave him a place to stay while he was travelling Mexico

Daily Mail24-06-2025
A 'kind-hearted' British grandfather died after he was electrocuted doing DIY for a woman who gave him a place to stay on a cycling trip to Mexico.
Al Brown, 50, was killed in the accident on June 2 - just hours before he was due to fly home.
Heartbreakingly, the Brit was jetting home to Norwich to meet his grandson - who had been born while he was away travelling.
The grandfather-of-five accidentally touched a live overhead cable as he was sweeping the roof at the property in the small town of Tepoztlan, a popular tourist destination near Mexico City.
Paramedics and the woman Mr Brown was staying with desperately tried to revive him, but he sadly died at the scene.
Mr Brown's loved ones and friends have now started a GoFundMe page to raise money to bring his body back to the UK.
Family friend Tony Bidwell told MailOnline: 'Al was a kind-hearted man who would do anything for anyone and was always smiling. He had a fantastic sense of humour.
'He had a passion for hiking and cycling long distances.
'He loved his children Chloe and Aaron, and his stepdaughters Vicky and Natalie - as well as his five grandsons.
'Sadly, Al passed away before meeting his youngest grandson, who was born while Al was away travelling.
'The main reason for Al wanting to come home was to meet his baby grandson for the first time as well as seeing all of his family, who he was missing.'
Before his accident, Mr Brown, who was also a keen fisherman, completed the 2,650-mile-long Pacific Crest Trail which stretches from Canada to Mexico on his bike.
He then had to have a hernia operation, which he funded himself, in Mexico.
While recovering, Mr Brown went to stay on a workaway placement and carried out light household maintenance jobs at the house such as painting.
Mr Bidwell said: 'Any money raised from the GoFundMe will go towards the costs to bring Al home to rest and to give his family and friends some peace.
'As you can imagine this is very expensive and complicated.
'His wife and two of his daughters are having to travel to Mexico for Al to be released and cremated in Mexico.'
Mr Brown was a key member of the fishing community at Bawburgh Lakes, just outside Norwich.
'Any money which may be left over, the family would really like Bawburgh Lakes, where Al spent many years as a bailiff, to hold an open day for children to get a feel for fishing,' Mr Bidwell continued.
'This is something Al was very passionate about. To him it was more than just a hobby - it was a way of life.
'Whether casting a line at dawn or quietly observing the rhythms of the natural world, Al found peace and purpose in the great outdoors In every way.
'Al was well loved by his fishing friends. He wasn't just someone who fished at Bawburgh Lakes; he helped shape it.
'Al poured so much of himself into the lakes, working tirelessly to help create the beautiful complex we all enjoy today.
'He had a deep love for the surroundings and the wildlife, always taking time to appreciate the natural beauty that made Bawburgh so special.
'He was a massive part of creating what Bawburgh Lakes has become, and he was truly loved by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
'Of all seven lakes on the complex, his favourite was Bawburgh Lake, especially the island—his special spot.
'It's only fitting that this island will now be known as Al's Island, a lasting tribute to a man who gave so much and meant even more.
'Rest easy, Al. You'll always be with us, in every ripple of the water and every laugh shared.'
The fishing community in Norwich also organised a memorial event this weekend to raise further funds to bring Mr Brown home.

Driver, 17, sang Shaggy's ‘It wasn't me' after mowing down care home worker who lost unborn baby in horror hit-&-run

A HIT-and-run driver, 17, sang Shaggy's "It wasn't me" after running over a pregnant care home worker. Renju Joseph, 31, tragically lost her unborn child after she was mowed down on a pedestrian crossing in Lancashire on September 29 last year. 2 2 Ashir Shahid, now 20, was barreling through Bamber Bridge village, near Preston, in his Toyota Prius at speeds of up to 71mph in the 30mph zone. He struck the five-months pregnant care home worker and she was "thrown into the air", Preston Crown Court heard. Renju has been walking with colleagues on her way to work when the tragedy unfolded at around 7.50pm. Paramedics rushed her to hospital with head and spinal injuries. Prosecutor Emma Keogh told the court: "It also became apparent that the life of her unborn child was in severe jeopardy. "An emergency C-section had to be carried out in an attempt to save the unborn child's life. "The placenta had ruptured and Mrs Joseph had bled quite heavily. "Her child was born that evening but sadly he only survived for a few hours before passing away. "This was her very first pregnancy with her husband who she married about five years earlier. This was a planned pregnancy and very much wanted." Renju spent several weeks in intensive care and had to relearn how to walk after a three month hospital stay. The court heard another motorist had witnessed the Prius driver accelerating around 15 metres before the crossing. They then swerved before hitting the 31-year-old and narrowly missing fellow pedestrians. The witness claimed Renju was "thrown into the air for quite some distance". Ms Keogh told the court: "It was very clear from footage in both the lead-up and the aftermath that the Toyota was driven at speed. "It was clear that throughout the journey the driving by Ashir Shahid left a lot to be desired." Video evidence from a front seat passenger in Shahid's car revealed the pair had been joking around before the crash while driving at high speed. The passenger was also seen dangling his feet out of the window while the driver periodically let go of the steering wheel. Investigations then revealed the defendant had searched "charge for hit and run human" just 11 seconds after the horror. He and another man were also seen at Frankie's Chicken Shop, laughing about the crash. One of them was overheard saying: "I'm basically with a murderer." After spotting CCTV he told a staff member behind the counter: "If anyone asks for this video, don't give it them. This guy is a criminal." While the men were still in the chicken shop, a flat bed truck picked up the Prius after it was abandoned in a nearby village. Police later discovered it had been transported to Greater Manchester. One of the men checked his phone in the hours after the incident and said: "That's the woman. She's in hospital." Meanwhile a clip from Shahid's snapchat showed him singing along to the Shaggy song It Wasn't Me and laughing. Officers detained Shahid at a property in Kirkham after he hid at a friends house until October 2. Shahid, of Windsor Road, Walton le Dale, Preston, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Renju's baby Olive by dangerous driving. He also admitted causing serious injury to Renju by dangerous driving. Shahid will be sentenced on Friday alongside a 17-year-old male who pleaded guilty to assisting an offender.

Girl, four, who died in pool at Waterworld is named as inquest into her death opens

A four-year-old girl who died in hospital following an incident at a swimming pool in Waterworld has been named for the first time. Vethavalli Vasu-Dharma was found in a critical condition after an unspecified incident at the attraction in Festival Park, Staffordshire on August 4. Paramedics arrived three minutes after receiving several 999 calls from desperate onlookers to find staff and visitors performing CPR. They took over resuscitation efforts and rushed the schoolgirl to hospital where she later died. An inquest has now been opened into her death. An East Midlands Ambulance spokesperson said: 'Crews arrived to find Waterworld staff and bystanders performing CPR on a girl who was in a critical condition. 'The ambulance team quickly took over resuscitation efforts to commence advanced life support before conveying the girl by land ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital whilst life-saving treatment continued en-route. 'Tragically, despite the best efforts of everyone, nothing could be done to save the little girl, and she was confirmed deceased in hospital a short time later. Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this truly awful time.' Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Maskew from Staffordshire Police said: 'Our thoughts are with the family at this terribly sad time. 'We are now making enquiries and looking to establish the circumstances of the incident. 'We would ask that members of the public avoid speculating in these early stages of the investigation and allow the family to grieve.' A Waterworld spokesperson said: 'Waterworld is deeply saddened to confirm that a fatal incident occurred at 4:15pm on Monday, August 4th, in the Lagoon area of the Aqua Park. 'A four-year-old girl was found unconscious and treated on Poolside by our Lifeguard & Management teams on site. 'They immediately provided CPR and called the emergency services, who arrived around 4:20pm. 'All other visitors were asked to quietly leave the pool out of respect for the rescue operation underway, and we would like to thank them for their support and collaboration. 'It is with great sadness that we learned of this young girl's passing later this evening. All our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during these extremely difficult times. 'The authorities were immediately alerted and Waterworld is working closely and openly with them to precisely understand the circumstances of this tragic accident. 'Waterworld is in shock and has decided to remain closed tomorrow out of respect for the young girl's family.'
